More than ever before, bands, artists and worship groups in the Christian music industry are reaching out to teenagers with music. Some groups, such as planetboom, focus mainly on reaching young people. planetboom is the multi-cultural youth ministry of Planetshakers Church.
The band itself is comprised of young musicians, songwriters and vocalists. In their words, "[The planetboom youth] ministry exists to see young people empowered to win their generation." I had the opportunity to speak with one of planetboom's singers, Aimee Evans.
Who is planetboom? Tell us more about yourselves, your music and your role at Planetshakers Church.
My name is Aimee. I'm one of the singers in the planetboom band. I'm also a leader on Friday nights at planetboom Youth. At Planetshakers Church, I help run all of our social media accounts. Planetboom is the youth band that has come out of Planetshakers Church.
What makes planetboom's music different than other youth ministries, such as Hillsong Young and Free, releasing music and going on tours?
Planetboom is all about declaring the word of God to teenagers by relating to them with the sound of our music. We want teenagers to experience the power of God. And, as we provide songs of the day, it's easier for them to relate to it. It also makes it easier for them to open their hearts to God and experience the true love of Jesus Christ.
Talk about the success of your recently released album, Jesus Over Everything. What is the album's overall theme? What are some of the songs about?
Jesus Over Everything is exactly what the title is. As the next generation declares Jesus over everything in their lives, they'll know that Jesus is always there for them. "Lemme Tellya" is a great declaration of who God is. He is the King of Kings, He is the Lord of Lords. And, there is no one in this world that is like him. It is also a great song to sing over everything we face. "I Belong" is another one of our worship songs that talk about belonging to Jesus. We want for young people of this next generation to know that they can belong to God as they sometimes find themselves feeling like they don't belong in anywhere. But, now when they listen to this song, they can know that they belong to Jesus Christ–no matter what they have been through.
Planetboom's material moves beyond worship music and delves into serious societal issues, faced by today's youth: temptation, social media bullying, and others. Talk specifically about the messages you are trying to deliver in your music.
I believe one touch from Jesus is all we need to change everything. As we show the world the true love of Jesus, we want teenagers to know that no matter what we face, we can run to Jesus. Songs like "Jesus Over Everything" are written to show people who Jesus is and what he can do. In 1 Peter 3:22, it says that Jesus has the last word on everything and everyone, from angels to armies. He's standing right alongside God, and what he says goes. We want teenagers to know that Jesus, the son of God, has the last say. And, what he says in his Word is that he will never leave, he is our strength, he turns everything around for good, he is our healer, and he is our provider. We want people to know that Jesus is the one we can rely on through anything we face.
Which worship artists would you like to collaborate with in the future?
I honestly don't have anyone specifically. But, we love songs that are produced in excellence and sounding good and also anointed. So, anyone with the same passion.
What advice do you have for youth ministries hoping to explore worship music, go on tours and release albums?
As God speaks to us about what he wants us to do in our music and in our youth group, it is so powerful. Listening to the call of God and being obedient to what he wants us to do, he will command a blessing. I think if you are wanting to do an album, just seek after him and he will give you the revelation.
What are you working on right now? What's next?
We have a couple of new songs planned. but you will have to wait and see what comes next.
How can we be praying for you?
We think prayer is powerful. And, just praying that when people listen to our songs, they experience the power and presence of God.
