Miracles, the eighth studio album by pop-rock mainstays Hawk Nelson was one that came after a season of a lot of growth--both from hardship and emerging passions. With the project's 10 songs, the band is showing not just new dimensions of their ever-developing sound, but glimpses of the life they've lived and lessons they're learning.
Bassist and founding Hawk Nelson member Dan Biro gives his quick takes on each of the songs from Miracles, complete with some behind-the-scenes info as well as inspirational insight.
"No Such Thing"
We had the opportunity to tour this spring alongside Sarah Reeves and Colton Dixon. When trying to figure out which song to open with, this tune felt like a natural. Opening tracks for albums can be a tricky thing, thankfully in this case, it was "No Such Thing." (Get it?)
"He Still Does (Miracles)"
This song was birthed in Sweden with writers/producers Johan and Oliver. The song continued to grow with the help of Jason Ingram, but to seal the deal, Micah Kuiper--our guitarist--finished it with production. You could say this song actually was a Miracle!
"Parachute"
Technically, this song had a completely different version that we played live a few times a year and a half ago. You may be able to find a video out there on YouTube. Regardless, I'm guessing this song will impact a ton of people if and when it goes to radio.
"Weightless"
I can't believe how many people are digging this song! The comments online have been inspiring. I think it's my wife's favorite song on the album. Jon wrote it with the Afters' drummer Jordan, who also co-wrote "Just Getting Started" together on our last album.
"Never Let You Down"
Micah's baby. That's what we call this one. He co-wrote this with Jon, but he fully produced this JAM. Definitely one of the best songs live that Hawk has ever had. Also Micah's sister Tara, of Hunter & Tara, guest appeared on the song. Very cool stuff; must run in the family.
"Right Here With You"
Can I say just how much I love this song? Anything produced by Kyle Lee is straight gold to my ears. Leeland, Smitty, and now this tune for Hawk. This song will take you on a sonic journey and MDSN crushes the vocals. My personal fav from the album.
"Never Runs Dry"
If there had to be one song on the album that I'd potentially skip, it would be this song. (How's that for honesty?)
"Crooked Lines"
This song was originally going to be cut by our buddy Dan Bremnes. I think he wrote it with Matt Maher. Jon took it to a new place that is great--but cause we love Dan Bremnes so much in Camp Hawk, it's cool to have a part of him with us always.
"Close"
A harmony-stacked pleasure. Can't wait till we start playing this one live this summer.
"I'd Never Know"
I think this a great album closer. It's got a raw type of honesty to it. It reminds me that there's a point to everything that I go through, especially the hard stuff in life.
