Sarah Reeves is deeply passionate about writing and leading songs that keep people's hearts and minds set on Jesus, as is clear from her popular YouTube channel. Sarah has had over 16 million views of her beautiful covers of worship songs like "Oceans" and "Lord, I Need You" and her original songs "Faithful" and "Let it Echo" (which she cowrote with Jesus Culture).
Although she has enjoyed singing worship covers on YouTube and songwriting for other artists, her personal ministry as an artist is falling back into place as she returns to making her own music. Sarah has recently signed a new recording contract with Word Records, part of the building excitement as she works on a new album. You might have heard Sarah singing her lead single "Nowhere" and "Faithful" at Winter Jam over the past few months. I had the chance to speak with Sarah in-person at Winter Jam in Reading, Pennsylvania about "Nowhere."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
This is one of my favorite songs. I wrote the song with Jason Ingram and Robert Marvin, my producer. I want this album that I'm working on to be authentic to who I am and the experiences and journey I've had over the past few years that I've been away from writing songs. I went through a tough season in my marriage a few years ago, and going through real life, I found myself in a dark place of depression and sin and in a real pit.
Growing up, I was a first born daughter, and I always felt that I had to do right things and tried not to do anything wrong. I was always a rule follower, and I felt like I had to earn my parents' approval. After going through that season of hitting rock bottom, I thought I would feel everything opposite of love from God, that He would shun me and judge me for doing so many things wrong in my life that I never thought that I would do.
But there came a point where I had this moment, and I fell to the ground. It was a very spiritual moment. I felt the Holy Spirit so strongly at that time, like when a parent gets on their hands and knees at the same level as their child. I truly repented, and instead of feeling shame, I felt Him get down on my level. Instead of shunning me, He pulled me close and wrapped me in His arms. I just felt His love deeper than I've ever known. The truth of His Word which says "nothing can separate us from His love" was so evident in the lowest point of my life.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Romans 8:38-39(NKJV): "For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
2 Corinthians 5:17(NKJV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
Ephesians 2:4-5(NIV): "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions---it is by grace you have been saved."
Psalm 139:17-18(NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You."
1 John 4:18-19(NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."
Hebrews 12:2(NKJV): "Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
What is the takeaway message?
God meets us right where we are, no matter how far we've fallen away. He is a Healer, Redeemer and Restorer. This song says there is nowhere that I can go that is away from His love. In that moment, I realized that "there is no condemnation for those that are in Christ Jesus," and I wrote this song out of that moment. It is an anthem.
My inner artist and worship leader have been battling each other for years, and I've put off the creativity in myself to settle for what I feel has been comfortable and safe. I have been challenged this year to not duplicate anyone else, but to pull creativity from the Creator of the universe. I have found such freedom, and my soul has come alive more than ever before while making this music.
Lyrics: You don't, You don't condemn
You always see my best
You make me confident
Oh...You lift my head
There's nowhere that I can go
There's nowhere that I can hide
When I feel like I'm alone
Your love and my heart collide
You wipe away my tears
And disarm my every fear
My biggest champion
Oh...to You I run
To You I run
You pull me in
You pull me in
You pull me in close
Sarah writes and sings piercing, relevant and moving songs. What's especially cool about her new song "Nowhere" is how she invites listeners into her life by sharing what's on her heart. She dwells on prayerful yearnings, lays out spiritual truths and worships God all at the same time. This song is a true celebration of the great biblical truth from Ephesians 3:20: "Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us."
I love this new song which has the pop sensibilities of artists like Ellie Goulding and yet professes the truth that as followers of Jesus, there is nowhere you can go that is outside of the reach of God's love. No matter where you are in your walk with Jesus, this song is a salvation message that Jesus, through The Holy Spirit, is by your side. His love for us will never change, and nothing can separate us from it. That's cause to celebrate. The Good News of the Gospel which this song perfectly portrays is that God accepts us no matter what we've done or what we are going through. As the song sings, "You don't, You don't condemn, You always see my best, You make me confident, Oh... You lift my head."
If you've put all of your hope and trust in Jesus, there is nothing that can separate you from His love. God sees us as He sees His Son. He knows our names, and He loves us so much that He came to die for us. Jesus invites us to come to Him, and He'll give us rest. Grace is freely given and isn't something we can earn by our good works. It is a gift from God by faith in Christ Jesus. The message of this song challenges listeners to think about our own doubts and how Jesus calls us to rely on Him and the power of His resurrection, to remember that He has overcome death and fear. This song is an offer of true release that we can sing with all of our hearts to Jesus: "There's nowhere that I can go, there's nowhere that I can hide, when I feel like I'm alone, Your love and my heart collide." Amen to that!
