Awesome | Posted February-19-2010
I've loved "The Difference" ever since I saw their music video for it. Great lyrics, great sound. "I Can't Stand To Fall" and "Another Name" are awesome too! I can see what Andrew means about "My Hippocratic Oath"; when Jesus fixes us we don't go to sleep and get numbed. The only song I don't have is "The Ascension"

....talks about it honestly, no holds barred, nothing to hide. I'm surprised he can say talk about his sinful nature/past so openly. And while I like what he has to say about purity, I'm not sure about having accountability groups. You don't have to tell everybody everything about what you think in your head, do you?

Fireflight didn't once hit a sour note! All the songs were awesome. I liked that they had some soft ones too. You could almost worship to some of the songs. No use picking favorites. :D

How I listened | Posted January-29-2010
Mostly one track at a time, finally finishing it today. I like the title track a lot. The others are good, but with the weird unlisted end parts to songs, and the last song going all around the place, it fell flat at the end.

Good album | Posted January-29-2010
The only song that stood out was "Nothing Else". The others kind of blended on into the next. Is it just me or does anyone else think the lead singer sounds like an '80's woman singer a bit?

If this goes gold | Posted January-28-2010
I'd be surprised. It'd be a funny headline, but.....I like the songs well enough, it's just that nothing stood out extremely. That being said, I like the 2 songs they're offering free, "I Am Loved" and "The Golden Rule" (chorus a little obvious on the latter though.)

Inspiring and Beautiful | Posted January-27-2010
"Everyone has a past.” But what would you do if your past was holding you back from your future? What if you found yourself living a lie? Or letting your faith grow cold? And how can you ever forgive somebody who’s not what you thought they were? Shades of Blue is full of lessons about love, healing, forgiveness and the sanctity of life.
The story centres around Brad Cutler, his fiance, Laura James and Emma Landon, Brad’s high school sweetheart. 9 years ago Brad and Emma gave in to temptation and conceived a child. Rather than raising the child or giving it up for adoption, Brad convinces Emma to have an abortion. Now, before he can commit in marriage to Laura, he feels called to reunite with Emma to apologize for causing the death of their baby. Emma must embrace God’s forgiveness, the love she feels so unworthy of. And Laura must have the strength to forgive Brad for his mistakes and continue to love him. It's a very personal project for Kingsbury, who found herself in Brad's place several years ago when an acquaintance asked for a ride to an abortion clinic and she agreed.
I always cry at one point or another during Karen Kingsbury’s books because you can see each scene play out, feel the pain each person's experiencing. Shades of Blue is no exception. The part that did it for me was when Emma recalls being with a teacher friend of hers who gave birth to a stillborn premature baby. It's the moment where she sees the consequences of her actions.
The only thing about this book that didn't ring true for me was the easy way that everybody seemed to forgive Brad and Emma when they admitted what they'd done. Personally, though, I think the problem was with me and my mindset, not the story. The idea of just moving on after someone drops a bomb on you is so counterintuitive, yet everything about Jesus' life was, too. You might want to spend a little time in Luke chapter 6 after reading this book, as Laura James did. (Hint; logs and specks.)
You might expect a book about the consequences of murdering an innocent baby to take a decidedly accusatory stance. Shades of Blue is not a condemning diatribe, but rather a beautiful story of grace, healing and forgiveness. One that desperately needs to be told.

Great except | Posted January-27-2010
....I'm not sure what the point was of "faking my own suicide". "Deathbed" is long and is a testimony given by a dying man of his sinful life, waiting for Jesus to take him home now that he's given his life over to him. "Crayons" is silly, and "Pleading The Fifth" is strange. My favorite songs are "Must've Done Something Right" "The Best Thing" and "Forgiven"

How I Heard | Posted January-16-2010
I listened to most of this album while walking to the library. As a total experience, it's well done, but to take individual songs from it, the only one that really stood out was "How He Loves"
