Mack Brock has an impressive resume. He's a founding member of Elevation Worship. Not to mention he's co-written "O Come to the Altar," "Resurrecting," "Do It Again," and "Greater Things." Last year, he released his debut solo album, Greater Things. And, this year, he followed that up by releasing his Covered EP. Both projects feature melodic, worshipful songs all focused on singing the truth about God's character and His Word.

Every Mack Brock song focuses me as a listener to join others in praise, worship and adoration of Jesus. These are great songs to pray along with these anointed worship leaders to express allegiance to Him, with longings to know Jesus and be in His presence. I really love how expressive these songs are. All of these songs are poignant and powerful with earnest, worshipful lyrics. This is one of the top worship albums of the past year. I had the chance to speak with Mack about "Covered."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

This was the first song I wrote for this project. Every year, my wife and I choose a word to focus our hearts. In years past, this has been our expectation or clarity if we're praying about a big change. And this year, we chose the word 'covered.' In the season that we're in, we want to constantly remind ourselves that God is always walking before us, guarding our backs. Always right beside us. God is with us and He is providing a full sphere of covering around us as individuals.

'Covered' really resonated for us this year. This idea of when we rest in the presence of Jesus, not only is He going to do what is beneficial for us, He is going to exceed our expectations. Scripture tells us He's going to go above and beyond all we can hope or imagine. I know, for me, I can get stuck in this mindset of asking the Lord to help me in situations. And having desires that I want to see God fulfill in my life. We need to remember that God is with us and He’s going to do more than we can imagine and more than our hearts desire. That’s where this song came from and it's the theme of this whole project.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Lamentations 3:22-23 (VOICE): "How enduring is God's loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new! Your faithfulness, God, is as broad as the day."

Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV): "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved."

Ephesians 2:13 (NKJV): "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ."

Ephesians 1:10 (MSG): "He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him, everything in deepest heaven; everything on planet earth."

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Romans 8:11 (VOICE): "If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you."

Ephesians 3:14-21 (NKJV): "For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

Matthew 17:20 (NIV): He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

What is the takeaway message?

Another theme in this song is when we think about what God does in our lives, we think about things we want to see Him do, or specific things we want to see happen. And, I wanted to focus on meeting God: "Not for all that You can do/God the miracle is You," which is in the lyrics. I want us to focus on just Him. He’s enough and God alone exceeds our expectations. God alone goes far beyond all we can think or imagine. It’s this balance of just receiving Him and letting Him be enough for us, while at the same time, He's more than enough for us.

The songs on the new EP have been me wrestling with God, fighting to accept that it's okay to let go and hand things over to Him. To trust Him. Letting go doesn’t always take away the stress or anxiety right away, but it does give us the grace and peace we need to walk through it. To find rest in His presence, His sovereignty, His love and trust that we are ‘Covered’ by Him.

Lyrics

Here I am I am ready to receive
Everything You want in me, there is more
Here I am
There is nothing in the way
Oh that You would find my faith, an open door
Oh that You would find my faith, an open door

Let Your presence cover me
Let Your presence cover me
In Your presence I receive
Far beyond what I could fathom
You exceed my expectations

Meet me here
Holy Spirit in this place
Let Your glory lead the way
I am Yours
Meet me here
Not for all that You can do
God the miracle is You and nothing more
God the miracle is You and nothing more

Let Your presence cover me
Let Your presence cover me
In Your presence I receive
Far beyond what I could fathom
You exceed my expectations
More than I could ask or imagine
In You, I will find every blessing
More than I could ask or imagine
In You, I will find every blessing
More than I could ask or imagine
In You, I will find every blessing

More than I could ask or imagine
In You, I will find every blessing, oh-ohh
More than I could ask or imagine
And in You, I will find every blessing
More than I could ask or imagine
In You, I will find every blessing
Let Your presence cover me
Let Your presence cover me
In Your presence I receive
Far beyond what I could fathom
You exceed my expectations
Far beyond what I could fathom
You exceed my expectations

Closing Thoughts

For many years, Mack Brock's ministry has been a way to put Scripture into the minds, hearts, and mouths of believers everywhere in a fresh and creative way. This allows listeners to be edified and to be drawn to the presence of the Lord. It allows listeners to call out and to desire to be in His presence.

"Covered" helps set my mind on Christ, to let the distractions of the day melt away and instead focus on worshiping the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. This song is a great way to allow the truth of the Gospel to soak in with the chorus: "Let Your presence cover me/In Your presence I receive/Far beyond what I could fathom/You exceed my expectations." That’s the filling of the Holy Spirit described in Romans 8:11.

The Lord wants to use us, drawing us closer to Himself and sending us out "covered" with His spirit. God's mercy is new each day. It's not based on our performance or what we can do for Him. He pours out His mercy despite what we've done. And, there's nothing we can do except to trust in His Son, Jesus. We can't earn Heaven; It's only through complete surrender to Jesus and putting all of our hope in Him that we can be saved.

Mack Brock’s music truly sets me apart from daily distractions and circumstances, causing me to focus all of my attention on Jesus. Something the Lord has been teaching me in writing these devotionals over the past 12 years is to point people to the truth of Scripture found in these songs of faith, as it can bring us back to Him. This song is all about having a strong faith. Without faith, it's impossible to please God.

Sometimes we have a tendency to think we can try to know everything. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. We shouldn't wait to fix ourselves before we step out in faith. We need to fully trust God. A theme verse for me for these devotionals has been Romans 8:11. And, God keeps bringing the truth of His resurrection power through His Holy Spirit residing in believers to my attention. That's the beauty of His Word. It doesn't return void. Instead, it provides a constant source of comfort, guidance, and how to draw closer to Him.

The Lord wants to use us, drawing us closer to Himself and sending us out filled with His Spirit. I can't get enough of this song, especially the bridge: "More than I could ask or imagine In You/I will find every blessing." Amen to that.
