Upcoming artist Connor Caughlan is a worship leader, producer, and songwriter, based in Los Angeles, California. He's an independent artist and producer with the goal to write and produce music full time to provide for his family. Connor was raised overseas as a missionary kid. And, he's led worship around the world. Connor met his wife in California in 2015 at a worship night at a California church. The two married in 2018. I have the opportunity to speak to Connor about himself, his music career, leading worship, and his new album, Hover.
Why write and perform Worship music?
Every believer is a worship leader, no matter their profession or craft. For me, personally, I've seen the power music has to transcend language and cultural barriers and I've watched the Lord move powerfully through songs. My goal isn't so much to see my songs on the charts but to create space for believers to sing their own song to Jesus. An opportunity to sing their testimony to God. I'm so inspired by the power a song has to strengthen hearts in the Lord. My prayer is that the songs I write inspire those who need the language to overcome their circumstances.
What are some of your creative influences?
I'll never forget the moment I first heard Will Reagan's songwriting on the United Pursuit Band's Live at the Banks House album. I was profoundly inspired by the simplicity of the production, and it got me to start leading in living rooms very early on. Bethel Music's Jonathan David and Melissa Helser's On the Shores album taught me how to write out of a place of breakthrough and faith, and Songs in Secret by Great Awakening is one of my favorite albums of all time. Outside of Christian music, I'm a huge fan of artists Jack Garratt and Sylvan Esso.
Tell us about your newest album, Hover.
My new album, Hover, is a seven-track worship project that explores our relationship with the hovering presence of the Lord. The title comes from Genesis 1:2 where it says the “spirit of the Lord was over the surface of the deep.” The Hebrew word used is rachaph, which means to be moved within or to flutter or shake: a cherishing love, butterflies in your stomach, and simultaneously the trembling before God in fear. It's linked to Elisha laying on the corpse of the boy who died in 2 Kings 4. I’m profoundly inspired and transformed by the truth that the spirit of the Lord is hovering over us with resurrection and creativity at every moment of the day. I hope that, in this unique season, the Lord uses this album to silence fear and worry, and voice the prayer of his people to breakthrough and shine into our lives.
What’s your favorite thing about leading worship?
There are moments between songs when you can hear the congregation erupt in worship from the stage. It's a mix of their own spontaneous songs, sporadic declarations of gratitude and praise, and prayer. And, for me, there's nothing more heavenly. The moment when a believer, for the first time, finds their voice and sings to the Lord is a powerful moment. And, I consider it a high honor to be part of such an intimate moment. That is my favorite thing about leading and producing worship.
Well, I certainly have made plans to continue producing worship music that I've written (I have a couple of singles in the works, one for the summer and the other for this coming Christmas season). But, I'm even more excited to begin producing music for my friends in Los Angeles who are recording worship music in all different languages.
How can we be praying for you?
Pray that the Lord uses this album to serve His purposes on the earth: that it would advance His kingdom and strengthen His people. Pray that it would inspire other artists and writers to partner with heaven, and would give fresh language to the everyday believer to praise God. If you pray for me, pray that the Lord blesses me and my family and my career. That He would be glorified in everything I put my hand to and would have His way with my life.
