BEHIND THE SONG WITH KEVIN DAVIS
#576 - "Steady Heart" by Steffany Frizzell-Gretzinger
Steffany Gretzinger shares the personal journey through uncertainty that birthed this exquisite worship song.

Bethel Music's Steffany Gretzinger has a deep desire to create worship music that goes beyond the usual boundaries of the genre. Her heart to listen before she sings creates exquisite and refreshing music to aid listeners in experiencing God. You can hear Steffany's anointed, emotive and prophetic worship in Bethel's "You Know Me," "Closer," "Letting Go," "Be Still" and "We Dance" from You Make Me Brave.

Steffany delivered her first child Wonder Grace near the release date of her solo debut album The Undoing. It has eleven original worship songs, all beautifully produced in a stripped down piano/guitar style. These songs were written from a place of reflecting on what it means to be undone by God. The project is intended to lead listeners to that place also. I had the chance to speak with Steffany about "Steady Heart" from The Undoing.

Please tell me the personal story behind "Steady Heart."

Amanda Cook is one of my best friends. We had a week away together just to write songs together. We weren't writing for an album, we just had this passion on our hearts from God to do it, and we want to be faithful stewards of that. We prayed that God would inspire us all week. We went through old notes and things that moved us, but we hadn't gotten anywhere with them on our own with the ideas.

Amanda came with the line "I can't see what's in front of me, still I will trust You." Then she had a recording of a moment of her sitting with the Lord, like a lot of our iPhone recordings. I really felt something was there, and I asked if we could write a song out of that. Then, the whole chorus filled my heart. I didn't know if it was the same song or not, but it made me want to sing.

We wrote the rest of the song from there sitting with the Lord, worshipping together. The picture we felt the Lord gave us as we waited on Him was seeing myself standing at the front of a thick, dark wooded forest. I saw my hand, and the hand of Jesus reaching for me. The sun was going down, and it was getting dark. I knew I had to walk through this forest, but Jesus was giving me His hand to lead me on.

That was the picture I had, and to me this whole song was happening in the dark. He was leading us through the night and through the dark. At the end of the song is the first light of day, and we are out of the woods.

Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT): "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see."

2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Psalm 119:105 (NKJV): "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."

Proverbs 13:12 (NKJV): "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But when the desire comes, it is a tree of life."

Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV): "Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

Psalm 46:10 (NKJV): "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!"

1 Kings 19:12 (KJV): "And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."

1 Corinthians 4:1 (NKJV): "Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God."

What is the takeaway message?

At the end of the song I sing "And as the dawn breaks, and the clouds clear, in an open space, together we will run." We asked the Lord for vision, and the whole song came to us. This song is a picture of the whole journey we were on, and our hope for the song is for anyone to make the journey their own.

The song is so beautiful musically, and it matches what we are singing, making the whole song a journey. What's amazing is that I would have normally felt uncomfortable about these songs being released where a lot of people could hear my personal moments with the Lord. That used to be a huge source of anxiety for me. Now that's gone. I'm about to be a mom for the first time, and everything is in perspective now. Everything changes, your priorities, the way you see the world, your sense of responsibility. It is a gift. I feel myself being unwound and undone in the very best way. It feels like a really big kiss from God as I released this album and expect my baby to be born.

I am excited to share these songs with people. This shift in my heart is from just keeping these moments with God to myself and wanting to protect them, to as a mom, wanting to share them and give people every opportunity to process and grow in their relationships with the Lord. It is okay to get messy in community and in the presence of God, to be fully whole and closer to God. The hope is for deeper intimacy with God.

Lyrics:
I can't see
What's in front of me
Still I will trust You
Still I will trust You

Steady heart that keeps on going
Steady love that keeps on holding
Lead me on
Steady grace that keeps forgiving
Steady faith that keeps believing
Lead me on

Though the sky is dark
And the wind is wild
You'll never leave me
You'll never leave me

Though the night is long
There is a coming dawn
The light is breaking
The light is breaking

Steady heart that keeps on going
Steady love that keeps on holding
Lead me on
Steady grace that keeps forgiving
Steady faith that keeps believing
Lead me on

And as the dawn breaks
And the clouds clear
In an open space
Together we will run

The Undoing is an excellent set of songs that focus on the central themes of asking God to inhabit our inner being and truly allow the power of the Holy Spirit to sanctify us, along with relying solely on the love of Jesus to mold our hearts and make us more like Him. I really love how expressive these songs are. Steffany loves a lot, and that is evident throughout her stellar "gourmet" offering. These are all stand-out tracks filled with overwhelming biblical truth, and they are companions in my personal prayer and worship time.

Steffany sings songs with an amazing passion, with unashamed praise and gratitude to our Savior that is very inspiring and emotionally moving. All of her songs are poignant and powerful with earnest, worshipful lyrics. The Undoing is one of the top worship albums of the year.

"Steady Heart" is a hook-filled, ambient indie-pop vibe prayer song that proclaims "I can't see what's in front of me, still I will trust You." I could hear the song being played in coffee shops alongside artists like Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles. It is truly one of my favorite tracks on this flawless album. The song has a special moment of revelation "as the dawn breaks" at the end of the song, which is a beautiful picture of how we need to wait on the Lord for His special moments of revelation to us. We need to be attentive to His "still small voice." I feel like the lilting musical bed of this song invites us to be better listeners to what God wants to tell us.

This song reminds me that we need to have that type of faith that Jesus describes in the Bible: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Being a Christian means that you walk by faith, not by sight. Remember the definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see." Amen to that!
