Contemporary Christian rising star Aaron David led worship in the Central Florida area for over two decades (He started singing when he was eight). In early 2018, he decided to create Christian contemporary music for a living.
Stylistically speaking, Aaron compares himself to artists such as Sarah Reeves, Jordan Feliz, Tauren Wells, and David Dunn, to name a few. He says, "I love pop music. Specifically pop music that you can vibe to, with messages that are relatable and easy to connect with. Plus, there aren't many Hispanic male artists in Christian contemporary so I love to properly represent."
The 30-years-old artist met his wife, Marissa, while serving as youth group leaders at the couple's previous church. Aaron also has a 16-month-old boy, named Evan. I had the chance to get to know Aaron more in our one-on-one interview.
Why write and perform Christian music?
I personally wanted to contribute my gifting and talents to the pop genre within the Christian contemporary world. We have an amazing amount of worship bands, contemporary singers, and Christian hip-hop artists that are pushing the kingdom forward. But, I believe the alternative that I offer can contribute something different to the medium. And, more importantly, Christian music points people to Jesus. This world desperately needs to know their creator, and I wouldn’t want to use any other method to properly communicate that truth.
What are some of your creative influences?
Personally, I love artists who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable and connect with their listeners. Sarah Reeves has had a huge impact on my approach to writing. She’s willing to talk about her struggles, admit her weaknesses, and be honest about her feelings. Stylistically, I also love Tauren Wells. His energy, his vocal talents, and the effort he puts behind his live performances is something I’ve always appreciated, and hope to one day implement in my shows. The boy is just bad, in a good way. Other notable mentions go to Andy Mineo, GAWVI, Jordan Feliz, David Dunn, and Phil Wickham.
Tell us about your latest single, “Dirty Heart.”
Jeremiah 17:9 says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" Culture tells us we should follow our hearts; you hear this message in speeches, movies, and even on the pulpit. But, in my life, I made a lot of decisions that I thought would bring me a sense of satisfaction, only later to find out, those desires came from a dark place. The truth is, what I want in this life isn’t what’s always best for me.
The purpose of "Dirty Heart" isn’t to imply that we're only made up of our sinful nature, but to remind us that sometimes we can be corrupted by it. I found myself dealing with such internal battles and struggles. As a result, this honest evaluation of my heart turned this song into a prayer, a prayer that asks God to replace that which my heart desires solely with him.
What’s next?
Sporadically throughout the year, I’ll be releasing new music every quarter, along with my series Method Behind the Madness, which are short videos explaining the meaning behind each upcoming song. My new single, "Say The Word," was released in April. I also plan to release a few music videos, and maybe a Christmas EP later in the year.
How can we be praying for you?
I would ask that you pray that God gives me strength. At the moment, music is part-time, and with this COVID-19 pandemic, my wife hasn’t been able to work. By God's grace, I’m still employed at my day job. But, I have to step up work over 80 hours a week in order to provide for my family. Again no complaints here, but I’d appreciate the ask.
In a practical sense, if you could also pray that God provides me with guidance and direction on whether to pursue getting signed to a label or remain independent. I’m at crossroads in regard to which path to take for me and my family. Thank you.
