While Kathryn Scott's voice may not be incredibly familiar to you, you've probably heard her music. The songstress behind the popular worship songs "Hungry" and "At The Foot Of The Cross" has been working to craft songs for the church since the 90s. Growing up in a Christian home with an interest in piano and singing, it's no surprise that Kathryn has become a pastor, worship leader and Godly family woman herself. Her background, powerhouse vocals and ability to write timely lyrics compliment each other and are well packaged into her new EP Sing On The Battlefield.
"Father (Generous and Kind)" highlights the personality and heart of our God for His children. Showing off the sweeter side of Scott's voice, "Always Good" is a reminder of His promises and His love for us. "I Will Stay" sings of the importance of being in His presence, and then goes into her beautiful version of "Oh How I Love Jesus."
The theme of God's faithfulness to us in the trials of life is seemingly constant in this collection of songs. "We Still Believe" declares our constant faith in the times life hits hard, much like "Sing On The Battlefield" paints a picture of how we find our joy in Christ even when we're fighting tough battles. The song then goes on into the old hymn "Leaning On The Everlasting Arms" which fits well into the subject. Her rendition of "Sovereign Over Us" is an emotional ballad that speaks of His faithfulness in our lives: "even when the enemy means for evil / You turn it for our good and for Your glory / even in the valley / You are faithful / You're working for our good and for Your glory." The EP comes to close with a shortened reprise of the title track.
Closing Thoughts:
"Sing On The Battlefield" seems to be flawless. Kathryn's vocals are surprisingly silky and sweet, yet strong and soulful, giving variance to the songs found here. The EP serves as a strong group of worship songs for those facing rough places in life, offering reminders that He is still worthy of praise. Kathryn's heart for God and for worship is passionately displayed here and has made an incredibly enjoyable listen for her fans.
