My family and I lived in Delray Beach, Florida for a little over a year, and there my perspective on freedom changed completely. Delray is the recovery capital of the world, which means a major piece of the population of this town were alcoholics, drug addicts and people desperately trying to get sober. In the midst of all this I met some of the most liberated and free people I have ever met in my life!
I found it so refreshing to be surrounded by people who were there because they knew that had a problem they couldn't fix on their own. But don't we all? I began to relate more and more with people with addictions as I finally realized I was a part of this recovery community.
I've never been addicted to drugs or alcohol, but I have been addicted to my sin. I was born a sinner, completely separated from God. And just like step one in recovery I had to admit I needed help. I needed a savior. I needed Jesus.
In Delray, I met drug addicts who had been set free and are now counselors with full time jobs. I met homeless men who had lost their families but through giving their life to Jesus, their families are now being restored. What I witnessed was the power of the Gospel changing lives forever, and they couldn't help but tell the story. Their testimony became a hymn they proclaimed everywhere they went. I was lost, and now I'm found.
The inspiration for my single "Freedom Hymn" was to write a song for the recovery community. I believe the church is the biggest recovery community in the world. After all we are messed up, hopeless, and desperate until we meet the amazing grace of Jesus Christ. And through him, no matter how addicted you may be you can be set free by the blood of Jesus. For whoever the Son sets free, is free indeed. I believe that's worth singing about. It's about sharing what God has done. The sound of chains breaking, the beat of your heart changing, and the new song of a soul forgiven is the soundtrack to our new life in Jesus. This is my "Freedom Hymn."
Austin French was first introduced to a broader audience through the show Rising Star. Now the singer and worship leader is preparing to release his debut album with Fair Trade Services in Nashville, Tenn, where he lives with his wife and two sons.
