By now, I'm sure that almost everyone in Christian music circles has heard of The Worshicken. In case you don't know, The Worshicken is a squeaky chicken that recently came out with a viral music video cover for "The Blessing" by Elevation Worship and Kari Jobe. (No, I'm not kidding.) The video quickly gained hundreds of thousands of views from people on various social media platforms, giving people some much-needed hope and laughter.
In addition to releasing a cover of "The Blessing," this legendary squeaky chicken also recently released a cover of the iconic worship song "Way Maker." I'll have to admit, when I first saw it, I was laughing hysterically.
In a direct assault to professional journalism, I got to cluck it up with the anonymous mastermind behind The Worshicken. We got to talk about the worship covers and what's next for the chicken.
Why did you decide to make these worship covers?
It started off as a funny idea. We were right in the middle of quarantine when the idea struck. At first, it was kind of a distraction from some of the hard situations and struggles.
But then it turned into this project where it was not only serving as a distraction for us, but it also served as a respite from the struggles for other people. It's become our motivation. When we first started, we totally did not think it was gonna take off the way it did. We thought it was going to be a bit more local to people we knew. But it's great!
Give us a bit of an inside look. What goes into making one of these covers? Does it take a lot of time?
There are three of us guys who work on this and we're all roommates. It's not a very formal, dedicated process. We just take bits and pieces of whatever free time we have.
We're all musicians, so we actually record all of the music that goes into the tracks for The Worshicken. There's some production time, and obviously we have to record the amazing vocals that our chicken can do. It's a little bit of work, but there's enough of us that it doesn't feel like we're doing a ton.
Who are your musical influences?
We're really loving what Elevation Worship is doing right now. Their new worship album is really good. Some of our other music influences are Bethel Music and Hillsong Worship. There's also this band called Isla Vista Worship, and they have some great stuff that we're considering covering a little bit later down the road.
Right now we're trying to focus on more popular contemporary worship, as far as future covers.
Does the chicken have an actual name, or is it just The Worshicken?
Yeah, he's just The Worshicken!
Were you surprised to see that your covers got so many views?
Oh, for sure. It was a huge surprise. The night before we posted the first cover, I was talking to the guys and I said, "If we get even 1,000 views anywhere, from YouTube or Instagram, or even from all of them combined, that's a win for me."
It was really surprising to see the response. It took off really, really quickly. We got thousands of views within 24 hours and it just kept growing. So we felt really blessed.
What's next for The Worshicken? Are you planning on releasing an album? I heard a rumor about that possibility.
It's in the works! I think right now we're kind of just focused on making a name for ourselves with putting out consistent content. But for sure, definitely down the line, we are considering putting an album together.
We've had a lot of great responses from kids. We've had so many parents reach out and say, "Hey, my kid really loves it. They're really engaged when 'The Blessing' by The Worshicken comes on." So we would possibly consider doing a kid's album. Maybe for children's ministries at churches to work with.
It sounds really cool, but we're not locked into anything as far as an album yet. It'll be in the works soon, we're looking into it.
Well, thanks for bringing us all some joy and laughs! Can't wait for what's next.
Thank you!
