Mack Brock has an impressive resume. He's the founding member of Elevation Worship, and a co-writer of songs like "O Come to the Altar." Brock has also lended his talents to co-writing and leading Elevation's hit songs, "Resurrecting" and "Do It Again." Now, the singer-songwriter has just released his debut solo album, Greater Things.

The project features melodic, worshipful songs all focused on singing the truth of God's character and delivering His Word into the hearts of listeners. I really love how expressive these songs are. They're poignant and powerful with earnest, worshipful lyrics. For me, this is one of the top worship albums of the past year. I had the chance to speak with Mack about the album's title track, "Greater Things."

Please tell me the personal story behind the song.

"Greater Things" was one of the first songs I wrote in this new season for me and my family. It was also the first song we recorded for this new record. We didn't go into the writing room with a theme in mind. Instead, we spent time catching up on what's been happening in our lives. This included how the Lord has been working in and around us. We discussed how important it is to trust in God. This helped us establish a theme of not knowing what we are walking into next. At first, we came up with the chorus: "You never fail/You never will/I trust Your name for greater things." We rested on that for a long time and it led to the other parts of this song. The verses are about living in our current season. And, then moving from that season to another, knowing the truth that no matter how we feel, we can trust God. He always comes through and He never fails.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Lamentations 3:22-23 (VOICE): "How enduring is God's loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new! Your faithfulness, God, is as broad as the day."

Deuteronomy 4:39 (NIV): "Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other."

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Romans 4:3 (NLT): For the Scriptures tell us, "Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith."

Isaiah 43:19 (VOICE): "Watch closely: I am preparing something new; it's happening now, even as I speak, and you're about to see it. I am preparing a way through the desert; Waters will flow where there had been none."

Jeremiah 33:3 (VOICE): "Call to Me, and I will answer you. I will tell you of great things, things beyond what you can imagine, things you could never have known."

Matthew 17:20 (NIV): He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

Ephesians 3:14-21 (NKJV): "For this reason, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."

What is the takeaway message?

One of my favorite lines in "Greater Things" is: "I'll take each step with Your confidence." There's something special about the idea that no matter what we're stepping into, when we know the Lord is guiding and leading us, we can have confidence. A scripture passage that my wife and I are comforted by is Joshua walking around the walls of Jericho and his faith journey. Faith is walking into the unknown and living in that balance. We need to have trust and open handedness. That changes our perspective. Knowing God was changing my assignment from being on staff at Elevation Church to something new and different was honestly terrifying. Not knowing what's next and stepping out in faith can be terrifying for all of us, but we serve a good God, a big God who doesn't leave us or forsake us. I'm learning that it's far more terrifying to not walk in obedience than it is to take that step into the unknown. This album has helped me with that journey. The songs on this project have been reminders to me of God's faithfulness and of His never-ending love for us. I hope that listeners find the same encouragement as I have in this season.

Lyrics:
My life is built on Your faithfulness
My hope is held in Your promises
I take each step with Your confidence
'Cause I am Yours
I am Yours

You never fail
You never will
I trust Your name for greater things
You will come through
You always do
I trust Your name for greater things

You cleared a way in the wilderness
You brought me back from my brokenness
You took my shame and You buried it
What You've done
I won’t forget

You never fail
You never will
I trust Your name for greater things
You will come through
You always do
I trust Your name for greater things

You never fail
You never will
I trust Your name for greater things
You will come through
You always do
I trust Your name for greater things

I will not fear for You are with me
I’ve seen this fight from the victory
No power of hell could stand against me
'Cause I’ve seen this from the victory, yeah

I will not fear for You are with me
I’ve seen this fight from the victory
No power of hell could stand against me
'Cause I’ve seen this from the victory

You never fail
You never will
I trust Your name for greater things
You will come through
You always do
I trust Your name for greater things

Closing Thoughts

For many years, God has used Mack Brock's ministry as a way to put scripture into the minds, hearts, and mouths of believers everywhere, in a fresh and creative way. That allows listeners to be edified and to be drawn to the presence of the Lord. "Greater Things" helps set my mind on Christ, to let the distractions of the day melt away and, instead, focus on worshiping the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The song is connected to the encouraging promise of Lamentations 3:22-23: "How enduring is God's loyal love; the Eternal has inexhaustible compassion. Here they are, every morning, new. Your faithfulness, God, is as broad as the day." God's mercy is new each day, and it's not based on our performance. It's not based on what we can do for God. He pours out His mercy despite what we've done. And, there's nothing we can do except trust in His Son, Jesus. We can't earn Heaven; it's only through complete surrender to Jesus and putting all of our hope in Him that we can be saved.

Mack Brock's music truly sets me apart from daily distractions and circumstances, causing me to focus all my attention on Jesus. Something the Lord has been teaching me in writing these devotionals over the past 11 years is to point people to the truth of scripture found in these songs of faith, as it can bring us back to Him. "Greater Things" is all about having a strong faith. Without faith, it's impossible to please God.

Sometimes we have a tendency to think we can try to know everything. God tells us in the Bible that with faith, we can do anything in Christ. We shouldn't wait to fix ourselves before we step out in faith. We need to fully trust God. A theme verse for me for these devotionals has been Romans 8:1: "And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you." God keeps bringing the truth of His resurrection power through His Holy Spirit residing in believers to my attention. That's the beauty of His Word: it doesn't return void, but provides a constant source of comfort and guidance, as well as a clear path to draw closer to him.

The Lord wants to use us, drawing us closer to Himself and sending us into the world, filled with His Spirit. I can't get enough of "Greater Things," especially the bridge, "I will not fear for You are with me/I've seen this fight from the victory/No power of hell could stand against me/'Cause I've seen this from the victory." Amen to that.
