They Had Us At Hello | Posted September-22-2014
Years ago, multiple time Battle of the Bands winners We Are Leo caught the attention of Ben Kasica (formerly of Skillet, now a producer), who says he was automatically a fan. In 2011 the group released their first album, Hello, and I guess you could say they've had us ever since. After touring with the likes of Skillet, Family Force 5 and House of Heros, We Are Leo has quite the impressive track record. Fans may relate their sound to that of Owl City or the lyricism of Switchfoot, both of which are huge compliments.

David Duffield, the band's frontman, explains the mission of their ministry: "I want to make music that grabs people's attention." They seem to have accomplished that goal with their Dream Records debut Fightback Soundtrack, a synth pop record sure to keep you intrigued as to what's next from these guys.

Beginning the album with their signature vibrant sound, "Yours4Sure" speaks of their loyalty to God for life. "Phoenix" is an anthem, proclaiming the motivational words "I will rise when the world is burning down around me," much like the title track encourages listeners to never give up or stop believing. "Epic" brings a dubstep/techno vibe, a sound that's constant through much of the album. Songs like "Diamonds In The Dark" and "Fire Inside You" center on Christ being the light in the darkness and allowing Him to shine through us.

The topic of letting go of the past and clinging to God's new mercies is presented in "Yesterday's Gone," and radio single "You're The Best Thing" boasts thankfulness for the relationship we have with our Father. Coming over to the worshipful side of things, "Northern Lights" is a love song of sorts to God and "Until Forever" ends the record nicely with lyrics of praise.

Closing Thoughts:

Fightback Soundtrack seems to have an evolved, more mature sound than the band's previous release. Bolder melodies, stronger lyrics and loads of energy are just a few things that make this album such a success. We Are Leo fans should be proud, seeing as the project was completely funded through Kickstarter and overwhelming fan support. It's been a three year wait to hear new music from the guys, but it proves to be well worth it.

While it's true they had us at Hello, Fightback is a sure sign that they don't plan to stop there.

The Best Is Yet to Come | Posted September-15-2014
#Faster EP is the first release from Word Entertainment artist Group 1 Crew since frontwoman Blanca Callahan stepped down. The band, now fronted by Manwell Reyes, is showing that the change hasn't slowed them down a bit. Boasting a resume that consists of 5 Dove Awards, multiple collaborations with diverse artists and being a part of tours such as WinterJam, it's clear that G1C has been well received by their listeners.

#Faster is the first in a series of coming releases, with the #Stronger EP set to drop digitally on November 4 and a full-length album hitting shelves in spring 2015.

"The Wonder Years," a duet with Christian music darling Moriah Peters, is encouragement to enjoy the time we have on earth and make the most of it while we have the chance: "stop living for tomorrow and live within this moment."

Easily the most lyrically creative track featured here, radio single "A Little Closer" ventures out into the worshipful side of the record while still keeping true to its pop theme. The song is a prayer of wanting to look more like God and the journey of every day becoming a little more like Him: "there's a beauty and beast inside of me / who I am fighting who I want to be / but through the rise and falls, the rollercoaster/ I get a little closer."

Coming to life with the guest vocals of Jonathan Thulin, "Heaven" takes on a techno beat and pulls it off well, supplying us with a great tune to dance to. On "Everyday Is A Miracle," Reyes's voice blends beautifully with powerhouse vocalist Rachael Lampa and speaks of how valuable our lives are. Closing out the five song collection, "Psalm 23" puts band member Sarah Sandoz's impressive vocal range on display and serves as a scripture-packed upbeat reminder of God's promises to us that He'll never leave us.

Closing Thoughts:

Few EPs come across as well-produced as #Faster does. Every track is seemingly flawless in all areas including powerful lyrics, catchy beats and well-paired collaborations. Being the first project away from Blanca's partnership, I can imagine fans of Group 1 Crew were curious as to what the band would sound like now, if they would stay true to the sound that first caught our attention. With that curiosity being met by incredible new music, it appears that fans have taken well to the change and that, indeed, the best is yet to come from G1C.

A New Sound | Posted September-09-2014
Classical-pop quintet Veritas is introducing a new sound to the contemporary Christian music scene. The five guys--Jordan, James, Jeff, Andrew and Scott--each bring much experience and training to the group. Together they produce a somewhat different yet enjoyable sound for their listeners that is put on the forefront in their recently released self-titled album. A combination of both new songs and old favorites, Veritas gives variance to the sonic landscape and leaves every type of music covered.

