Paul: For rock heads, it's been a good year. The two rock categories are proof of that. Skillet's band members have embarked on their own little side projects: Jen Ledger with her self-titled EP and John Cooper's Fight for Fury. P.O.D.'s return to the rock scene. The Protest leaving a mark on the Christian rock scene with the awesome song, "What Else You Got?". And, let's not forget the dream combination of Fireflight with Disciple's Kevin Young ("Die Free"). Then, we have new blood, Zahna. What's unfortunate is that radio is phasing out our serious rock talent for worship music–the current "in-genre." Be that as it may, the We Love Awards is here to give credit where credit is due.
For rock song of the year, Fight the Fury goes head to head with Ledger. Of the two, Ledger has the edge. Her talents shine in her EP, while Cooper goes a little overboard with "My Demons." Instead of relying strictly on intensifying guitars, he should have let his vocals do a little more singing than screaming. Memphis May Fire does the same thing on "This Old Me." To me, the match is between Ledger's "Not Dead Yet," Fireflight's "Die Free," and The Protest's "What Else You Got?" I think Ledger has this one–strictly by popular demand.
The stakes are higher for The Amp Award. First and foremost, P.O.D. emerges with their tried and true formula, on Circles. Zahna gives us her best Evanescence impression on Red For War. The Protest and LEDGER try to shake up rock with their fresh offerings. LEDGER is the safest best, with her self-titled EP. The Protest would be a close second, with Legacy.
Amanda: There are a lot of amazing rock options this year! Ledger is up for possible awards in at least four different categories this year and she absolutely deserves it. Ledger, Fireflight, and Zahna all bring a female powerhouse presence to the rock categories for 2018 that is absolutely empowering.
Paul: Good point. More often than not, female rockers don't get the accolades they deserve. But, as you pointed out, female rockers are making their presence known. At any rate, I believe Zahna and LEDGER are among the first female rockers that'll show up in the future. What I also notice on the nom list is the lack of "electro rock." Instead, I see noms who belt out good ol' fashioned rock n' roll. What do you think of this, Amanda?
Amanda: I agree. As much as I enjoy some good electronic-based rock, it's refreshing just to have some pure, old-fashioned rock in the nominations. Guitar-shredding, solid beats, and powerful vocals. John Cooper's (Fight the Fury) "My Demons" actually reminds me of some of the original Skillet music from the 90's, albeit much more modern and polished. It's amazing to see some classic rock bands both reinventing themselves, and staying true to the core of rock that got them started in their careers.
Paul: Skillet has done very well to 'reinvent' themselves over the years. I think John Cooper did the Fight for Fury project, based on popular demand. Two noms in one category prove that Skillet has the ability to juggle different genres at once. Albeit, Unleashed didn't showcase Skillet's best efforts. Fight for Fury and Ledger's debut EP more than makes up for it. It'll be interesting to see how these two projects impact Skillet's next album. Who knows? Maybe we'll be right here next year, reviewing a cutting edge Skillet song. I wonder if there will ever be a time where we're tired of listening to Skillet music?
Amanda: I doubt it! Skillet has managed to stay relevant to their audience for several decades. I can't see them going out of style anytime soon.
Paul: Kevin Young is another artist who always makes waves. I predict a song from him and Disciple in this category next year, as well. As for Fireflight, enough of the suspense already. Give us a new album. The noms for next year are putting together themselves. I want to see Zahna as the 'next big thing.' She has potential. Expect big things from her.
Amanda: Zahna is one of those artists who isn't new to the music industry but has made a big impression as a new solo artist, and she is literally rocking it. I can't wait to see where this solo career takes her. Come to think of it, a Fireflight/Zahna mashup would be absolutely epic.
One thing is for sure, no matter who wins this year, new name or old favorite, fans have an amazing lineup to choose from!
