Hallmark Channel hit series When Calls the Heart now has its entire third season available on DVD. Finding programs safe for the whole family is a rarity in our day. Even many "family" shows are riddled with adult jokes and situations. When Calls the Heart offers clean family viewing and strong role models.
Set in the fictional town of Hope Valley during the early 1900's, When Calls the Heart plays like a calmer and less gritty version of Little House on the Prairie. While some of the stories are more engaging than others, season 3 is filled with character-driven stories that families will cherish. Whether it's the moving story of a foster child or drama surrounding a mining accident in the season's climactic finale, the series manages to present challenges aplenty to its residents.
However, the show opts for more "hallmark" solutions and isn't set on making headlines with its neck-bending twists. Conflicts seem aimed primarily at teaching lessons and setting the characters back on the right path. Indeed, the show would've been well at home in decades past when such programs were the rule and not the exception.
Some things may detract from the overall viewing experience. Some of the acting sometimes shows the "strings" behind the roles. Some anachronisms in style and vibe make the production feel more like a modern traditional community than an actual setting of the time. And admittedly, some of the plots are a bit too neat. But overall, the program is an uplifting and enjoyable offering that parents can be proud to share with the little ones in their family.
Recently renewed for a 4th season, fans can count on having at least one more year to spend in Hope Valley. But for now, the 3rd season is out on DVD for their continued viewing pleasure. If you're looking for a home front drama to share with your young ones, catch up on the show now before it returns this winter.
