In honor of World Suicide Prevention Day 2018, we're taking a look at some songs that stand as reminders that your life matters and that there is hope in times of struggle.
Here at NRT, we believe that music is a powerful thing. We believe that music is a gift from God, and that, often, God speaks life-giving messages to us through the lyrics of these songs that we love so much. Be it a song you didn't even know you needed to hear that comes on the radio during your lunch break, or a very intentional decision to listen to your favorite song on a hard day, music is something that carries us through our worst times and gives us the words of others to cling to when we don't have the words ourselves.
In light of how helpful music is, this week we're making space to talk about a very important day—World Suicide Prevention Day (September 10)—and how music can play a part in this day. With the help of some friends who contributed their favorite songs, we've compiled a list of some tracks new and old that resonate with the message of this day: your life matters and it is worth the fight. Wherever you find yourself today, we want you to know that you are deeply loved by Christ and that He has a great purpose for your life.
If you've ever struggled to believe that, these songs are for you:
"God only knows what you've been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows how it's killing you
But there's a kind of love that God only knows"
"Every time that you wake up breathing
Every night when you close your eyes
Every day that your heart keeps beating
There's purpose for your life
So don't give up"
"I can feel your heartache, I know it's not okay
And I know you feel like you're gonna break, but don't pull away
And it's okay to feel, the way that you do
When you reach the end of yourself, I'll be there too"
"How many times have you heard me cry out
God please take this?
How many times have you given me strength to
Just keep breathing?
Oh I need you
God, I need you now"
"You feel stuck on the outside looking inside
Wishing this life wasn't your life
And you think you're damaged way beyond repair
Well you're not so far that I can't get to where you are"
"You say I am loved when I can't feel a thing
You say I am strong when I think I am weak
You say I am held when I am falling short
When I don't belong, oh You say that I am Yours"
