Manafest sits down with NRT's Jake Frederick at Uprising Festival in Casper, WY for a quick conversation about where he's at and where his music is going.
I recently had the opportunity to represent NewReleaseToday at the Uprising Festival in Casper, WY, a two-day festival featuring multiple headlining artists. One of those was Manafest who is preparing his upcoming September release, Stones Reloaded. I got some time with him before his set to catch up and talk about what's next.
Over your career, you've worked with a number of different styles in your music, from traditional hip-hop beats to pop crossover to rock. What style do you feel most at home with?
I would have to say rock. It took me a while to get comfortable singing. Now that I'm comfortable, I love to rock.
How does God influence you in the writing process?
Sometimes he speaks to me in church, sometimes it's through a book. Prayer is definitely a priority. Before I sit down to write, I pray "God, speak through me. Tell me what someone needs to hear from you." One other important aspect to songwriting is sharing stories. It's about telling a story about pushing through and never getting pushed over.
Does being an independent artist make it easier to release new music once the songs are written?
It's definitely straightforward to release new music. It's just a matter of funding and time. I've been independent since 2010 except in the US. I became independent in 2015 in the US.
When I think of Manafest, the songs "Avalanche" and "Everytime You Run" come to mind. What is your most accomplished song? What is your most understated song?
"Impossible" blew up in Japan first and then blew up in the states. "Avalanche" was the song that blew up in the United States. "Every Time You Run" blew up in Canada. My most understated song is "Pray" from the Reborn album. I really worked to make that song happen.
What's coming up for you that you're excited to share with us?
I've got the Stones Reloaded album dropping on September 21, 2018. I'm also wanting to make a music video for "Firestarter." Also, this Qdoba dinner that's about to happen in catering!
