Our Favorite Moments From the 2015 GMA Dove Awards
The entire show is now viewable on-demand, and we pick our favorites here
For the first time, the Gospel Music Association has brought the entire Dove Awards to YouTube in high definition for on-demand viewing. So we thought we'd list our favorite moments from the show! Let us know yours in the comments below.
Building 429 Starts Show With A Bang
The curtains opened and the guys of Building 429 let everyone know that they were in for a huge night of live music and performances. Look at the rhythm of these guys! And busting out the confetti cannons before some even got seated for the night? Well played B49.
Bill Gaither & Matt Maher Sing "Because He Lives"
Bill Gaither has tirelessly brought artists together for decades, and his performance of the classic "Because He Lives," accompanied by Matt Maher on piano, was no different. But instead of a choir of artists behind him, the audience provided the voices, and it was a beautiful and touching intro to Matt Maher's performance of "Because He Lives (Amen)."
KB Brings Down the House
Joined with Mattie Montgomery from For Today, KB had the performance everyone was talking about the next day with "I Believe," a visual representation of street crowds actually working and unifying with police rather than fighting them. The industry-heavy crowd was a bit dead at the beginning, but were on their feet by the time KB uttered the night's theme loud and clear: "We're better together." There's no doubt that the Rap/Urban genre had a great night at the Doves, with other performances by Tedashii, NF and Derek Minor, but it was carried high by this performance.
Michael W. Smith Hosts This Year's In Memoriam
Billy Ray Hearn and Andrea Crouch were at the top of Michael W. Smith's mind as he introduced the annual In Memoriam video.
Lecrae Wins Artist of the Year
It happened. A rap artist actually won Artist of the Year at the Doves, and against A-level artists for KING & COUNTRY, Francesca Battistelli, Kari Jobe and MercyMe. Bill Gaither nailed a few great jokes and then the house erupted at the news. Lecrae made his characteristic humble acceptance speech that he's done so many times now, pointing the attention back to His creator.
Things Get A Little Bit Louder With Crowder
If you saw Crowder on The Rock & Worship Roadshow earlier this year, or if you saw his new music video he just released, you've seen this performance. Same players, same arrangement, same LED bedazzled microphone and banjo and the same energy. But who cares? This song is still getting better every single time, and there's not a song out there that builds out of the chorus into the bridge better than this.
Lauren Daigle Sings Her Song of the Year
Looking absolutely stunning and joined by the strings section of the Lipscomb University orchestra, Lauren proved why she's New Artist of the Year material and capable of winning Song of the Year with her live performance of "How Can It Be." Our only complaint? The shortened version left us wanting much more.
Acapella Version Of "When I Survey the Wonderous Cross"
Fast forward the stiff cue-card intro to enjoy this beautiful four-part acapella rendition of this classic hymn from Southern Gospel's Mark Lowry and The Martins.
Danny Gokey's Live Performance
Danny is one of those artists that needs little flash and fanfare around him, and he proves that with this fantastic performance of his Song of the Year nominated hit "Hope In Front Of Me."
Israel & New Breed & Kirk Whalum Close Out the Show
Israel continues to blend Gospel and Praise & Worship, so this is a fitting way to end a show celebrating all genres of Christian music. His band is top notch, and the transition into the worship staple "You Are Good" was a fantastic way to close out the show. God is good, all the time!
Kevin McNeese started NRT in 2002 and has worked in the industry since 1999 in one form or another. He has been a fan of Christian music since 1991, witnessing first hand the year that changed Christian music forever.
