YouTube star Peter Hollens's new Christmas album A Hollens Family Christmas is both a beautiful addition to any holiday soundtrack, and a project that reflects his own beliefs. As you're giving his reverent Christmas tunes a listen, you might have the sense that you've heard his voice before. We've collected six of the places Christian music fans might have run into Peter Hollens before.
"Hallelujah"
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has become one of the most-covered songs in contemporary music. Although it did not originate in a faith-based setting, many Christians have gravitated to it due to its themes. Peter Hollens' version came in the form of a chilling duet with Jackie Evancho.
Prince of Egypt Medley
The 1998 movie Prince of Egypt was an animated retelling of the story of Moses and Israel's exodus from Egypt. It also happened to feature a phenomenal soundtrack, with the main score composed by Hans Zimmer and an impressive guest vocalist list including Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Amy Grant. Peter Hollens took on several of the beloved songs to create one stirring acapella mashup.
"Baba Yetu"
"Baba Yetu" is a song composed for the Civilization IV computer game in 2005. What many players of the game likely did not realize is that the song's tribal-sounding lyrics are actually the Lord's Prayer in Swahili (a language spoken through African countries including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda). Over the past decade the song has become a staple selection for choirs and acapella groups, and Hollens' energetic version clearly proves why.
Lord of the Rings Covers
One of the things Peter Hollens quickly became known for among his YouTube audience was his love for music from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies, stories which have long been beloved by the faith community as they reflect the themes treasured by author J.R.R. Tolkien (a devout Catholic). This association would eventually evolve into a full album of his acapella arrangements of songs from the movies, titled Misty Mountains: Songs Inspired by The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. His otherworldly arrangements of songs from Middle Earth include "Into The West" (originally by Annie Lennox for Return of the King) and "I See Fire" (originally by Ed Sheeran for The Desolation of Smaug).
Les Miserables Medley
The revered 1980s musical Les Miserables, based on the classic Victor Hugo book of the same name, has consistently compelled audiences with its core story of the salvation of main character Jean Valjean. The music beautifully reflects those redemptive themes, and Peter Hollens takes on some of the beloved melodies with a confidence and strength that makes it seem like they were made for him. The vocal talents of his wife Evynne round out the stunning medley.
"Pray" by Justin Bieber
In possibly the most surprising inclusion on this list, Peter Hollens took on one of pop star Justin Bieber's earlier hits in 2011. The song focuses on choosing to pray in times of trouble, reflecting the fact that Bieber grew up in a faith background--a background he has recently publicly discussed returning to. Peter Hollens covered the heartfelt song as a means of raising money to support victims of the horrific 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
