Dave Williams and Brooke Hobbs, otherwise known as Fox & Foal, an Americana-style worship duo from Fayetteville, Arkansas, are singer/songwriters and worship leaders who’ve been playing together for five years. The duo first met, as well as began leading worship together, at the University of Arkansas Wesley College Ministry in Fall 2015. They have been leading worship together since then.
After the duo had a chance encounter with their producer at a songwriting conference in Nashville, they decided to form Fox & Foal and record the songs they had written. The duo hope their style of worship allows people to connect with God in a new and true way. I had a chance to connect with the duo about their live performances, their music, and their careers.
Why write and perform Christian music?
We’ve both been involved in worship ministry since our middle school days, so Christian music has always been a part of our lives. Once we surrendered to God’s call on our lives to lead others in worship, we discovered that He wanted us to use our gifts to help connect people with His presence. The people we’ve met and the opportunities we’ve had in such a short time has only been an affirmation to that call. We’re doing our best to be faithful to where He is leading us.
What are some of your creative influences?
This list could go on. But, I would say it’s people who are most honest and searching for more. In the Christian world, we draw influence from artists like All Sons & Daughters, Phil Wickham, John Mark McMillan, and Hillsong Church. In the mainstream world, our influences include Tom Petty, John Mayer, and Drew Holcomb.
Tell us about “What Other Love.”
This is the song that launched everything. We had written songs before, but this one really stood out to us. This is the song that caught the attention of our producer and brought us back to Nashville to record our debut EP. "What Other Love" is a relatively simple song that talks about the unending, incomparable love of God. It speaks to His beauty, grace, and mercy, while pointing to His sacrifice on the cross. 1 John tells us His sacrifice is how we know what love is. There is no other love that compares to the love of God.
What do you miss most about performing live?
The response from the crowd. There are energy and communication that just can’t be replicated through a live stream. The connection, the release, the response, and ultimately the surrender to Christ, are all things we can’t wait to get back when we can lead people in worship live again.
Tell us more about your upcoming EP.
We feel like the luckiest people in the world to get to work with such incredibly talented people on our first EP. It was produced by John J. Thompson and Stephen Leiweke at his studio in Nashville with Aaron Smith, Matt Stanfield, Chris Donohue, Matt Slocum and Steve Hindalong all lending their work to bring it to life.
The EP is a collection of five songs recorded over eight days in the fall. All the songs touch on the idea of surrender and, hopefully, provide reminders of God’s faithfulness and goodness--especially during these times of uncertainty. It’s called What Other Love and will be out this summer.
How can we be praying for you?
Pray that we still make time to commune with God. Personally, this isolation feels busy and overwhelming. It’s easy to put off time in prayer because we have all the time in the world. We can get caught up in the need to be productive and not wasteful, even when songwriting, and miss out on hearing God’s voice and following His will.
