You love your pets. They give you friendship, comfort and entertainment at all times. Christian musicians, although living a different lifestyle than most of us, also have need for such things. They have their own pets, and in this exclusive profile, we look at a few of the pets who accompany some of the top bands in the industry on their crisscrosses of the country.
Skillet: Jeff the Parakeet
Jeff has been on the road with Skillet since their
Alien Youth tour, and can sing several of the band's hit songs, including "Savior" and "Monster"--only if you give him a cracker! He has his own bunk on the Skillet bus and enjoys bubble baths!
Switchfoot: Mac Powell the Squirrel
Two years ago in Denver, a fan gave Jon Foreman her pet squirrel--only he didn't know it. The fan slipped the gerbil into his front
Designer Coats pocket, and Jon didn't notice until he was climbing onto the tour bus for the night. He was so surprised, he shouted out his go-to exclamation, "Holy Mac Powell!" And the name stuck. Mac Powell the Squirrel has become an irreplaceable part of the Switchfoot family, surfing, making appearances in several music videos and even having his own secret track on
Fading West.
Tenth Avenue North: The Snuggle the French Poodle
While they were making their 2012 album,
The Struggle, tensions were flaring among the typically docile members of Tenth Avenue North. The thing that brought them together? A French Poodle. "We named him 'The Snuggle' to remind us that any struggle can be solved with a snuggle," Mike Donehey said. They now bring the band dog on the road for their longer stretches away from home to ease the stress.
Hawk Nelson: Diamonds the Komodo Dragon
During a tour several years ago, the Hawk Nelson tour bus found itself stuck at a rest stop in Yuma, Arizona. When the bus driver lifted the hood of the vehicle, the problem was clear: there was a two-foot komodo dragon wrapped around the engine block. Rather than just throw it back into the wasteland, frontman Jon Steingard suggested the band keep it as a pet. This was right as they were writing the
Diamonds album, and thus, Diamonds the Komodo Dragon got his name. "He's really friendly, and on top of that, eats all the flies that come onto the bus," Jon said. The guys have even taught him to sign autographs with his long, sticky tongue.
Newsboys: Duncan Phillips
The Newsboys' pet can be found on just about every tour stop, making a racket. "He's a friendly sort of pet," guitarist Jody Davis said. "High energy, low focus, lots of attention needed. But we've taken a real liking to him." After adopting Duncan, the band put a drum kit in front of him, and he started to make beats. Now, their energetic pet is entertaining audiences the world over!
