In a move that suggests AI-generated content is meeting its match soon, Spotify, the largest streaming music platform in the world, has begun rolling out "Verified by Spotify," a new badge displayed on an artist's profile and in search results when an artist meets defined standards demonstrating authenticity and trust.
Currently available on mobile only when an artist's "About" profile is selected, the badge goes in-depth to establish that the artist is authentic, active, and trusted. It's already showing up on many mainstream artists' profiles, and a handful of Christian artists as well. Chris Tomlin's profile confirms that he's "grown an active fanbase" and "has met Spotify's criteria for profile authenticity," making him eligible for review. It also confirms he's released music since 2001, with over 100 releases, has been playlisted by Spotify's editors on specific playlists, has had recent concerts listed, and has claimed their profile.
Diving deeper into Spotify's posted policy shows that authenticity is reserved for real human artists, and the goal is to identify AI-generated artists and songs. "[This badge] signals a real artist behind the profile: We look for an identifiable artist presence both on and off-platform, such as concert dates, merch, and linked social accounts on their artist profile. At launch, profiles that appear to primarily represent AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for verification. In today’s music landscape, the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving, and we'll continue to develop our approach over time. Artists who use AI tools responsibly as part of their creative process are eligible for verification, as long as they present themselves authentically."
The music industry is currently in a high-speed race to ensure relevancy, and customer trust remains strong as a torrent of AI-generated artists flood streaming providers with millions of songs a month. Recent reports indicate that the number of AI-generated song submissions has jumped to 40 percent of total submissions–roughly 60,000 tracks per day as of March 2026. That's nearly two million AI-generated tracks being uploaded every month. In 2025 alone, Deezer detected and tagged over 13.4 million AI-generated tracks.
Fraud is a massive part of the problem for these platforms. In March 2026, a man in the United States pleaded guilty to flooding DSPs with thousands of AI-generated tracks and then boosting them with bots, resulting in billions of streams. In just a few years, he generated over $12 million dollars in royalty payouts. In many cases, AI is not only making the music, but also the audience.
It's encouraging to see the world's largest music platform begin to take steps to help listeners know what they are listening to.
