Charlie Hall [The Bright Sadness] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
Charlie Hall provides a vibrant and yet very bold approach towards his message. The album is a pretty laid back album that just seems to flow, very soothing and just draws you in. If you are a Charlie Hall fan then of course this album is for you, if not or never listened to his music I urge you to take a listen to this album.

The album has a unique sound to it, I really have not heard anything like it. The music is at a slower pace and just seems to fit the structure of the band. The harmonics and blending of the pitches of voices are outstanding. It has a light rock feel to it but with so much more.

At first glance of the song list I came across “Hookers and Robbers”; it was a song I was kind of scared to listen to, but it intrigued me to take a glance at what his concept was. In the song it talks about different types of lifestyles and people, but when the chorus hits it says, “Come as you are” in the bible it talks about Jesus being around the sinners and how he wanted everyone to come as they were, but not to stay the same.

This album covers different spectrums of the beam, giving you balance between being yourself and being what God wants you to be, being in a hard place in your life and going to a place where there is an abundance of freedom, confusion and understanding, denial and truth, spiritual death and spiritual life.

As the album you hear lyrics, such as “Life comes from God”—You Are God, “Christ has died and, Christ has risen, Christ will come again”—Mystery. God gave his only son so that we can have everlasting life in Heaven if we choose to live for him. Jesus Christ died for your sins, rose on the third day, and he is coming again to bring you home. Will You Be Ready?

CLOSING THOUGHTS
I urge you to take a listen to this album and listen to the words of the songs and see truly what is being said to you and for you. Not just with this album, but with every album you listen to. The lyrics are sometimes that small whisper in the wind, what you need to hear…you just have to listen and willing to listen, it is not always in plain sight.

Bart Millard [Hymned Again] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
Back in August of 2005, MercyMe front-man Bart Millard released his first solo CD. I was somewhat surprised at what content he would cover with the solo disc, considering it was so different from the material he had done with MercyMe. But, when I first took a listen to Hymned No. 1, I was blown away! I only wish it was not one of the reviews that I had written that had been lost in our great site deletion last September (2008). I was particularly proud of that one. The CD was amazing and in the review I had mentioned that I was ‘a sucker for the hymns’. Hymns are an absolute favorite of mine. They come from a time that wasn’t marred with radio charts and record sales. They were written with the intent purpose of helping God’s people bring praise and worship to the Lord Himself, in the form of music. If only the focus of music remained the same today.

Fast forward two years from Millard’s successful solo debut, Hymned No. 1 to his brand-new solo disc, a sequel if you will, simply titled Hymned Again. Bart is back with an all new array of hymns done in only a way that he can do them. There are some real good ones on here too. The first song of note, in which I find myself singing not only in church, but sometimes while I work during the day is, “What a Day That Will Be”. The song is constant reminder that this world is not our home, and that a day is coming that we will just stand in awe in. The hymn, originally written in 1955 by Jim Hill remains one of my favorites to this day. The chorus speaks volumes, it is written, “What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see, / And I look upon His face, / The One who saved me by His grace; / When He takes me by the hand / And leads me through the Promised Land, / What a day, glorious day that will be.”

Another track on this record that caught my attention was the Hank Williams’ penned revelation, “I Saw the Light”. I have to be honest; I had not heard this one too often. The church that I had gone to for nearly 4 years had hymn books, but no hymn in the book was newer then 1937, so I had not heard this one. But after hearing Bart’s version along with a live version from David Crowder*Band’s Remedy Club Live (which also released August 19th), and a reference to the song on DecembeRadio’s new song from Satisfied, “Gasoline”, I quickly grew to love this song and its dynamic message. While Williams himself battled with alcohol addiction, he points out in the song, “Praise the Lord, I saw the light”. I think we can all relate to that in some way or another, Amen?

