Seventh Day Slumber is one of the most iconic and influential Christian rock bands. For over 20 years, they have been a consistently proud herald of the Gospel and have led many people to Christ thanks to their music and honest testimonies given at concerts. The band's frontman and founder Joseph Rojas is always looking for opportunities to grow the kingdom of Christ and Christian rock.
A few years ago, Joseph founded Rockfest Records, a music label focused on Christian rock and metal artists and bands. Seventh Day Slumber's member Jeremy Holderfield produces music for the label, alongside Joseph and many other talented artists. Rockfest has signed groups like The GFM Band, Amongst The Giants, and The Protest to name a few.
Seventh Day Slumber's career in Christian rock has included now 13 albums with three worship style-based records, and an EP, ultimately that have continued to encourage many listeners over the years. Here's a highlight of some of the best songs they've made during their expansive career, everything from hard-rocking songs to tender ballads.
From the band's newest record, Death By Admiration, comes one of the band's hardest-hitting rock songs, "What I've Become." The album's lead single exemplifies the band's continual growth with modern rock, incorporating guitar tones and vocal styles of major mainstream rock bands while retaining their signature sound.
Seventh Day Slumber is known not only for its passionate rock songs but also for its heartfelt contemporary worship music, consisting of both original and cover songs. Their 2021 album, Unseen: The Lion and The Lamb, is a rock worship album that fits the bill (the band released their last worship record, Love and Worship, seven years ago). The new album features Cody Carnes' "Run To The Father," one of the band's most well-performed covers. It's emotive and exemplary of the band's heart for worship music.
From 2019's Closer To Chaos, we hear a catchy and anthemic opening track, "Alive Again." The message is an intimate cry out to God to help us feel alive again after so much pain (this kind of message is a common theme in the band's music). "Alive Again" is an encouraging song, fitting for the band's rock and roll music.
Seventh Day Slumber has a loyal fanbase--and for good reason. Joseph Rojas is a vulnerable and honest man who shares his stories of life and listens to others' stories, too. For We Are The Broken, the band's songwriting was inspired by fans' stories posted on the band's social media pages. "Goodbye" is only one song on an album filled with heartbreakingly honest lyrics.
As mentioned previously, Seventh Day Slumber has released cover albums of contemporary worship music (some original songs as well). The trend started in 2009. After several rock hits to their name and an ever-growing fanbase, Seventh Day Slumber focused their efforts in a new direction. Take Everythingwas the first album focused on contemporary worship-based songs and covers of popular ones, such as Hillsong Worship's "From The Inside Out." With this song, the band took note of what resonated with fans moving forward. And the impact is felt in their music today.
When I think of great Tooth and Nail Records rock albums, Seventh Day Slumber's Finally Awake comes to mind. It is the band's fifth studio album that peaked at #16 on the Billboard Christian Albums Chart in 2007. The album features some of the band's grittiest rock songs, such as "Last Regret" and "Burning Bridges." But the opening song, "Awake," is a great balance of gritty rock music and catchy, celebratory choruses that touched fans and gained new ones. With a raw and rare (for the band) music video to accompany the song, it became a staple in the band's live shows even today.
Before the band focused on stripped-back, worship songs, their first major hit in the acoustic side of music was "Caroline" in 2005. Seventh Day Slumber's first major label release (fourth overall) saw the band partnering with BEC Recordings. Once Upon A Shattered Life received a much more polished production quality. And the album's songs quickly gained the attention of rock fans and radio stations. "Caroline" influenced the band in big ways moving forward. It's one of the most touching songs they've ever written.