The album is given a powerful start by beginning with the popular worship song "Agnus Dei," which features the five-part harmony mastered by the group. Booming out with a symphony of instruments, the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard "You'll Never Walk Alone" makes an appearance in the collection of songs next to Switchfoot's hit "Dare You To Move." The MercyMe signature tune, "I Can Only Imagine" is also included here, beginning in a beautiful piano melody and building up to a strong orchestra of sounds.

Standout track "The Hand That Holds The Storm" speaks of the hard times of life and God's truths that remain through it all: "here comes the rain / but don't forget the promise He made." Bringing out their patriotic side, "American Anthology" is a well-done medley of such songs as "America The Beautiful", "God Bless America", and "Battle Hymn Of The Republic." Matt Redman's huge success "10,000 Reasons" is beautifully redone here with the strong background of instruments only adding to the power of the moment.

The album comes to a close with the John Legend classic "If You're Out There" and a moving version of "The Lord's Prayer."

Closing Thoughts:

Veritas has a lot to offer music lovers - from favorite worship songs to old classics, this album seems to have it all. Backed by smooth vocals that blend beautifully from start to finish and pitch-perfect harmonies, the group has mastered an unmistakable new sound - a sound that could very well be a breath of fresh air into the world of Christian music.

An Offering Of Worship | Posted September-05-2014
Powerhouse gospel vocalist and worship leader Jaye Thomas is back for the first time since his debut in 2008. This time, he brings us a Spirit-filled album recorded live at the OneThing Conference and appropriately named Here Is My Worship. After coming from a long line of minsters and studying jazz at Duke University, it's no surprise that Jaye is not only good, but also passionate at what he does.

With the help of vocal ensemble The Cry singing background, this album finds the diversity to catch you from the beginning and keep your attention until the last note.

"Oh Come Let Us Adore Him / Come Holy Spirit" takes a Christmas classic and tastefully turns it into a simple song of praise, setting the tone of worship for the rest of the album. Well known worship songs like "Agnus Dei", "Holy Is The Lord", and "O Lord You're Beautiful" make their way into the final cut, with each version giving a new sound to the already well-done tracks. "Treasure" places emphasis on the value of God and the reward we have in Him, while "Clean" talks of our strive to be pure and right in His eyes.

"Fill Me" and "We Make Room" are moving prayers for more of God and His presence. Such songs as "How Long - Praise Adonai", "Simple Song", "Here Is My Worship", and closing song "We Won't Stop" serve as powerful yet catchy and memorable calls to worship God for all He is and all He's done.

Closing Thoughts:

There's no doubt that Jaye Thomas is talented and this album is proof of that. His silky smooth yet fearlessly solid voice controls every track, leading his audience of 25,000 into a wonderful time of anointed worship. Big things are sure to be in store for any man who puts as much passion and soul into his projects as Jaye has demonstrated here.

Burning Up For God | Posted September-05-2014
Texas friends Dusty, Zach, and Tristan go by the name Climbing Blind, inspired by the story of Zacchaeus. As a band, they've been ministering together strongly for almost two years and say they have no plans of slowing down. With one of their most important goals being to invest into the spiritual wellbeing of those they interact with, the group takes great strides to make music that glorifies their Creator. With their second EP, Burn, they do just that.

Opening the set of songs with good energy, the title track, "Burn," acts as an declaration of their faith. Just as the name suggests, the song talks about being on fire for God and not being able to keep it to themselves. Slowing down a bit, "Help Is On The Way" is a song of redemption and faith in God's power to rescue: "when it all seems lost / call on the power of Jesus' name / it's over now / help is on the way.

"You Alone" is another anthem of sorts. The lyrics declare God's safety for us and touch on His being our Hope, our Strength, and our Refuge. Taking the energy level back down to close out the EP, "Grace" is a song of reverence for the amazing grace we're offered : "my only hope is found in holding You.

Closing Thoughts:

For a band who's been doing this for only a short two years, this EP was surprisingly solid. The vocals came through as strong and seasoned with sung well-written lyrics. A mature release, Burn proves to be a good start for the guys of Climbing Blind.

Encouragement for the Fight | Posted September-01-2014
While Kathryn Scott's voice may not be incredibly familiar to you, you've probably heard her music. The songstress behind the popular worship songs "Hungry" and "At The Foot Of The Cross" has been working to craft songs for the church since the 90s. Growing up in a Christian home with an interest in piano and singing, it's no surprise that Kathryn has become a pastor, worship leader and Godly family woman herself.  Her background, powerhouse vocals and ability to write timely lyrics compliment each other and are well packaged into her new EP Sing On The Battlefield.

