Christians covering mainstream hit songs is nothing new. It's a great way to bring attention to their larger catalog of work as millions of fans seek to stream versions of their favorite tracks. Controversary aside, these are some of our favorites that have popped up in the last couple of months.
Know of others? Post them in the comment section below!
Jordan Feliz f/ David Dunn - "Drag Me Down" (One Direction cover)
These two new artists on the scene simply slay the medley of this sugar coated mainstream hit and prove in three minutes why both may be the future of Christian pop.
for KING & COUNTRY "Out of the Woods" (Taylor Swift cover)
A few months ago, fK&C released this killer cover of TayTay's single that's just now climbing the charts. It's so good, the singer herself pointed her social media masses in their direction, calling it one of the best she's heard. Impress the biggest pop star on the planet? Check.
Ryan Corn - "White Flag" (Dido cover)
Six years ago, a mainstream artist named Dido released her biggest single of her career with "White Flag." New artist Ryan Corn released a haunting version late last year in his signature singer/songwriter style. His acoustic performance is below, but make sure you hunt down the fully produced version on iTunes here. It's pretty much on repeat in our office.
Sidewalk Prophets - "Desperado" (The Eagles cover)
Lead singer Dave Frey is one of the best in the industry. He really could sing anything and it would be awesome. Which is why we're really excited the band is launching a new web series of covers. The concept is simple: guitar. Voice. Camera. The result is anything but. It's brilliant.
Jon Guerra f/ Vertical Church Band - "Who Am I" (Casting Crowns cover)
Another powerful new voice on the scene is Jon Guerra, who partners with his worship group Vertical Church Band to produce a new take on one of contemporary Christian music's biggest hit songs, "Who Am I" by Casting Crowns. Um, studio recording, please?
Kevin McNeese started NRT in 2002 and has worked in the industry since 1999 in one form or another. He has been a fan of Christian music since 1991.
