As the song from the Lego Movie says, "Everything is cool when you're part of a team." And for these five bands nominated for 2015 Group of the Year, they exhibit just how cool a team can be. These power bands have made a definite impact in Christian music over the past year, and we'll look at each band's merits, and why they even might come out with the win.
Fireflight
After a string of hit songs from their first four albums including "You Decide," "Unbreakable," "For Those Who Wait" and "Stay Close," Fireflight released INNOVA, their first new album in over three years. INNOVA is the result of a successful fan funding campaign and is releasing independently through The Fuel Music.
The long-awaited album was forged in a challenging season for the group, informed by struggles that only made the final project stronger. The result is something of a rebirth for the band, 15 years into their career. Fans have already had a taste of INNOVA with "Resuscitate," "We Are Alive" and "Safety" featuring Anberlin's Stephen Christian.
Why they could win: Fireflight could win Group of the Year because there is a lot of infectious energy in these great new songs as they celebrate their new life as a band and the truth that they are alive in Christ. Several of the songs like "Keep Fighting," "Lightning" and "We Are Alive" have a very catchy and worshipful electronic dance-pop musical style with a holy energy and vitality pulsing through every word. In my opinion, this is their career best album.
Hawk Nelson
Hawk Nelson has released their seventh studio album Diamonds, the second release since their reinvention with guitarist Jon Steingard taking over vocals. I've long enjoyed their brand of faith based music, especially their hit songs "Crazy Love," "Live Life Loud," "Bring Em Out," "Friend Like That," "Everything You Ever Wanted" and more recently "Words" and "A Million Miles Away" from their last album Made.
Standout song "Drops in the Ocean" is one of my favorite songs of the year. I can't get enough of the Biblical truth found here, and I love when artists take God's Word from the Bible and turn it into a great and catchy song filled with truth. I sing the song to God, as being sung by God over us, with all of my heart. I know for a fact "If you want to know, How far My love can go, just how deep, just how wide, If want to see, How much you mean to Me, Look at My hands, look at My side."
If you like "Drops in the Ocean," don't miss the other infectious tracks, "Diamonds," "Live Like You're Loved," "Sold Out," and "Thank God for Something."
Why they could win: Hawk Nelson could win Group of the Year because these are among the best songs this band has ever recorded, and Diamonds is the most impactful album of their impressive career.
RED
The band's new album Of Beauty and Rage is "about suffering and finding the beauty in that," says vocalist Michael Barnes. "No one in this world likes to suffer, myself included, but we only become the strong individuals we are today from the trials and hardships we faced in the past. I've been hooked by RED since I first heard "Breathe into Me," "Already Over," "Lost" and "Let Go" from End of Silence. They have always tried to challenge listeners to be real with themselves and confront their struggles head on. Even in the darkest parts of our lives there is room for hope; it's up to each individual to fill those parts so that he/she can continue to push forward in dark times and be thankful in brighter days.
Why they could win: RED's latest songs are among the most accessible and worshipful songs they have ever recorded, including the standout tracks, "Darkest Part," "Of These Chains," "Yours Again" and "Take Me Over." Even if you don't normally listen to hard rock albums, the artistic nature of these songs draws you in and elicits an emotional response.
The City Harmonic
No worship band in recent history has created the kind of reaction The City Harmonic did with their EP Introducing The City Harmonic, which features the standout anthem "Manifesto." They have followed that up with each album being their new best: I Have a Dream (It Feels Like Home), which features "Mountaintop" and "Holy (Wedding Day)," and Heart, which features "A City on a Hill" and "Praise the Lord." The band is made of frontman Elias Dummer, bassist Eric Fusilier, guitarist Aaron Powell and drummer Josh Vanderlaan, a group of musicians who doesn't have much interest in gathering fans, but rather aims to come alongside other members of the Body of Christ.
Why they could win: We Are contains eleven brand new songs that continue the musical journey, with lyrics that point to the wonders of our God combined with sweeping melodies and infectious choruses that will be replayed in your mind over and over again. The album is a collection of modern hymns, psalms and spiritual songs for the Church, born out of churches working together and drawing inspiration from traditions and styles of worship throughout the ages. You'll experience the majestic nature of God in the music of The City Harmonic. We Are is now my top overall album by The City Harmonic.
Hillsong UNITED
"Empires is the story of two worlds," says Joel Houston. "We wanted to create songs that first seek to listen, then speak the good news of Jesus and His grace into the dichotomy, tension and hopeful-collision of this broken and fragile world we see here and now, and the unshakeable and mysterious reality of the Kingdom we can't see. Our desire has been to simply create the most honest project we could."
Following the monumental success of "Oceans" from Zion, this is the next chapter for Hillsong UNITED's Joel Houston, Taya Smith, Matt Crocker and others who are all featured on this stellar collection of Jesus-focused songs for the Church.
Why they could win: UNITED is putting out its most ambient and worshipful songs they have ever recorded, including the standout tracks, "Heart Like Heaven," "Touch the Sky," "Even When it Hurts" and "Closer Than You Know." I hope to be singing "Heart like Heaven" with fellow believers. You'll sing along loudly with the reverent chorus "Singing Holy, Heart like Heaven, singing Holy, God Almighty, singing Holy is Your Name."
Who do you think will win?
