Creating A New Genre One Song At A Time | Posted July-02-2012
Wolves at the Gate's full-length finally drops and it's really something special.  It may not have a genre breaking sound but it does have something that no other metal album has ever done, have worshipful lyrics.  They are beautifully screamed and sung.  Captors basically creates a new genre of music that is very much needed among the strains of familiar sounds.  By all means pick this up when you get the chance and be inspired by what these guys have to say.

Another Successful Outing | Posted June-19-2012
Children 18:3's third outing On the Run continues to showcase a band that knows its sound and contiunally improves on it.  The first notes of the opening track "Moment To Moment" will sound familiar to anyone who has listened to the previous albums by the band and yes, that fast hard punk sound maintains throughout this album as well, but they are so good at what they do that you'll have a good time listening.  The lyrics are still as great as always and the vocals from siblings Seth and Lee Marie sound amazing as always.

On the Run is not out to break new ground, it's more of what makes Children 18:3 so good.  The band is not out to re-invent themselves with every album but they do improve their sound along the way.  The future is looking bright for the band as they are 3-for-3 so far.

With this album, summer has officially arrived. | Posted June-05-2012
Bryce Avary's newest Rocket Summer album, Life Will Write the Words is a great summer album.  It contains all the fun pop rock songs that he is known for and also contains heartwarming emotional songs that only he can come up with.  This is also the first independent album so you notice that Bryce has free reign to do whatever he wants.  While he doesn't introduce something new, what we do hear sounds much more clean and crisp.

While not changing his sound drastically, Bryce Avary can make us excited for more of the same, well crafted songs with great lyrics backing it up.  Life Will Write the Words is a great summer album and another winner in The Rocket Summer discography.

Maybe sticking to one rock genre wasn't such a good idea. | Posted June-04-2012
Remember Write This Down's self titled debut album that had a mix of rock styles?  Well, for their sophomore effort, Lost Weekend, they've gone in a more hard rock/punk direction.  While I do like the fact that this album isn't trying to sound similar to the last one, the style does get a bit tiresome as the album moves along.  The first half kind of burns you out with one Sum 41/Rise Against sounding song after another, but the second half does mix things up with a couple of slow ballad tracks that are a welcome addition to what would otherwise be a monotonous album.

Lost Weekend changes things by sticking to one rock genre but overdoes things by having almost the exact same song playing over and over again.  I still liked what I heard but I feel like the genre skipping of the first album produced much more memoriability than this album.

A Rocket Summer album that speaks to everyone. | Posted June-02-2012
The 4th album from Bryce Avary's solo project The Rocket Summer, Of Men and Angels, manages to show off the talent that Bryce possess lyrically and musically.  Every song sounds great and you can tell that he is learning more and more every album.  Speaking of lyrics, this album manages to be his most spiritual one yet as there are many songs about broken lives and what can be done to fix them.  It's great to see songs like those being heard by a mainstream audience (Bryce is signed to mainstream label Island Records who have been home to many mainstream bands like Fall Out Boy, Bon Jovi, and Theory of a Deadman,) and I hope they can identify with those songs.

Of Men and Angels contains everything that makes a Rocket Summer album good but also contains some of Bryce Avery's most spiritual and honest lyrics to date.

I felt something, honesty. | Posted June-02-2012
Bryce Avary's 3rd album as his solo project The Rocket Summer finds a man who has figured out what he wants to do creatively and uses every talent he possess to get that creativity out for the world to hear.  Do You Feel sounds great.  Every instrument used does not sound out of place and Bryce's great vocals sound crisp and clear.  Going deeper, the lyrics showcase some genuine honesty in all the songs featured on this album.  Do You Feel is a look at the ever rising creative force that is Bryce Avary and showcases his honesty in life situations.

Thoughtful lyrics and fun indie rock dance music combine to form a unique album. | Posted June-01-2012
You can tell froom the first couple of seconds of this album, Popularity, that Jonezetta is on a mission to combine fun indie pop/rock dance songs with thoughtful and insightful lyrics.  They have succeeded.  The album manages to have very thoughtful and inspired lyrics and get our attention by having them sung with a fun indie dance rock beat.  Even though the band has broken up, people who are looking for something different from the norm could have the potential to enjoy this album.

Hard rock that does what it does well. | Posted June-01-2012
Hard rock band Dizmas's debut album On A Search in America is a fine example of making a niche genre accessable to everyone.  It's hard rock and there is a bit of screaming, but it feels accessable to anyone who likes rock music in general.  It's got fun songs, slow songs, and thoughtful lyrics.  The album does what it does well and mkaes you excited for the band's next album.

A pretty good blend of 90's era pop and indie rock. | Posted May-29-2012
States is the new group made up of members of the defunct band Copeland and Lydia.  Their debut album, Room to Run, showcases a band that knows what it wants to be and what songs they want to create.  With a mix of 90's era pop and indie rock Room to Run manages to sound unique enough to warrent a purchase either in store or online.

(P.S. This was a review of the original album that was released last year.  Tooth & Nail is re-releasing it this year with bonus tracks.)

3.5/5 | Posted May-29-2012
Stellar Kart's debut album All Gas, No Brake is pretty good.  The band's sound is not all that original or unique but that doesn't stop them from creating some great defining songs like "Life Is Better" and "Finish Last."  All Gas, No Brake sounds like a Relient K clone circa 2004 but it does feature some memoriable songs that make this album good but not great.
