It's one thing to interview an emerging artist to learn what they're all about. It's a completely different thing when you ask the artist's peers about their impressions. Ty Brasel is the latest signee to IVAV ("Four Against Five")--Word Label Group's hip-hop imprint--but he's not new to the rap game by any means.
Hot on the heels of Brasel's just-released Destined For Greatness EP, we asked a number of colleagues in Christian rap to tell us what we need to know about Ty Brasel.
"Ty brings a refreshing unique sound with his art. His story bring the foundation and crazy lit tone makes it enjoyable to listen to. The records are super transparent and this is definitely a classic. This is only the beginning."
"Ty has developed imagery in his music that's rarely seen in the current era. The listener feels like they're right there with him.growing up with him, going through trials with him, experiencing darkness and light with him. And he never has to sacrifice style for substance. I think it's what sets him apart."
"Ty has one of the most unique deliveries in the game right now. From timing to rhyme schemes, he always finds a way to do something unexpected, and in a way I don't think anyone else could pull off."
"I don't know him personally, but from what I listen to, you're gonna get really authentic hip hop when you play his music. He has a great feel for melodies and does it all with the perspective of someone who has really experienced the ups and downs in life, it's dope."
"I don't know Ty Brasel personally but his music is really dope. He's found a sound that separates him both in secular and Christian music. That's rare. I look forward to seeing the progression."
"Ty is definitely somebody who I've admired from afar. His passion for Jesus and commitment to excellence leaks through his art. He is without a shadow of a doubt the undisputed leader of the new school."
"Well... I don't know if my input would even be considered valid, because truthfully, I just recently started vibin' with his music, but I think even that says a lot about his craft. ... With his recent releases, like 'Praying Hands' and 'Phoenix in Exile,' he's really made a fan out of me. I've listened to his newest project, 'Destined For Greatness,' and it blew me away. Definitely an artist who I'm gonna continue to check out and support."
"I appreciate Ty for bringing culture changing music without ever compromising the Gospel. His music always has a fresh new twist unlike any other artist I know, and his drive for making Jesus known through that music is motivating."
"Ty is a genuine dude who doesn't hide behind a veil and acts self-righteous; he struggles like all of us and has put that in his music to encourage all of us. His music is new wave style, but he can REALLY rap. I'm a fan."
"Ty brings much-needed soul into Christian hip-hop. He has a unique style that put me off at first but the creativity and ingenuity have grown on me since and I feel is refreshing in a genre where a lot of artists sound the same. His music is truly ministry and art combined."
