All Sons & Daughters recently announced they are hanging it up as a band, after blessing worshipers everywhere with their introspective and creative brand of original worship songs for the past seven years. We've been consistently singing many of their songs as part of my church worship services for years. They will be dearly missed. I have had the great opportunity to meet with David Leonard and Leslie Jordan and speak with them a total of ten times for behind the song devotionals over the past 10 years. We compiled those interviews together here.
Thinking about their influence and how I would compile my personal favorite songs of theirs to sing along with, I thought of these seven songs for a worship set list. Many of these songs have been sung by churches worldwide and have influenced today's modern worship movement. Regardless of your denomination or music style preference, these songs are all filled with biblical truth that we can sing along with and say "yes, and Amen." We will miss you, David and Leslie, and thank you for blessing us.
"I Am Set Free"
From their debut album Brokenness Aside, this anthem beautifully sets my heart in a worshipful posture with the bridge "Yes Lord we are grateful for your grace and for Your love."
"Called Me Higher"
"Called Me Higher" connects to my favorite passage of the Bible and my life verse, Isaiah 6:8 (NLT): "Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?' Then I said 'Here am I. Send me!'" The passage and the song stir me to answer my calling as a Christian to do God's will.
"Rising Sun"
The message is contemplative with the call to worship: "Praise Him all you sinners, sing oh sing you weary / Oh praise Him all you children of God, we lift high His glory / Shown throughout our stories, we praise Him as the children of God," which leads into the worshipful chorus "Our great Redeemer, Glorious Savior, Your name is higher than the rising sun / Light of the morning, You shine forever / Your name is higher than the rising sun."
"Christ Be All Around Me"
We sing this song at my church, and it in an incredible blessing to see and hear my young daughters sing these words to Jesus. This song is a great example of Church unity. It was written based on a prayer from Saint Patrick that any follower of Jesus can read and say yes and amen to every word. This song includes Truth from God's Word that I want to have in my family's minds, hearts and souls, to know that no matter what we are going through or facing in our lives, we can always know that "above and below me, before and behind me, in every eye that sees me, Christ be all around me."
"God with Us"
We also sing this song at my church. I love the lose yourself-in-the-moment sing-ability of "God with Us," in particular in the bridge: "You are here and You are holy, we are standing in Your glory Lord." The song gives us a foretaste of eternity and is a blessing to sing.
"I Surrender"
Based on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, I sing this song at the top of my lungs and proclaim to God: "Not my will but Yours be done, not my strength but Yours alone, nothing else but You alone, I find everything in You."
"Great Are You Lord"
"Great Are You Lord" takes you on an emotional journey that gives me goose bumps every time I hear the song. You'll be blessed by this powerful anthem with a convicting declaration: "All the earth will shout Your praise / Our hearts will cry, these bones will sing / Great are You, Lord." We live in a fallen and sinful world. One day we will have a new heaven and a new earth, and until then we need to all pray: "It's Your breath in our lungs / so we pour out our praise to You only."
