Florida based artist Roy Tosh returned this past April after a three-year break with Above The Water. Tosh continues in his melodic hip-hop ways with a ten track album released on the Reflection Music Group (Derek Minor, Deraj, Tony Tillman) imprint, RMG Amplify.
Above the Water is inspired by a difficult previous year where Tosh almost lost his father. Through this trial and emotional roller coaster, Tosh and his family had the opportunity to live out the Biblical narrative of Peter walking on the water towards Jesus (Matthew 14:22-33). The outcome reminded Tosh to keep everything in perspective during life's fiercest storms.
Roy took a few minutes to share his thoughts from each track on the new album.
"Never 2 Late"
After almost losing my dad, the reality of not being promised tomorrow hit me hard. This challenged me to make the most of the time I have today, and give everything I got to what God has called me to.
"Real One’s"
If it weren’t for the “real ones” in my life, I would not be the man I am today. This song is dedicated to the many people who have faithfully had my back through the ebb and flow of life.
"What A Year"
While it is a blessing to go on tour, this song highlights the hardships involved to give a realistic perspective of life on the road.
"Above The Water"
When the waters of life rise around me, at times it feels like I’m going to drown. If I focus on my circumstances and lose sight of eternity, I start to sink. The only way to rise above the waters is to fix all my hope on Jesus. No matter what I face, He lifts me above the waters so that I’m able to continue to walk by faith.
"Underdog" ft. Aaron Cole
Throughout history, the church has faced many “underdog” type events. However, in the end, we will rise. The hook and first verse were inspired by “the rumble in the jungle” boxing match where Muhammad Ali faced George Foreman. Ali was considered the underdog, yet came out victorious.
"TYL"
I was told my dad would not make it five times, but by the grace of God, he’s still alive. The only hope my family had during those dark nights was that God was with us, offering comfort and peace for every moment.
"Day 1" ft. J. Paul
My wife’s been supportive from day one, and I have no idea what I’d do without her! This song is dedicated to the woman who holds my heart.
"Rise" ft. Blake Whiteley & Sky
Chasing your dreams is a fight filled with ups and downs. Always remember to check the motivations of your heart to make sure you are chasing after what really matters; living to and for the glory of God.
"First Love" ft. Brianna Caprice
This song was inspired by a young woman who faced many hardships from abusive relationships. By the end of the song, she finally realizes that no man can offer her what Jesus freely gives: unconditional love.
"Stronger"
This song was inspired by the many people suffering around the world, including some of my closest friends. When we look to God to find hope, we find He is ever-present enabling us to press on!
