AN NRT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Worship Fuels All These Sons & Daughters
NRT's Bill Lurwick chats with Leslie Jordan and David Leonard about the latest chapter in their individual musical stories.

Leslie Jordan has been leading worship since age 14, both in her own church and for churches and conferences across the United States. She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 2007 and was hired on staff at Journey Church in the Nashville suburb of Franklin, Tenn. as the Worship Designer in January 2008.

David Leonard grew up in Southeast Arkansas. He attended college at John Brown University. While attending the university, Leonard started the Word Records band Jackson Waters. After disbanding in 2008, Leonard began touring with the Atlantic Records rock band NEEDTOBREATHE, and completed his time with them in May 2010.

Jordan and Leonard met at Journey Church, and began writing honest worship songs for their church family. Their evolution into a duo—now called All Sons & Daughters—began when they started leading those songs together on Sunday mornings.

All Sons & Daughters' first EP, Brokenness Aside, was produced by Paul Mabury (Hillsong, Brandon Heath, One Sonic Society, Rocket Science). The project's songs, all written by Leonard and Jordan, reflect the environment of their church and the message of God's restorative love that Journey seeks to share with its community. The duo's first single, "All the Poor and Powerless" has generated buzz online and among various church communities around the country.

"David & Leslie have found a way to capture the thoughts, emotions and sounds of their local church & put them into songs," says Jay King, Integrity's vice president of A&R/Artist Development. "All Sons & Daughters is more than a worship band... they represent us as people who are still on a journey. And they are creating the soundtrack for that journey."

NRT's Bill Lurwick recently spoke with Jordan and Leonard about their new EP, and All Sons & Daughters.

David, you've done some work with Know Hope Collective, right?

I did. So has Leslie.

So is Will McGinnis, Mark Stuart and all those guys in Know Hope Collective part of Journey Church as well?

They are.

Awesome. You guys have a huge worship community there.

We’ve been blessed with the people that are around--just a lot of great hearts and a lot of experience.

Leslie, you’ve been leading worship since 14. Did that start in youth group?

Yeah. I picked up a guitar at around nine years old. So, I’d been playing for a while and during my freshman year in high school somebody in the youth group asked me to join the praise band team. I did, and there really was no looking back since then. So, that’s the way God has written my story. It’s been pretty awesome.

Could you explain what’s behind the group name “All Sons & Daughters”?

Originally it was just an idea that David came up with. The more we threw it around and the more we talked about it with other people, the more it fit with the direction of what we were doing. Obviously it explains that it’s a guy and a girl duo, the sons and daughters. But at the same time, what we're doing is for the all the sons and daughters of God—the Church at large. The movement of worship is a greater effort than just mine and David’s. So we hope that other people feel responsibility, especially our church, that they can call this project their own as well.

You guys will be out this summer, right?

We’re at a couple of different festivals. We’re doing a tour in September with Matt Maher and One Sonic Society and we’re really looking forward to that--just the community of those guys and what they’ve meant to us within the community of worship leaders.

I appreciate you joining us for a few minutes here at NewReleaseTuesday.com. Blessings to you, Leslie and David. Thanks for spending time with us.

Thank you so much.
