Following up on their hit song, “Tremble,” Mosaic MSC returned with their fourth album HUMAN in May 2020. Mosaic MSC is the worship music that carries the culture of the Mosaic church in Los Angeles, which is founded by cultural pioneer and best-selling author Erwin McManus.
HUMAN, Mosaic MSC's first live recording since 2016's Glory & Wonder, features all-new original songs previously only heard at Mosaic. The new album, recorded over the course of two nights in Hollywood, California, is an eight-track collection that embodies the heartbeat of humanity through music and performance.
The production presents a representation of the diverse artistic community with rotating vocalists, a six-piece band, a 40-person choir, and an audience of a thousand all from different cultural and social backgrounds. I had the chance to speak with Carlos Pimentel, songwriter and member of Mosaic MSC, about “Fountain (I Am Good).”
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
For this song “Fountain (I Am Good),” we feel like we, as a church, have messages that are connected to our diversity of backgrounds and experiences. We live in a city that has people from so many places who come with no previous faith in Jesus.
As a community, we speak to different types of people who come to our church, their age, and whatnot. When we write songs, we want to express who God is and the God we have come to know. So, that someone who doesn’t know Jesus can listen and make sense of what they're hearing.
As a dad, how can I make music that my kids can understand? The context of making music in Los Angeles has an influence on the type of music we're making.
With this song, the chorus says, “I am worthy, wanted, loved by You.” The song's message is a contrast to what I grew up listening to. I had to struggle with believing I wasn’t worthy: that there was no goodness in me. Here's something interesting. When God created us, He called us “very good.” He created goodness inside of us and He created us to worship Him.
As young people, we feel worthless. But, with this song, we're telling people that no matter how far they are from God, every single human is worthy of His love; They can receive His kindness, goodness, and love if they open their life to Jesus. This was the first song we wrote for this new album.
We wanted to write a song that let people sing God’s words over their life, that they are good, wanted, and chosen by Him. This song has served as a powerful reminder in worship of how grateful we are that God loves us and that He views us as worthy of His love.
Being fully human is a beautiful thing. It means understanding that we were created out of love and made worthy of being loved. Too often, society, or even our own inner narrative, tells us that we're unwanted and unloved. If we understood just how loved we are, it would unravel us to our core.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Psalm 139:14(NIV): "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Hebrews 12:1-2(NIV): "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of faith."
1 Peter 2:9(MSG): “But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God's instruments to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference He made for you--from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted.”
Ephesians 1:18(NIV): "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people."
Romans 12:2(VOICE): "Do not allow this world to mold you in its own image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. As a result, you will be able to discern what God wills and whatever God finds good, pleasing, and complete."
John 7:38(NKJV): "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water."
2 Corinthians 5:17(NKJV): "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
Ephesians 2:4-5(NIV): "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions---it is by grace you have been saved."
What is the takeaway message?
There are several scriptures connected to this song. God does see good in us. He sees everything. He sees our sins and our mistakes. He sees reflections of who He is in us. I love the name of this album, Human. Every time we talked about the title it always looked to me more like a question: What makes us human? Or how can I be more human?
It's interesting that we're in a season where staying at home and away from people is the best thing we can do to help one another. We need each other. It's part of what makes us better and what makes us human. This is one of the beautiful things about this album and the timing of it.
These songs were created by friends worshipping in a room together. Now, these songs are being heard by a lot of people in different places physically away from each other. This is us reminding the world ‘You are not alone.’ This is a look at the future and the hope that tomorrow will be better. The future of humanity will be different, but we will not be alone. We will be together.
Lyrics
There is a fountain Wrapped in a haze of light Flooded with goodness Rushing with words of life
They heal to the bone They’re sweet to my soul And I’m swept away
I am good
You say I’m good I am worthy Wanted Loved by You
This is living breathing proof
That I am chosen Wanted Loved by You I'm undone with love for You
There is a person Light running through His hands Speaking with kindness Brimming with gentleness
He heals to the bone He speaks straight to the soul And I’m swept away
Within all the joy And through all of the waiting I’m undone with love for You
And I could never forget The spirit that changed me I’m undone with love for You I’m undone with love for You
You are the Father Love rushing through Your veins Warm and devoted Tenderness filled with strength
And You heal to the bone Speak life to the soul And I’m swept away And I’m swept away
Closing Thoughts
Thinking about "Fountain (I Am Good)" after Hebrews 11, I thought a lot about Hebrews 12:1, and how it says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles."
This song proclaims, “This is living breathing proof/That I am chosen /Wanted/Loved by You.” The Bible tells us that we are surrounded by a "cloud of witnesses" who are the saints that have gone before us. They have shown us in scripture that you don't have to be perfect to be used by God.
Faith is credited to us as righteousness. Abraham is called a "friend of God" because of his faith. In faith, Abraham went out not knowing where he was going. Living in fear, worry, and anxiety is not God's plan for us.
His Word tells us to not fear or worry, but, instead, cast our cares on Him. God wants us to take our thoughts captive. He wants us to trust in Him. He has big plans for us. For me, the most encouraging part of this song is the message that I don't have to be perfect, but that God knows me and loves me just as I am. That is cause for celebration as we all have the freedom to be ourselves and know that He has great plans for us as His children.
The message throughout the album is to know that we don't have to be perfect; God made us the way we are for a reason. We're beautiful; we have something to say and we're worth it. Joy isn't just a happy emotion. It's also a deep peace and understanding, knowing that we are loved, without a shadow of a doubt.
"Fountain (I Am Good)" is a daily prayer asking God to come and change our hearts and change our lives in such a way that our behavior and the way we live flows from God living inside of us as believers. Only Jesus can give us our identity. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us. He is all we need.
God's grace washes us clean in the river of His Holy Spirit. We have become a new creation in Christ. As we look at the fallen world around us, we all need to lift our eyes up to God and put all our faith and hope in Him.
The picture of God's grace being poured out like water is a beautiful and biblical image of the water and the blood that poured out of our Savior Jesus Christ when He hung on the Cross to provide God's riches to us at His own expense. That's when His love washed over us.
The story of the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4 (NIV) makes me think about how excited she was to drop her bucket and to tell everyone in the town to come, see a man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?
Jesus knows everything about us, and His Spirit is the well of Living Water that never runs dry. Sing along wholeheartedly: “I am good/You say I’m good/I am worthy/Wanted/Loved by You.” Amen to that.
