American Idol alumnus Clark Beckham has never shied away from pushing creative boundaries, and his stunning new rendition of the worship favorite “Goodness of God” by worship artist Jenn Johnson is no exception.

Known for his soulful vocals, deep musicality, and genre-blending artistry, Beckham reimagines the beloved worship anthem through rich harmonies, jazz-inspired chords, and a deeply personal piano-driven arrangement. More than just a fresh take on a familiar song, the release reflects Clark’s heart for authentic worship and his desire to reveal new dimensions of God’s beauty through music.

In this interview, Clark opens up about creativity in worship, emotional expression, artistic excellence, and the spiritual journey behind this unique project.

Your new rendition of “Goodness of God” feels very intimate and stripped back. What was happening in your personal worship life that inspired this piano/vocal arrangement?

When I think of the “Goodness of God," I think of my wife, my house, my career, my friends, my health, and the life that I have from doing what He's said to do. I think that's the key. Those things I just listed are gifts from God, but they came from living according to His way. So ultimately, the core of His goodness is the instruction He gives us in His Word. I look back on my life, and I imagine what it would be without His guidance, without living life His way, and that song comes out of me a little differently.

You mentioned that worship can sometimes feel confined to a certain style. How have your influences in pop, soul, and jazz helped you rediscover freedom and creativity in worship?

Music in worship is confined to a certain style when we think that congregational worship is the only way to access God. By falling in love with songs, harmonies, and chord progressions from classic artists such as The Beatles, Billy Joel, and Stevie Wonder, as well as the voices of Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green, I have always considered that artistic and emotional expression to be divine. Divine, not just as a synonym for amazing, but literally from God Himself. That's why when I worship, and it's just Him and me, I'm open to playing all the crazy chords that I know He loves even more than I do.

“Goodness of God” is already such a beloved, widely sung song. What did you want listeners to experience differently through your version?

I want them to know that God is in complex harmonies. My dream for this project is to show people an attribute of God they've never seen before by playing the chords and harmonies He created that we've closed ourselves off to.

This release is the first in a series of reimagined worship favorites. What drew you to this concept, and how are you choosing which songs to reinterpret?

All these arrangements came to me in my one-on-one time with God. It's very easy to just "play cool chords" that'll raise an eyebrow, but it's another thing to minister to the heart of God with beautiful, complex chords telling a story and expressing the raw emotion and conviction of each song. That's the goal of this project.

As someone known for both technical vocal ability and musicality, how do you balance excellence with authenticity when leading worship?

It's one and the same. In fact, you have to have authenticity with excellence; otherwise, you're just a resounding gong. You have to have personal excellence with authenticity; I'd question your heart. The worst is when people say, “Well, my heart’s in the right place" to justify why they didn't prepare for a song. I would challenge that if your heart was in the place of "do everything with all your heart, as if unto the Lord" — especially when you're literally singing unto the Lord — you would work to be the best you can possibly be. That doesn't mean you're perfect, but it probably means you at least know your part.

You’ve had a unique journey—from American Idol to performing with major artists and orchestras. How has that journey shaped your perspective on ministry versus performance?

I've learned that as a performer, there's no difference in singing "Goodness of God" and "Let's Stay Together." In "Goodness of God," you get to participate in an art of emotional expression through honest, deep-seated conviction that you believe every word you sing. It's the exact same process with "Let's Stay Together." The message is different, but once again, I'm swept away in this beautiful gift of God that is the musical art of emotional expression, and I'm singing about the very real human experience of wanting to stay with someone you love for the rest of your life. It's never about the singer, it's about the art of music: honest, emotional expression.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Artists like Bill Laurance, Tom Misch, Dijon, Sienne Spiro, Couch, Lizzy McAlpine, Tiny Habits, and more, I'm sure. But these are the first that come to mind.

What's next, and how can we be praying for you?

So much is next. I'm busier than I've ever been. My career is really starting to develop in three pillars, and I love them all: singing, teaching, and preaching. As a singer, I start my tour this week, and I'm recording and releasing something almost every month for the next year and a half or more. As a teacher, I teach modern music theory at The Belonging Co. College and Oaks College, and I host music workshops for church teams and colleges worldwide. As a preacher, I'm stepping into a calling God has had for me in the Church. I just finished preaching in Manila, Philippines, at a conference and have more booked in the future. You can pray for stewardship of these opportunities through wisdom, humility, and discipline.
