It's no secret that there's one drug even the most devout Christians can't resist: caffeine. Coffee is a ubiquitous presence in our churches, our social gatherings, and our early morning commutes. This is a reality that Christian musicians have not only recognized, but celebrated.
As we celebrate National Coffee Day, we thought we'd make sure that we've covered all the bases for having a fully caffeinated experience, brought to you by your favorite Christian musicians.
Caffeinated Comedy
Laughter is a good accompaniment to the energizing influences of your morning cup of joe. Tim Lovelace's brand new comedy album and accompanying DVD Living in a Coffee World instantly recognizes the caffeine obsession in which we live with its title. The project features Tim musing on a woe many of us are all too familiar with: coffee's toll on our budget.
The Caffeinated Soundtrack John Waller is an artist who gets it: coffee and music have to go hand-in-hand to truly wake you up for the day. His radio single "Awakening" is an ode to all the glorious ways coffee and music make early mornings bearable. He's not the only artist to recognize its crucial role; if you're building your morning coffee playlist, make sure to include the classic "Smellin' Coffee" by Chris Rice, which accurately implies that coffee is one of those "mercies new every morning" that Lamentations 3 talks about.
for KING & COFFEE
Are you needing some beans to fuel your addiction? for KING & COUNTRY seems to excel in every area they explore, and the latest of those areas is our favorite caffeinated beverage. As you can hear Luke Smallbone explain in the video above, the coffee is (like everything else the band does) a family affair, as his father-in-law roasts the beans close to home in Luke and his wife Courtney's garage. Pick up a bag here.
Coffee in a Name
Some artists add to a well-rounded coffee experience purely by their names, chosen or given. One half of iconic Christian hip-hop act GRITS is Stacey "Coffee" Jones, who has used the stage name Coffee throughout their lauded career. For Coffey Anderson, the coffee lifestyle chose him. The Christian singer and speaker brings reminders of the sweet aroma of brewing coffee anywhere his name appears.
Caffeinated Swag
The final element to truly perfect coffee consumption is having the right cup for your coffee and the right clothes for yourself as you sip (or chug) it. John Waller has launched a whole line of merch to accompany "Awakening," and you can drink coffee from his Crazy Faith Coffee brand while wearing a "Jesus and Caffeine" hat and t-shirt from his webstore. Switchfoot has you covered with two options for campfire style coffee mugs (find them here); they have also offered hand-selected coffee in the past as a pre-order perk, most recently for Jon Foreman's The Wonderlands. Tenth Avenue North has offered a wide variety of coffee mugs and t-shirts over the past few years, and you'll have to catch them on the road this fall to see what merch they're currently brewing up.
