After several highly regarded pop releases by Manic Drive, including the standout songs "Music," "Walls," "Halo," "Good Times," "Epic" and "VIP," the band has refined their sound to an even broader pop appeal, returning with one of my favorite albums of last year: Into the Wild.  The exciting music and hopeful message found in the Manic Drive single "Easier" mesh seamlessly.

Fans of rock, pop and EDM will enjoy this band's sound, which is infectious and approachable. "Easier" has quickly become one of my most played and favorite songs of the past year. If you like the pop-rock sensibilities of the latest releases from Hawk Nelson ("Drops in the Ocean" and "Diamonds"), Nine Lashes ("Galaxy") and Satellites & Sirens ("Tanks"), then you'll love this new record from Manic Drive. I had the chance to speak with Shawn and Michael Cavallo about "Easier."

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.

Shawn: We just released our new record Into the Wild. Our goal as artists, between my brother and myself, is to be transparent, authentic and honest with ourselves and in the messages of our songs. Throughout the two years we were writing songs for this album, there was some stress and anxiety in writing and some of the subjects we were talking about. Just putting your heart out there for everybody to see can be extremely stressful. I was feeling a lot of pressure being the primary songwriter, and some of your greatest fears of being rejected, not accepted and offending people were weighing on me.

I was going through all of that, and I decided I should write a song about how I was feeling. The only words coming out of my mouth at that moment was "it doesn't get easier." It seemed like there was always another mountain to climb. I was feeling exhausted and alone. I was murmuring those words, and I wrote a song that night.

I showed the song to my wife, but she told me I wasn't finished with the song yet. I was a little discouraged, but she told me that Christ has given me strength for moments like these, and that resonated with me. I finally put it all together. Life doesn't get easier and opportunities don't just get handed to us. Even as Christians, there are struggles. In moments like that, we need to ask for God's strength.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

John 16:33 (NIV): "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Jeremiah 33:3 (VOICE): "Call to Me, and I will answer you. I will tell you of great things, things beyond what you can imagine, things you could never have known."

Psalm 40:17 (VOICE): "Meanwhile, I am empty and need so much, but I know the Lord is thinking of me. You are my help; only You can save me, my True God. Please hurry."

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

2 Peter 3:9 (NIV): "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

Psalm 22:24 (NIV): "For He has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; He has not hidden His face from him but has listened to his cry for help."

Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV): "Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

Galatians 1:10 (NIV): "Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ."

What is the takeaway message?

Shawn: "Easier" is a call for all of us to realize that growing stronger in our faith isn't easy. However, the struggle is always a worthy endeavor. Philippians 4:13 says "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." That was such a powerful message to me. I had to throw my heart out there, and it has resonated with a lot of people.

I truly believe that God gives us strength for these difficult times. I know it's true because I've been there. We hope this song reminds you to turn to Jesus for strength every day as you face challenges and battles in your relationships, work, parenting and ministry. He is the one who will help you as He has helped me. It never gets easier, but we can grow stronger as we learn to rely on Jesus for all we need. Galatians 1:10 is a huge message for me and as a Christian musician. What is our purpose and passion? As much as we love your website and your readers, we are not trying to please man, but God. We just want to be authentic.

Michael: Hebrews 12:1 has been a great reminder for me with this song. In life more than ever, we get entangled, and we stumble and face these mountains to climb. We have been given strength through Christ to overcome those obstacles, and we are encouraged by that. We don't want our songs to be about what people want to hear, but what they need to hear. That's the direction we are going with this song and album.

Every single step
The further I get doesn't seem to get easier
It doesn't seem to get easier
I'm running out of breath
But You wouldn't give me strength if it's meant to get easier
If it's meant to get easier

So help me I'm asking please
There's gotta be another remedy
I'm running out of my options
I'm running out of my options so
So show me how to get
How to get
Don't expect it to get easier
Not until You make me stronger

No it doesn't get easier
So show me how to get
How to get
Don't expect it to get easier
Not until You make me stronger

Makeshift happiness
Mistaken being blessed with artificial exteriors
Fabricated with smoke and mirrors
We can never reach new heights
Without obstacles to climb
No, getting there isn't effortless
I'm gonna need a hand with this

So help me I'm asking please
There's gotta be another remedy
I'm running out of my options
I'm running out of my options so
So show me how to get
How to get
Don't expect it to get easier
Not until You make me stronger

No it doesn't get easier
So show me how to get
How to get
Don't expect it to get easier
Not until You make me stronger

I'm gonna break through even if it hurts
Don't want no medication it just makes it worse
Cause if I'm numb to the freedom
I'll never come through if I'm comfortable
No I'll never leave this room

No it doesn't get easier
No it doesn't get easier

So show me how to get
How to get
Don't expect it to get easier
Not until You make me stronger

There is a lot of infectious energy in these great new songs, including the standout tracks "Mic Drop," "Ceiling," "Into the Wild" and "Easier." Joy isn't just a happy emotion. It is also a deep peace and understanding, knowing that we are loved without a shadow of a doubt. We should not be ashamed to sing of our dependence on God and to show Him reverence. We are not at the end of our story. God's still writing our stories of redemption. God wants us to know that He's faithful to complete what's He's started in all of us who've put all of our hope and trust in Jesus for our salvation. "Easier" has really been resonating with me as I realize that Jesus commands us to trust God completely no matter our circumstances or personal distractions or concerns.

God wants to hear from you. Get to that place where you are in humble submission to God. Don't play it safe, but take a chance and ask for God to be real in your life. You'll never see true beauty if you don't fully submit to God. More than just intellectual assent, God wants to be at the center of our heart's desires. We change our minds quickly, but our hearts are more devoted. God can do immeasurably more than anything and everything one can ask or even imagine, and this song is a true celebration of the great biblical truth of "Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us" from Ephesians 3:20.

The lyrics of "Easier" challenge me to think about the truth of this song: "I'm running out of breath, but You wouldn't give me strength if it's meant to get easier." As we praise God for sending His Son Jesus, we also need to think about what we are doing for His Kingdom. God wants us to boldly approach the Throne of mercy and grace. The song is based on Philippians 4:13 and is an uplifting, catchy and encouraging song. This song reminds us to slow down, think about what really matters and dedicate your life to Him. This has been one of my most played songs this past year, and I love the lyrics "Don't expect it to get easier, not until You make me stronger." Amen to that!
