Rising contemporary Christian artist Katy Nichole is an artist to watch. Her debut single “In Jesus Name (God of Possible),” derived from a simple chorus she released on TikTok, has topped both Billboard radio and iTunes music charts.
The 21-year-old artist is spreading the love of Jesus through her music. The proof can be found on her debut release, Katy Nichole EP. And her latest single, "God Is In This Story," is a hit currently climbing the Billboard radio charts. For the song, she teamed with the popular contemporary Christian band Big Daddy Weave. I spoke with Katy about the song.
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
This song was written early on in my songwriting sessions when I came to Nashville. It was originally supposed to be my first single. But that changed after I wrote, “In Jesus’ Name.”
I remember telling my story to someone and they said they loved how God was in the details. How His hand was on everything—even when it was hard to see Him. The person I was talking to said I should write about that.
The original song title was “God Is In My Story,” but I changed it to “God Is In This Story.” He’s not just in my story but in all our stories.
Collectively, the one thing that we have in common is that we have a story to tell. Looking back on my life, I always thought, ‘Oh, my story is too broken, and no one is going to want to hear about that.’ But what I didn’t know is that people were seeing Jesus through my story, because God was turning the broken things into beautiful things.
If you think that your story is too broken, I promise you that it’s not because God isn’t in it. He’s been in every moment of my story and He’s in every moment of your story.
What Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Ephesians 4:29(NIV): "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
James 3:9-10(NIV): "With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be."
Acts 2:28(VOICE): "Instead, You direct me on a path that leads to a beautiful life. As I walk with You, the pleasures are never-ending, and I know true joy and contentment."
Philippians 1:21(NIV): "For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
1 Peter 5:7(NKJV): “Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
Romans 8:28(VOICE): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."
John 15:4-5(VOICE): "Abide in Me, and I will abide in you. A branch cannot bear fruit if it is disconnected from the vine, and neither will you if you are not connected to Me. I am the vine, and you are the branches. If you abide in Me and I in you, you will bear great fruit. Without Me, you will accomplish nothing."
Ephesians 3:20-21(NKJV): "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
Revelation 12:11(NKJV): “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
What is the takeaway message?
I’ve had many dark moments and dark seasons in my life. But God was looking out for my good. When I came around to see what God was doing, I realized He was working things out for my good. The song’s bridge is my favorite part; addiction, depression, disease, and broken homes are real issues people can relate to. These are dark things.
If that is you, know that God will hold your sorrow and won’t leave you alone. He can conquer your hurt and suffering. He’s in your story, fighting your battles and making things new. "God Is In This Story” is a song of hope and encouragement. God is present with you in every season of your life—the great ones and the difficult ones. He’s not giving up on you. He’s in the details of your life.
Lyrics
There's torn up pages in this book
Words that tell me I'm no good
Chapters that defined me for so long
But the hands of grace and endless love
Dusted off and picked me up
Told my heart that hope is never gone God is in this story
God is in the details
Even in the broken parts
He holds my heart, He never fails
When I'm at my weakest
I will trust in Jesus
Always in the highs and lows
The One who goes before me
God is in this story So if the storm you're walking through
Feels like it's too much and you
Wonder if He even cares at all
Well, hold on tight to what you know
He promised He won't let you go
Your song of healing's written in His scars God is in this story
God is in the details
Even in the broken parts
He holds my heart, He never fails
When I'm at my weakest
I will trust in Jesus
Always in the highs and lows
The One who goes before me
God is in this story If it reads like addiction
If it reads like a disease
He's the One who frees the prisoner
He's the healer of all things
If it reads like depression
If it reads broken home
He's the One who holds your sorrow
He won't leave you here alone God is in this story
God is in the details
Even in the broken parts
He holds my heart, He never fails
When I'm at my weakest
I will trust in Jesus
Always in the highs and lows
The One who goes before me Always in the highs and lows
The One who goes before me
God is in this story (you're in this story)
God is in my story (right here in my story)
Closing Thoughts
We have freedom thanks to the cross of Jesus. Tell others about how Jesus has changed your life. When you abide in His grace, you won’t be the same. His grace takes away anxiety, addiction, guilt, and shame. Know that being His is enough.
This is an incredible song for the church. Its theme should be the heartbeat of every faithful Christian. It’s a beautiful picture of our hope in Christ. By giving our Lord all that is within us, by blessing God, we are overwhelmed by God's love and mercy in return.
Our stories all connect perfectly with this song, as it is based on 1 Corinthians 9:22: "To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." The irrefutable argument we have as believers are to share our story of grace.
This song articulates what it means to live a God-centered life in a turbulent world. As a dad of three young girls, my wife and I have tried to raise our daughters to have confidence that they have been made in God's likeness. We've also urged them to not compromise their values from peer pressure or make fun of other people.
The takeaway is that this is not something we can do on our own, and we're not going to always succeed in these areas and be encouraging all the time.
This song is a daily prayer asking God to come and change our hearts and lives in such a way that our behavior and the way we live flow from God living inside of us as believers.
Satan seeks to destroy us and our relationship with God by making us believe lies that things of this world will fill the holes in our hearts. Katy has written and sung an exceptional set of songs based on the truth that deals with the identity struggle we all face knowing that as children of God we are made in His image, and we are made whole only by His love.
We’re called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have on the cross of Jesus. We’re free from our fears, addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism. Jesus came to die for us so that we can all truly live in Him.
This song has become my anthem, and I sing along at the top of my lungs to the sincere and emotive lyrics of submission in the refrain: “God is in this story/God is in the details/Even in the broken parts/He holds my heart, He never fails/When I'm at my weakest/I will trust in Jesus/Always in the highs and lows/The One who goes before me/Always in the highs and lows/The One who goes before me/God is in this story.” Amen to that!
