AN NRT EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
A Demon Hunter Halloween
Lead singer Ryan Clark answers some timely questions about spiders, pumpkins and screaming.

Whether you don a costume for Halloween, harvest, or a comics convention/medieval festival that happens to coincide on Oct. 31, there's a whole lot of loco going on today.

Tis the season to be screaming, it seems, and in conjunction with his appearance on the joint NoiseTrade Sampler from Solid State Recordings and NRT, Demon Hunter frontman/lead singer Ryan Clark answered seven timely questions.

What's the scariest thing you could possibly imagine (both funny and serious)?

A spider the size of a basketball--or bigger. I HATE spiders. That's funny and serious.

What's the best tip you could give for people trying to learn how to scream for a hard rock band?

Practice a lot. Try a variety of methods. Listen to tips from those that know, and utilize the voice that comes natural to YOU; don't emulate.

What's the "it" costume this year, in your opinion?

This year I went to a party as a member of the Guilty Remnant, from HBO's Leftovers. Of the 800-plus people there, ONE person got it, but I assumed it'd be pretty obscure. I like costumes like that--the real specific, niche ones. I think it's fun to see who gets it. A friend of mine went as a Lone Star can cut into the shape of a man, from True Detective. It took me about five seconds to figure it out; it was great.

What's better: Going door to door for candy, or going to a party--and why?

If you're young, and you can trick-or-treat in a decent area, that's always fun. The older you get, the more I think parties are the way to go. Getting to see all of the costumes and hang out with friends is the best.

What is most misunderstood about hardcore/metal music?

I think heavy music is the most misunderstood music, period. People assume a lot of things about it at first listen. Those who are unfamiliar might think it sounds like noise, when in actuality it's one of the more precise, technical, and instrumentally demanding genres. A lot of people liken it to classical music in this regard. They may also think that the aggressive nature of the music means that its content is inherently evil, which is less often the case than you'd think.

Which worship song would you love to see get a hardcore remake and why?

"It Is Well [With My Soul]." I'm more a fan of the old standards. There's something innately haunting about many of them. I'm sure it's been done before, but I've yet to hear one that I love.

You have a pumpkin and a knife... what do you carve?

The Demon Hunter logo, of course!
