The perfect live recording is a difficult feat. Outside of the carefully controlled setting of a studio where countless takes are possible, live recordings require raw musical talent, the ability to get things right the first time, avoidance of technical difficulties and perfect synergy between each band member. Beyond that, to truly capture a multi-faceted concert experience for someone who will listen years later from the comfort of their own home is difficult at best.
Some artists have risen to that challenge, managing to convey all the energy and emotion of a live performance in recorded form. The presence of a vocal audience adds a special dimension it itself, making every live album a collaboration between artists and the fans that share their concerts. Here are ten exceptional live albums that have released since the year 2010.
1. Aaron Shust: Love Made a Way
Shust performs a collage of his past hits, as well as covers of church congregation favorites, in this live recording that sounds more like a full-blown worship service.
2. Daniel Bashta: My Resurrection
Every song on this live EP feels like a stripped-down worship service around a campfire, but with strings and piano.
3. Anberlin: Never Take Friendship Personal: Live in New York City
Anberlin's live performance on their farewell tour takes the original recordings to heightened levels with the addition of various musical elements not present in the studio.
4. MUTEMATH: Odd Soul Live in DC
This high-energy EP from the beloved alt-rock band puts the fun side of their music on display.
5. John Mark McMillan: Live at the Knight
This album contains a certain element that makes it the rawest live recording in this list. McMillan knows how to be real and convey emotion through his voice, which is exactly what he does here. This recording also features vocals from Kim Walker-Smith and Katie Torwalt.
6. Jars of Clay: Under the Weather (Live in Sellersville, PA
With one of NRT's own (Kevin Davis) in attendance, Jars of Clay's live recording shows off the acoustic, spontaneous side of the seasoned group.
7. Bethel: We Will Not Be Shaken
This powerful record has touched thousands of lives with hits like "No Longer Slaves" and "Ever Be."
8. NEEDTOBREATHE: Live from the Woods
This live album from the gritty folk-rock group captures more of the emotion behind each song and transports listeners into the audience of this total-immersion live experience.
