Some Christian music fans say much of today's songs and albums sound the same. However, up and comers Novaland want to be standouts, different from other Christian artists and bands.
Novaland focuses on fun. A recent press release described them as, "Anything but ordinary. They are the most energetic, positive, hilarious group of guys to hit the music scene in a while." It continued, "What makes [Novaland] special as individuals and as a whole is that their sole purpose is to bring a message of hope and love through the belief that dreams really do come to life."
"It's not the music that makes us different," Novaland explained to me, "but, the experience behind each song."
Novaland is composed of four members from El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Nate on drums; David on lead guitar; and founding brothers Kiki Garcia on keys and vocals, and Richard Garcia, who does lead vocals. The Garcia brothers grew up in a Christian home, with a father who was addicted to drugs. But, despite coming from a broken home, the brothers persevered, letting their faith in God light the way. Their journey led them to form Novaland in 2010.
I liked how the Garcias described their positive outlook on their negative circumstances in their song, "God of Redemption" found on their debut album, Light My Way. "No matter our past/You make us new/We won't look back/We'll look to you."
I kicked some questions to this "anything but ordinary" and "hilarious" group of guys to find out more about them, their music, and Light My Way.
What does the name, "Novaland," mean?
Novaland means 'New Land.' Isaiah 43:18 talks about forgetting your past and going into a new season. We have all been through tough times in our lives–maybe a sickness, financial struggles, drug addiction, domestic violence, you name it. But, we believe God has a place, NovaLand, where we can find comfort, hope, faith, and love.
How do you approach your songwriting?
We usually have an idea: maybe a groovy melody or a word stuck in our head that needs to come out. We start adding personal experiences to what we've already created or what is in process.
What's the story behind your new album, Light My Way?
Light My Way was inspired by a worship leader who struggled many years with drug addiction. Each song describes what he and his family went through and how they overcame each struggle. We're sharing these songs because we believe there are other people going through the same or similar situations. And we pray that through these songs, they can find a message of hope and restoration.
How would you describe the music on your debut album? What singles have you released so far?
Our music is a mix of pop, rock and contemporary worship. We recently released our single and music video for our song, "Light My Way."
What are some of your favorite artists and music that you listen to and why?
One Republic, Bruno Mars, and TobyMac. We like the style, grooviness, and creativity they bring to each song. We feed off on that. And it inspires us in our songwriting and music production.
What's next? How can we be praying for you?
Our goal is to start touring full time and to get this album to as many ears as possible. We would love for you to help us pray that God does his will with this album. We also want to take this opportunity to ask you to pray for our personal lives. And for our father who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. We believe in the power of prayer.
