New Integrity Music worship artist Alisa Turner has suffered with the debilitating illness, Lyme disease, since childhood. Also, according to her biography, she was only 20 years old when she lost her father. She had recently left her North Carolina home to pursue a music career in Nashville when she got the call that her father, a worship pastor, had passed away, following a massive heart attack.

Undone by his death and the effects of her Lyme disease, Alisa soon returned home as her health worsened. Unable to eat or even hold up her head due to muscle atrophy, she was hospitalized and placed on a feeding tube, remaining bedridden for six years.
Music has always been Alisa's connection point with God. She recently released her full-length debut album Miracle or Not, which features "My Prayer for You," "Safe" and "Miracles." Her songs are based on her experiences of loss and grief, as well as her hope in Christ.

Turner shares, "My life and my story are messy; there are days when all I can do is keep lifting up my hands in desperation and in worship. I know the hard parts of life well and I can see and sense when someone else is going through it. The best way I know to lead is by example. So, I just worship. That's all I know to do."

I had the chance to speak with Alisa about "Only My Jesus," which features Leslie Jordan, from All Sons & Daughters.

Please tell me the personal story behind the song.

Last fall, Leslie Jordan, Michael Farren and I got together at a songwriting retreat with Integrity (our record label) artists to write songs. I never had the chance to write with Leslie before. But, the cool thing is that we've been friends ever since.

For "Only My Jesus," Leslie played the melody, while we all contributed lyrics. It was very easy to come up with the song's content and message. We wanted the Holy Spirit to lead us as we wrote the song. I never want to write a song unless it talks with and about the Lord. It has to praise Him and encourage others. Musically, we chose a hymn-like direction.

We first wrote the chorus. There were a few different directions we could take. Ultimately, we ended up with, "I will sing/I will sing/I will sing of His steadfast love/I will sing/I will sing of only my Jesus." It was a sweet moment. All three of us are on different journeys and the chorus related to that.

Many people know my story. And, Leslie has walked through an adoption in her family. We need a constant reminder that we only need Jesus. He is the One who is always worthy of our praise--even through tough times. That's what this song is about.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Psalm 16:1-3 (NLV): "Keep me, O God, for I am safe in You. I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord. All the good things I have come from You." As for those in the land who belong to You, they are the great ones in whom is all my joy."
Psalm 46:1 (NIV): "The Lord is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble."

Philippians 2:11 (VOICE): "And every tongue will confess "Jesus, the Anointed One, is Lord," to the glory of God our Father!"
Psalm 63:4 (VOICE): "I will bless You with every breath of my life; I will lift up my hands in praise to Your name."

Psalm 13:5-6 (MSG): "I've thrown myself headlong into Your arms—I'm celebrating Your rescue. I'm singing at the top of my lungs, I'm so full of answered prayers."

Matthew 6:33-34 (NKJV): "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV): "Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

What is the takeaway message?

Jesus is constantly there for us, and His love is steadfast. His love is always there and it's always overflowing. We wanted that truth to stand out in "Only My Jesus." Psalm 16:1-3 really walked us through some of our lyric writing. "All of the good things I have come from You" helped guide the way in finishing this song.

"Only My Jesus" includes some sweet reminders for everyone that not only is He the One worthy of our praise, but that He wants to walk beside us--no matter what we're going through. We forget that sometimes. When we look up in the sky, we know He's up in Heaven. But, we need to remember how close and how intimate He is with us as well.

He's right beside you. He's the One you can always go to. When the days are difficult, He's right there. In those moments, always give Him praise. Trust that He's with you, and He has the best for you. He's worthy, worthy, worthy of our praise.

With whom shall I walk through these troubles
With whom shall I stand in the dark
Oh let it be only my Jesus
And only the strength in His arms

With whom shall I face my tomorrows
With whom shall I conquer my fears
Oh let it be only my Jesus
Who will not abandon me here

I will sing
I will sing
I will sing of His steadfast love
I will sing
I will sing of only my Jesus

To whom shall the glory be given
To whom shall the whole of earth bow
Oh it will be only my Jesus
Worthy to wear every crown

Of whom shall I sing in the twilight
As my earthly breath starts to fade
Oh let it be only my Jesus
Still on my tongue be His praise
Still on my tongue be His praise
Still on my tongue be His praise

Closing Thoughts

"Only My Jesus" is a great song that stirs my heart and increases my convictions to grow closer to God during my worship and devotional time. This song is all about trusting in God and confessing to Him and others when you fail or have struggles. Lay those at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from that burden. God wants to hear from you.

This song is a reminder to have resolve and "sing of His steadfast love" as a follower of Jesus, remembering to keep eyes wide open, find ways to serve Him, and run and not grow weary.

All we need is faith and God will show us what He has planned for us. He's the author of our lives and knows what's best for us, much better than we do. I can't get enough of Alisa's sincere vocals and catchy, worshipful songs.
Alisa's music ministry has blessed me in her ability to lead songs for the church in very singable styles, thus putting these biblical words of awe and reverence of our King of Kings and Lord of Lords into the minds, mouths and hearts of believers.

The truth of this piece is great to share in almost a sermon-like style as it declares over and over again that the only answer to the questions raised is "Only My Jesus." Followers can sing every word and agree with the beautiful sentiments of this great tune.
I was immediately hooked by the emotional and prayerful tone of this song. "Only My Jesus" is a sincere offering of praise back to the Lord and to express our desire to seek His face, feel His peace and hear His voice. Jesus loves us so much; He came down and took our punishment so that we can be with Him forever. He wants to give us life and never let us go. That's something worth singing about.

No matter what you are going through; if you're looking for the words to pray to God, join Alisa in singing "Of whom shall I sing in the twilight/As my earthly breath starts to fade/Oh, let it be only my Jesus." Amen to that.
