"Altar" by Hulvey is about coming to Jesus, our shame being washed away, and living to honor His name. Jesus died on a cross, shedding His own blood for us, and rose from the dead three days later so that we could be forgiven for our sins. When we believe in Jesus and what He did for us, He forgives our sins against Him and we get to have a personal relationship with Him in this life and in eternity.
But when we come to Jesus, He also washes away the guilt and shame we feel because of our sin and leads us into a brand new life where we get to live according to His ways and bring His name praise through our lives. This is the most joyful, fulfilling kind of life any of us could dream of. You and I were made to know Jesus, know His love for us, and live for Him.
Maybe you feel like you can't run to Jesus because of the things you've done in life, but the good news is you can. And as He changes your life, more and more you'll come to know the devotion He has towards you and the life of devotion to Him He designed you to live.
Romans 3:23-25 (NLT): "For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood..."
2 Corinthians 5:15 (NLT): "He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them."
Lyrics
Glory to the Father
You deserve the praise
Lead me to Your altar
Wash away my shame
All I can say is holy (yeah), can't get this off my lips (my lips)
You love me with devotion, You don't kick me when I trip, yeah (oh yeah)
I need a sip from the river (ayy), just wanna get what You givin' (ayy)
Give me unlimited vision to see through the counterfeit, I want the realest
Where He come from, you can't get that wit' a PJ (wit' a PJ)
It's so full inside this house, I feel like DJ (I feel like DJ)
I can't fight it, let Your light come shine on me, yeah (oh yeah, oh yeah)
Ain't no hidin', I'm confidin' in Your peace, yeah
Ayy, ayy, carryin' buckets of shame
Father, I'm sayin' Your name, but so far from it (hmmm, hmmm, hmmm)
Come see the blood in my veins (hmmm, hmmm, hmmm)
For me He bleedin' the same, take this covenant
This is the greatest exchange (lead me to Your altar)
At His altar, there's a flame that burns your rubbish
Gave me a cup full of rain (wash aw), He poured it over every stain until He comin', ayy