"Father (Generous and Kind)" highlights the personality and heart of our God for His children. Showing off the sweeter side of Scott's voice, "Always Good" is a reminder of His promises and His love for us. "I Will Stay" sings of the importance of being in His presence, and then goes into her beautiful version of "Oh How I Love Jesus."

The theme of God's faithfulness to us in the trials of life is seemingly constant in this collection of songs. "We Still Believe" declares our constant faith in the times life hits hard, much like "Sing On The Battlefield" paints a picture of how we find our joy in Christ even when we're fighting tough battles. The song then goes on into the old hymn "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms" which fits well into the subject. Her rendition of "Sovereign Over Us" is an emotional ballad that speaks of His faithfulness in our lives: "even when the enemy means for evil / You turn it for our good and for Your glory / even in the valley / You are faithful / You're working for our good and for Your glory." The EP comes to close with a shortened reprise of the title track.

Closing Thoughts:

"Sing On The Battlefield" seems to be flawless. Kathryn's vocals are surprisingly silky and sweet, yet strong and soulful, giving variance to the songs found here. The EP serves as a strong group of worship songs for those facing rough places in life, offering reminders that He is still worthy of praise. Kathryn's heart for God and for worship is passionately displayed here and has made an incredibly enjoyable listen for her fans.

Songs for the Kingdom | Posted August-29-2014
Irish worship group Bluetree has been crafting songs for the Church since the early 2000s, and they seem to get more passionate about their calling as time goes on. After a number of studio albums and live projects, Bluetree is releasing Worship & Justice as their first musical partnership with Integrity Music. The songs on this album are firm statements of what they believe and their conviction that even if we don't praise God, the rocks will cry out in praise. Either way, God will get the glory, and the band does a great job of emphasizing that truth.

"It Is Finished" begins the album with a declaration of the power of the cross: "the cross has done it / the work is over." The next two tracks, "My Redeemer Lives" and "Jesus Healer," focus on praising God for who He is and all He's conquered. Continuing the theme of praise, "Each Day" and southern-sounding "Magnify" are moments of worship thanking God for His faithfulness every day of our lives.

Standout cut "New Creation" proclaims strong Biblical truths and puts them in a way that connects on a deep level with listeners. The remaining songs rounding out this album revolve around another theme: God's sovereignty in every season of life and how worthy that quality is of praise. "You'll never let me go" are words sung in faith that we find in "Rest," another great worship moment. "My Rock" and "You Were You Are" thank God for being the constant solid ground for us, no matter what we're facing.

Closing Thoughts:

It can certainly be said of Worship & Justice that it's one of the strongest sets of worship songs we've heard in a while. Every song centers around the theme of praise, yet they all have a different message, and they all are easily relatable to listeners. An album of this strength suggests that Bluetree may be in the peak of their career, and good things are on the horizon for this group set on fire for God's kingdom.

A Light Into The Darkness | Posted August-11-2014
Since 2006, Willet brothers Jeremy, Justin and Jordan have been making music for two main reasons: God and people. Instead of working with a record label, the trio from Maryland has chosen to stay independent and use the support of New Missions Systems International. The guys have hearts for global missions and reaching people in every part of the world. They partner with mission send-outs and stay involved in child sponsorships and community transformation projects in places like Haiti and the UK.

Although the group has released a few EPs, Searchlight is their first full length album. The name seems perfectly fitted to their mission: to shine a Light to every corner of the world, reach the lost and spread the good news of Jesus Christ.

The title track opens the record by proclaiming the power of God's word, declaring it is a searchlight to those lost in darkness. "Empty Grave" pulls off a bit of a southern sound, and combines the well-played instruments with the lyrical strength of Jesus setting us free. I can imagine Willet starting their live shows with "Show Us Your Unfailing Love," as it brings the energy up and captures the attention of listeners right away. Beginning with a beautiful piano melody, "Blessings Flow From Grace" proves to be a strong worship track and speaks of the daily new mercies of God.

At first listen, "Lowest Moment" stood out to me. The song carries the theme of praise to God for being constant even when we're at our lowest. Lyrics like "in my lowest moment / highest praise due Your name" and the powerful vocal overlay towards the end make this cut the most enjoyable one found here by far. "I Won't Withhold Anything" encourages us to give all we are to God, and closer "Did You Mean What You Said?" seems to be a letter to a friend about the faith they once shared.

Closing Thoughts:

As far as debut records go, Searchlight comes through as a strong effort. There were a few weak points, but considering the brothers did it all themselves and it was their first experience cutting an entire album, flaws can be mostly overlooked. For a band who leads a lot of youth camps and retreats, the album seems to overall be a great set of worship songs. With some work, Willet could soon be a breakout band in Christian music.

