Best Teen Album Of The Year | Posted June-06-2009

Newcomers, PureNRG introduce their self-titled debut album targeted for kids, tweens, and teens. This trio couldn't have chosen a better time to jump into the market with a fresh new mix of catchy pop songs that show their true desire to spread the Word og God.

With the soon-to-be absence of the group that practically defined the tween pop music genre, Jump5, PureNRG can keep their legacy going. From the first track on the record, "360," right down to the last track "It's Still Love," lessons of love, forgiveness, and setting a Christ-like example are found everywhere on this album. The upbeat song "What If" promotes being satisfied with who you are and who God made you. "Thy Word," a song originally sung by the legendary Amy Grant, is given a more pop-like feel but at the same time does not stray far from the classic, original version. One of the slower songs on the record, "Someday," shares many similarities with the MercyMe hit "I Can Only Imagine" and also proves that Carolyne Myers, 11, Caroline Williams, 12, and 14 year old Jordan Yates (who looks strikingly similar to Jump5's Brandon Hargest) have great and mature voices in spite of their young ages.

There is no doubt PureNRG is a breath of fresh air for parents in the midst of "This Madness" offered to today's young people through the media. Already they have performed for crowds of more than 3,000. There is no question about it. PureNRG's positive, fun, and faith infused lyrics can guarantee that they'll be around for a long time. And that's a big relief.

Since his fourth album, Something to Say, Matthew West’s popularity has certainly increased. Whether it’s his experience writing the single “Something to Say” while he was unable to speak, or singing the most played song on the radio in 2008, recently West has been able to endear himself to more fans. In order to give fans something to chew on in between full-length projects, Matthew West seems to have jumped on the EP bandwagon, and now gives us The Writer's Room: An Acoustic EP.

Beginning the EP is “Something To Say,” which is still very upbeat, although the lack of music in the bridge leaves West singing nineteen ‘na nas’ practically by himself. The piano which drove “You Are Everything” is replaced by the guitar in the acoustic tune. “Only Grace,” off of West’s album, History, doesn't undergo much change, and the acoustic pop sound of “More” leaves me thinking it should have been either more up tempo or more of an inspiring ballad. A bonus song from Something to Say, “My Favorite Part” is an uncomplicated lullaby that does illustrate God’s existence through his creation (‘God loves us/ God is real and you're the proof/ 'Cause only God could make an angel like you’). “The Day Before You” was an odd choice for the EP as the guitar-driven contemporary pop tune was also originally released on History and doesn't represent any great chart conquest.

One other deceptive aspect of The Writers Room: An acoustic EP is that while Matthew West is skilled at writing engaging songs, the song selection tends to lean towards the more generic radio-friendly lyrics (lines ‘There's only grace/ There's only love/ There's only mercy and believing’ and ‘I love you more than the sun/ And the stars that I taught how to shine’ make up the core foundations of “Only Grace and “More” respectively). It’s extremely likely that only diehard fans of Matthew West picked up Something to Say Special Edition, but it will take fans that die harder than diehard fans to pick up The Writers Room: An acoustic EP

Awsome 1 Of The Best | Posted May-14-2009
All Of The Above is the new, full-length studio release by modern worship phenomenon, Hillsong United. Every year, they seem to hash out a new record, satisfying the numerous fans who hunger for new music that is uplifting, inspirational, and full of declaration.

The first track to open up the album is "Point Of Difference," a track filled with whirling guitars and lyrics that just ooze of passion and declaration, a great combination that makes this a rock-solid opener. "Break Free" takes the beat up a notch with swift electric riffs and drum beats, accompanied with a message that is pretty self-explanatory: breaking free from the bonds and chains that have held us down for so long and dancing in the presence of Christ. "Desperate People" takes a slower approach, filling the atmosphere with praise and adoration directed to our Savior. "Lead Me To The Cross" is one of the more subdued tracks, with a message that utters deliverance in a spine-tingling way. "Hosanna" is another chilling tune, this time putting the listener into a state of worship and personal sacrifice and devotion toward God. "Solution" is by far one of the most amazing tracks on the record, if the not the best. "My Future Decided" provides comfort and security in knowing that Jesus has all the plans laid out specifically for each of our lives.

Their music is unique and even though some people might find them monotonous, the lyrics are heartfelt and easy to learn.

All Of The Above is an outstanding release, and for awhile now it has been the number one worship album worldwide. With that fact stated, it is safe to say that this record is a great addition to any worship lover's collection.

An Just OK Album | Posted May-14-2009
United We Stand, is a largely Hillsong-by-the-numbers effort offering plenty in the way of familiarity. Everything one has come to expect from a United album is here - the live atmosphere, the big arrangements and a dogged insistence in rewriting the same worship song over and over.

One listen to United We Stand confirms it as a predictable successor to previous United efforts. The faster songs are catchy and energetic without managing to sound memorable. Lyrically, the band never ventures beyond the expected either. The usual worship clichés abound, as each song on United We Stand involves some variety of their typical "Live for You," "Tell the world about Jesus," and "Jesus, You are beautiful" lyrics.

Chronologically, the album sounds drawn out as well. United We Stand starts off briskly enough, with three energetic live numbers ("The Time Has Come," "Take It All," "From God Above") that prove why this band is a natural favorite among youth. It is not long however, until the album gets bogged down by momentum-robbing slow worship songs that seem unnecessarily placed together, and by the time it finally draws to a close, not even the enthusiastic "Revolution" can pick this album back up.

Hillsong United are not necessarily known for variety between albums and one could argue that their fans would prefer it any other way. There's nothing on United We Stand that we haven't already heard on Look To You or More Than Life. Nothing here is new, yet nothing is missing either. Those who know and love United will no doubt enjoy this, since their favorite worship band has once again delivered a familiar batch of songs that will please more than inspire.

They Haven't Changed Much! | Posted May-14-2009
With this project, Hillsong United hasn't deviated much from their usual formula of taking church worship songs and giving them a rock edge. The I Heart Revolution: With Hearts As One is a bit of a mixed bag, with some very satisfying songs and some not-so-exciting recordings. Actually, it's on the more energetic tracks that they shine, with the band doing full justice to the potential of the songs. When it rolls around to the quieter tracks, however, it's a bit reminiscent of any given Hillsong Live album.

This album, the songs have been recorded from many of the different countries where they have performed, making this the major differentiating factor from their other releases. Only one of those songs is actually new-"You'll Come"-making this a global re-recording of relatively well-known Hillsong anthems; some of these are quite good, with the enthusiasm that United are well-known for clearly evident in these recordings, as well as the crowd's excitement. A major downer, though, is that most of the album's tracks just sound like the usual contemporary Christian worship music. Another problem is that you sometimes can't hear the lyrics over the sound of the crowd, it does admittedly make for a more accurate representation of their concerts.

Granted, there are some excellent tracks on this album, but if you already own one of their previous live projects, or their studio record All of the Above, then there is probably no need to purchase With Hearts As One. Still, Hillsong United does put in a solid performance for their louder songs, which is only accentuated by the fervour of the crowd; in the end, this may be the project's saving grace.