For those of you who have listened to Hymned No. 1, you’ll notice that Amy Grant’s husband and country superstar Vince Gill lends his signature voice to “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior”. Well he’s back for round two, this time lending his voice to the record’s sole Millard written song, “Jesus Cares for Me”. The duet between the two once again is simply amazing and the song itself proves and solidifies Millard’s ability to write thought-provoking and ministering music. Who knows, maybe someday, “Jesus Cares for Me” will end up in a modern hymn-book. You never know!

Bart also covers one of my all-time favorites with “Victory in Jesus”, written in 1939 by Eugene Bartlett. I especially like the musical arrangement for the track as well. It almost sounds like something you would hear on a Broadway musical. It’s got a ‘big band’ sound to it that makes it sound much different then the traditional arrangement. Nice stuff here.

Another hymn included on the record, “Down at the Cross”, a hymn that most are familiar with and perhaps the oldest hymn covered on the album, written in 1878 by Elisha Hoffman. Bart gives the song a revamped country bluesy-rock sound that shines throughout this wonderfully written piece of music. The words of “Down at the Cross”, could very well fit in with a lot of the praise and worship tunes found today in modern churches.

The last song that stuck out, with it’s beautifully simplicity is “Grace That Is Greater”. The song simply features Millard on vocals with a female vocalist providing the harmonizing BGV’s and a ukulele playing was simple, but effective in its delivery. First thing I thought of when I heard the music was Tiny Tim. Not the singing, but the ukulele. I don’t know why, but hey, things pop in your head sometimes and you wonder, ‘Where the heck did that come from?” lol.

Lending BGV’s on the album once again is the talented Anthony Evans. I much enjoyed his contributions on Hymned No. 1 and his work on this is just as stellar. Passion and Watermark’s Christy Nockels lends her voice on “I Stand Amazed” as well.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
All in all, I was impressed with Millard’s effort on the second Hymned album. I was really hoping that he would come back with a second CD, considering the first solo record was aptly titled, Hymned No. 1. Although as I mentioned in the review that I love hymns, I wasn’t as impressed with this one as I was with the first, but I can pretty much guarantee anyone who enjoys not only the hymns, but Millard’s first record, will be sure to like this one. Musically it’s way different then his material with MercyMe, but that’s what I like about it the most. Doing a solo record outside your main group’s material gives an artist an opportunity to do the style he likes the most and that’s what you have with Hymned Again. Impressive work here!

This Beautiful Republic [Perceptions] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
Just over a year ago, This Beautiful Republic debuted with their album, Even Heroes Need A Parachute. Their newest album, Perceptions, deals with the difference between how we see ourselves and how God sees us. About half way through trying to critique this album, I stopped in my tracks, sat back and said, “Wow, they’re good.” Not only are the lyrics honest and thought-provoking, but the music is exciting and unique. Sophomore albums have a tendency to sound too much like the first albums, or all the music sounds the same. But Perceptions has decidedly shown some serious growth in musicality and message.

Members of This Beautiful Republic are Adam Smith, Jeremy Kunkle, Brandon Paxton, and Andy Smith, and lead singer Ben Olin. The style could be classified as anything from pop to hardcore. In a press release, Olin says that “the title deals with the idea that there are at least two sides to every story. Things inevitably appear different to each individual based on their experiences, predispositions, prejudices, or vantage point. When we understand this—that what we see may not be the whole truth—we arrive where grace and love prevail.”

The first song, “Pain”, is a beautiful parallel of our relationship with God; a love song to Him. He’s always there, ready to love. It’s us who are hesitant and unsure if we want to open up our hearts. We’re too afraid of what we might lose, or what pain we might go through. But He’s always there, waiting. “We won't fall again, / if you will let me lead / We’ll fall in love, / if you will hold to me / Never let go, / endure the pain to find no pain at all.”