Back And Better Than Ever | Posted July-21-2014
In June, the news broke that California worship pastor and Christian music mainstay Lincoln Brewster would be re-signing with Integrity Music, his record label for over a decade now. This news accompanied the even more exciting announcement that he would be releasing his ninth studio album on August 19. With the exception of a 2012 Christmas record, Oxygen is Brewster's first album in almost four years. Despite the lengthy period of time between releases, Oxygen proved to be worth the wait, and it seems Lincoln is back and better than ever.

In some cases, the first beats and lyrics of a project set the tone for the tunes that follow, and that is certainly true in this case. From the opening notes of "Live To Praise You," we can expect a high-energy pop theme throughout, as well as the lyrical theme of praising God for His goodness and faithfulness regardless of our circumstances, as stated in the first lines: "day after day / You never change." Up next is the title track, explaining the title with the declaration "I need you more than oxygen."

Radio single "Made New" serves as an encouragement to listeners that God can redeem anyone, while "There Is Power" and "On Our Side" proclaim timeless truths of the great power in the name of Jesus, reminding that He is always for us. Worshipful "You Never Stop" and "Heartbeat" continue the pattern of thanking God for His great love, with the latter also being a prayer to come together as one Body of Christ and be more like Him.

Honestly, there's not a bad song on the album, but the standout moment is the shining "Sinking Ships (Rescue Has Come)," which shows off Brewster's versatile voice and falsetto against beautiful instrumentation. The song tells a captivating story of God coming to our rescue when we're hurting or in need. Equally strong track "Whole Again (Come Alive)" follows close behind. In this softer cut, Lincoln's vocals are once again put on display to sing of God's redemption in the broken and painful parts of life. Closing out the album just as it began, "Shout It Out" is an energetic call to believers to praise God for all He's done and to tell the world about His goodness.

Closing Thoughts:

Oxygen seems to be the perfect mix of emotions. In the course of just eleven tracks, you'll find songs that make you want to dance, songs that make you want to cry, and songs that leave you in a posture of worship and praise to God for all He is. Lincoln has been renovating modern Christian worship music since his debut, giving it more of a rock edge, and that shines through in this project as well. The guitar riffs that he's known for make an appearance in several cuts and give the project the signature sound we've all come to know and love from him over the years. I'm sure Lincoln Brewster fans will agree when I say Oxygen left me wanting more, and it could easily be considered his best work yet. This album was definitely worth the wait.

Songs to Anchor You | Posted July-21-2014
Colton Dixon captured the hearts of season 11 American Idol watchers. His talent and passion landed Dixon a seventh place finish in 2012. His voice impressed listeners all across the country, but still more impressive was the way he exited the show: on his knees worshipping His Savior on national television. He took his last few moments of attention and put the spotlight back on God, a pattern that seems to repeat often throughout his career.

The Tennessee resident and member of the Sparrow Records family made his first major impact on the Christian music world when he released "You Are" as his first single. After the success of the song and the hype of his first album A Messenger, it's easy to see why his fans were so excited at the news of a new project set to drop mid August. Anchor, Dixon's sophomore release, lives up to their excitement.

The album begins with an intro titled "SOS" that feeds straight into "Our Time Is Now," a co-write with TobyMac that was debuted at WinterJam earlier this year. "Walk On The Waves" follows the faith theme we find in this collection of songs with lyrics like "He's got your hands, your heart, your life / so don't be afraid to walk on the waves."

The title track "Anchor" boasts faith in God being the stronghold to grasp in the storms, much as "Through All Of It" worships Him for the way He is constant through every season of life. Prayers like "Echo" and the first single "More Of You" display Colton's silky vocals as it asks for life to look more like Him and less like us.

"Dare To Believe" challenges listeners to keep the childlike faith they first found even when things get hard, while "This Isn't The End" is encouragement to push through hard times knowing there are better things ahead. Closing out the album on a strong note, "Limitless" speaks of moving past the labels the world tries to place and relying on God's power to work through us in seemingly impossible situations.

Closing Thoughts:

Anchor surpasses expectations and shows off Colton's talent in new ways. For such a young artist, an album of this caliber is truly amazing. Every song was well-produced from start to finish. With powerful, thought-provoking lyrics and catchy melodies, it can easily be said this is the best work yet to come from the Colton Dixon crew. His band shined in big ways as well, making the rock-driven tracks an enjoyable listen and creating a beautiful atmosphere of worship on the more intimate tracks. With a career that seems to just be getting started, Anchor is a sure sign that only good things are ahead from Colton Dixon.
