Everyday life is being threatened and changed by the hour. Amusement parks are closing. Schools are suspending campus classes. Sports seasons are ending. People are hoarding toilet paper, water and cleaning supplies. The coronavirus has been making news headlines day after day with each passing hour bringing walls closer towards an ever-increasing reality that life as we know it may stop temporarily. And that has us all on edge.
Fear. Fear is the reason why so many places are closing, sports seasons are being suspended, and why everyone is stocking up on essentials. The world is gripped by fear right now as uncertainly lingers in all corners related to this global pandemic. It can certainly feel like the entire world has no peace and there's no safe place we can run to. Naturally, seeing everyone in a state of panic leads to a good question: "Should I be freaking out too?"
The answer to that question is no. No, we don't need to be freaking out.
It sounds like a pretty bold statement given the current climate. But as Christians, as we live in this world that's so full of darkness and fear, we need to look different. We need to be the ones that have peace. The ones people can go to if they have questions. The ones that look completely different from everyone else. Many of my brothers and sisters are currently looking like the rest of the world. I'm seeing them dominated by fear and grief, acting like hope is quickly disappearing. And I get it. The coronavirus that's going around is serious, the fact is the large majority of people who conceive the virus has a full and healthy recovery.
So, have hope and fight hard to tell a different story than what fear and uncertainty are breeding all around us. Right now in this crazy world, I feel like we all need a minute to just breathe. We need a minute to clear out the negative voices around us. If you need that, take it. Turn off the news. Clear your mind. Open scripture, turn on a Christian music playlist (we have a few here) and take a minute to breathe. A minute to remember that this too, shall pass.
I've been through lots of ups and downs in my life. I've walked beside loved ones as they struggle with health issues, walked through trials in ministry, and every single time I've seen God come through. This coronavirus will be no different. It's going to pass, and God is going to overcome.
If you're struggling with anxiety right now surrounding this virus, I welcome you to join our closed Facebook group, NRT Christian Music Fandom and post here so our small group can surround you in prayer. Satan would like nothing more than isolation and hunkering down. Let's be smart, safe and vigilant in our belief that God has something more out there for us all.
1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."
Isaiah 41:10 (NIV)
"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV)
"I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?"