Tracks two and three, “Surrender Saved My Life,” and “Learning to Fall,” are both about personal surrender. We’ve all got at least one war waging inside of us. Like the apostle Paul said in Romans 7:24, “What a wretched man I am! Who will save me from this body of death?” Sometimes we are so disgusted by ourselves we just want to cry out. There is no getting out of our self-dug pits without surrendering to God. But the passage continues on in verse 25 saying, “Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord.” “Surrender Saved My Life” tells us to wave our white flag, give ourselves up, and give it all to God. “Must I open up again? / I don't need this / Healing hurts a little more, / but I'll be stronger than before…”

Track four, “Beautifully Broken,” is about being broken and made new by Jesus, and also how Jesus was beautifully broken on the cross for us. There is a lot of scripture filling these words. This song comes back to the theme of perception: difference between how we see us and how God sees us. “So You see me as Your own / Holy in the light of Your redemption / By the blood and by the thorn / We’re called to life.”

Track seven talks about how overwhelming the love of God can be. We can’t understand truly that Jesus loved us individually enough to die for us. We are so undeserving. Basically, it’s saying, I am such a sinner, how can I ever love enough? Why did Jesus die for me? It’s so beyond what we can understand. “For the life of me I can't explain / The reason You died and the reason You came / was for the life of me.”

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Throughout the album, Perceptions offers listeners serious questions that are asked and struggled with by most Christians, young and old. The last few songs deal with grace, second chances, changing the world, and death. Sometimes life seems desperate and we feel quite lost, but the answer always needs to come back to Jesus. Looking at ourselves and others the way Jesus does will make all the difference, no matter what circumstances life brings. This CD has something to offer everyone that will listen. It’s a great album, and I highly recommend getting your copy right away.

David Crowder*Band [Remedy Club Tour Edition] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
When I was looking over the press-release for David Crowder*Band’s new release, Remedy Club Live, I came across the sentence that read, ‘First ever concert DVD’. I was surprised. I thought after all the success and as much as the name David Crowder has been synonymous with praise and worship music, that he had to have released a live concert DVD prior. Well, I guess I was wrong! J

Those who were able to attend a date of the Remedy Club Tour late last year and early this year appear to have enjoyed a good show if this release is any indication of a typical show. I have seen the David Crowder*Band a few times and have even gotten the opportunity to meet David both times and after doing so, I can tell you his demeanor and aura came across to me as humble. This guy’s sole motivation is celebrate what God has done in his life and how he returns the favor by putting his all in his music, which in my opinion is among the most God-honoring found out there.

Remedy Club Live might as well be a Greatest Hits album live in concert. It has all of Crowder’s hits along with cuts from his most recent release, Remedy, which hit stores last September. The only song that was missing that I absolutely love and is among my favorite Crowder hits was “Open Skies”. I was kind of surprised with this being his first concert DVD, that that song would have been a shoo-in for this release. But, I was impressed with the track listing nonetheless.

As the band careens through its energetic set, I noticed some parts between (and in the middle of) songs that took me back to my younger days. Not that twenty-seven years old is old, but when my back-in-the-day is the 80’s, then you’ll understand what I mean. Crowder brought back some memories during his little speech during the track, “Neverending”. The very mention of GI Joe, Rubics’ Cube and New Kids on the Block brought back memories of those days you could find me wearing the He-Man t-shirts with my over-sized colored tube socks. It was all good.

Oh and the sound effects are all here too. You know those little 8-bit Nintendo-like sounds found throughout Crowder’s releases. They’re here.

One of the show-stopping songs on the set in my opinion would have to be the band’s cover of the Hank Williams’ tune, “I Saw the Light”. Wow! David even goes as far as asking the crowd is they would like to join (where down home they call) a hoedown. I was dancing in my chair as I was listening. But, couldn’t find a banjo within reach to start picking at. “O Praise Him (All This for a King)” is probably the highlight of the CD in my opinion. I absolutely love this song and was glad to see that they included it on the live set list. The song is a constant reminder of God’s greatness and the praise and adoration that we owe Him for all He has done for us.

