We take a look back to highlight ten of the best tracks of Bleach's rock and roll career.
It's former Bleach vocalist Davy Basinger's birthday on November 9, and to celebrate, we're giving you a gift: the breakdown of ten of Bleach's best songs.
1. "Once Again Here We Are," from Bleach
This self-referential jam is essentially a thesis statement for the band, explaining "there is something more I want to give / more than just a melody, I guess." The semi-repetitive musical structure perfectly matches the lyrics talking about the daily grind of traveling show to show.
2. "Epidermis Girl," from Space
This classic has a bit of a Nirvana-esque vibe tempered by just enough punk to make it truly representative of the post-grunge era of rock and roll. The lyrics center on wanting a love that goes beyond skin deep.
3. "All to You," from Bleach
This is a flawless example of a punk rock ballad, confessional and moody. This song is a soundtrack of surrender for souls who feel heavy-hearted.
4. "Super Good Feeling," from Static
This song ventures more into the punk pop arena than most of Bleach's discography, but with a bass groove that grounds it firmly more towards the punk side. This feel-good song is emblematic of an era.
5. "Good As Gold," from Farewell Old Friends
This song, which came at the tail end of the band's career, represents much of what made them so strong. The unabashed punk guitar tones, lyrics that are intentional without being heavy-handed and instant head-bobbing quality all make this song a standout.
6. "Waving Goodbye," from Static
This song came at the tail end of the 90s, which is evident in the way the musical structuring has hints of ska influence. The melody of this chorus is reminiscent of Green Day as it channels just a little angst.
7. "Heartbeat," from Bleach
This song has a certain degree of potent honesty as it looks to find peace at the feet of Jesus. The guitar hook is memorable here as well.
8. "Static," from Static
This song utilizes electronic elements in a way that sets them at the very forefront of a movement. The sound might be reminiscent of early Skillet albums, although Bleach remains more firmly in the post-grunge vein.
9. "Jaded Now," from Astronomy
Although Bleach is primarily known for their rockers, this is another more mellow diversion that merited inclusion. The lyrics are some of the group's strongest, calling for hope in the face of a world that seems to make cynicism the best default option. The slow jam builds into a beautiful atmospheric rocker.
10. "Rock N Roll," from Static
The phenomenal guitar lick alone qualifies "Rock N Roll" for this list. This song is a catchy, infectious rocker of the sort today's rock scene sorely misses.
Did we hit all the highlights? What songs would you add to this list?
