NRT's Dwayne Lacy rounds up 8 of the best Christian rappers you've never heard of.
There are rappers who I feel are just underrated, whether they are newbies or they just don't receive enough attention. Some of these rappers have bars and something important to say. I've put together a list (in no particular order) of some talented rappers out there who you need to take notice of. Although there are many more, I've picked 8 of my favorites for now.
1. Kambino Kambino will kill a 16 when he is a special guest as well as on his own stuff. His album Independence (from 2013) was highly underrated and overlooked, which may have been because he chose to use the "n word." However, there was so much to chew on from this album. Look what he did on the remix of Swoope's "Dreamslave:" "High school, college, majored in Astronomy, / Mastered in economics, failing in Autonomy / Splurge every urge he succumbs to / Daydreams to nightmares; it's like he never comes to." Barz! I urge you to pick his album up. Check Kam's website for music, lyrics and his blogs: http://www.iamkambino.com/
2. Kaleb Mitchell
17-year-old rapper and beat maker Kaleb Mitchell has just released his second album for free, titled 45. His first album Soliloquy garnered some buzz and caught the attention of rappers such as B. Cooper, Social Club, Deraj and more. I am waiting on him to get more press and for him to be promoted to millennials and others who love good hip hop. Kaleb has a flow that teeter totters between dope rapper (on point cadences, delivery and punchlines, hook singer) and on point producer. However, he sounds like a rap veteran in his mid to late twenties. His spiritual growth will continue, but you've got to check him out now. With the oversaturation of rappers talking about the same subject matter, it is great to have Kaleb Mitchell. Download "45" right here: https://soundcloud.com/kalebmitchell
3. Levi Hinson
I am really encouraged by the group of young rappers that are coming into the game. Levi came onto the scene at age 15, and he grabbed my attention with his song "Winter." He produced this one and laid a simple boom bap. He is not a typical "turn up rapper" with surface level lyrics. Awareness of his sin nature and struggles as a teen came early: "Been rapping since age 11 / I wrote my first rhyme in the back of my Bible, cause I was stressin' / over sins that I committed, until then I've been committed to / rejecting all the menace of the devil, never quitting and I did it / And it's funny how I try to right the wrong / When it's really the same wrong that help me write my songs." Pick up his new album Faceless to hear his struggles and honesty that you will not find in adults twice his age. http://www.rapzilla.com/rz/music/freemp3s/13203-levi-hinson-faceless
4. K. Sparks
NRT's own Mark Ryan, a phenomenal writer, did a review on K. Spark's latest album, Season's Theme. I have been a fan of K. Sparks for about three years now, and I feel this East Coast lyricist still does not get the recognition that he deserves. This brother is another one who screams "hip hop" when listening to his flow. Socially conscious and a follower of Christ, Sparks tends to address the social ills of today's tense climate while also addressing the status quo rappers of today. Connect with him at kdotsparks.com.
5. Ki'shon (Furlow)
Ki'shon is known as a battle rapper, and one with clever punchlines. However, people knew that he had more to say, and that was proven with free and impressive release Keep An Open Mind in 2015. He has people like Beleaf, J. Monty and Kaleb Mitchell as guests. Here is another album that was as good as any album that hit major retailers. Not to mention the fact that he opened for Young Thug on April 16th of this year. He signed with Collision Records, released the EP Voices and has not missed a beat. His approach to hip hop is relatable to today's rappers, yet versatile. His approach to ministry and life is different, but he wants repping Christ to be something that is a norm. Pick up Voices here.
6. Lee Williams
Las Vegas is starting to be a hotspot for young rappers like the uber talented J. Givens. There is a crew who are developing a name and even a sound that will be associated with the Vegas crew. Asaiah Ziv (who unfortunately has left the faith; keep him in your prayers), BraveArt and Lee Williams, known as Hipsavvy. Lee Williams reminds me of a talented young athlete that is entering the NBA draft. He has tremendous upside and will only get better as his skills progress and he continues to clearly define his lane. You can listen to his music at https://lwmuzic.bandcamp.com/.
7. Royal Ezenwa
I have being seeing Royal Ezenwa pop up on various sites, and I could tell that he has been grinding. He put out several singles and his Euphoric EP, and this Nigerian rapper is not resting. Thankfully I finally listened to the EP, and I encourage you to do the same. In society, old and young, cross culturally, there is a longing for the ultimate satisfaction that can only be filled by Jesus. Royal Ezenwa bears a little resemblance (in voice, but not flow) to Swoope, but he does more rapid fire and aggressive rapping. Take notice! Check out the EP here.
8. Reconcile
H-Town stand up! Reconcile is another rapper who has been on the scene for a while. He and Corey Paul formed the Frontline Movement, which was kickstarted by their heart for ministry and reaching out to everyday people in the hood or elsewhere. Some may be confused as to why he is included on this list. It's because Reconcile has not gotten a lot of press with the NRT audience. If you have never seen this dude perform, you are missing out on raw emotion and charisma that draw you in with the first song. You can download a song here, and check out the full EP on iTunes.