Remedy Club Live closes with the moving live version of “Surely We Can Change”.

Remedy Club Live also features a killer DVD to accompany the CD as well. Not only does it include the entire live concert, but there’s so much more. While most concert DVD’s have behind-the-scenes footage and stuff, which this one has as well, the Remedy Club Live DVD even has lyric and chord subtitles. One of the coolest features I noticed on the DVD is the demonstration of how to play the music, by the musicians themselves. This proved to be to me, one of the most beneficial extras on the DVD. If you wanted to learn how to play any of the songs on the record, it was shown to you, with even some close-ups of finger positions on the fret board.

I wish more artists would put out releases like this. A concert CD, a concert DVD, behind-the-scenes footage and even teaching materials for fans to learn the songs on the record. Simply amazing.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Although live concert CD/DVD’s are definitely cool, and fans often flock to buy the live offerings of their favorite artists, not all concert CD/DVD sets are worth going out and buying. In the case of David Crowder*Band’s Remedy Club Live, this is definitely not the case. Like I mentioned in my review, the CD is basically a greatest hits live, offering fans a glimpse into the musical world of David Crowder*Band, in this writers opinion, being one of the greatest praise & worship artists out there.

Sitting through and watching this concert was not only an entertaining experience, but also as if you are sitting in the pews during church service, lifting your voice to the Lord in worship. Remedy Club Live delivers on a level that not all live albums have achieved. Both entertaining and ministering, this album is sure to be among some of the best live albums ever released.

Casting Crowns [The Altar and the Door Live CD/DVD] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
I absolutely love Casting Crowns. I remember first hearing “Voice of Truth” on the radio waves back when I worked for a CHR affiliated radio station in Zephyrhills, FL in late 2004. That was all it took to get me hooked on one of the most successful Christian groups of the last five years. Having said that, I get excited when I hear that the group is releasing an album, whether it be a studio album, or in this case a live album.

August 19th, marks the release of Casting Crowns’ third live installment, this time covering the hits from their August 28, 2007 release, The Altar and the Door. In this third live release, fans can expect much of the same of the past releases. The biggest songs and performances from the selected album’s live national tour. I can say that I was part of this project in a way. Musically? No. Production? No. Then how was Jay Heilman of Christian Music Review involved with this Casting Crowns’ project? Well, I was a member of the audience at the show they recorded and used for this particular release! Yes, I am a part of Casting Crowns history. I tried spotting myself in the concert DVD that accompanies the CD, but no luck. There were just too many people there! Just kidding. J The concert contains the two biggest hits from Altar, including “East To West” and “Slow Fade”. Mark spends some time between each song encouraging the crowd in their personal walks with Christ. I guess it’s the youth pastor in him, but that’s what I really like about CC’s Mark Hall. He’s a straight forward, no non-sense and humble kind of guy.

The set-listing on this release was somewhat different then the others. While Live in Atlanta and Lifesong Live only contained songs from the corresponding albums, Altar Live included two other songs, one being “Praise You With The Dance” and the other, “Love Her Like Jesus”. You’ll especially like the little guitar-fiddle duel at the beginning of “Praise…” The wife definitely shows up the husband on this round! It was great to see this live too. It really got the crowd going, before Megan Garrett bursts into the vocals end of the track.

The group also performs my personal favorite from the album, “The Word Is Alive”. The message behind this song is definitely one that people need to hear. It teaches us to focus on God’s word and not denomination, version of the Bible or anything else that takes your focus off of Christ. The band is joined in “Somewhere In The Middle” by new artist and special guest, John Waller. While Waller only serves as background vocals on the track, but it is a time for people to catch a glimpse of what this extremely talented and ministry-first focused artist has to offer. We actually got the opportunity to hang out with John backstage just prior to performing with the band. He was humbled and honored that the band would ask him to come out and sing with them.

All in all, this live addition is a must have for Casting Crowns fans, but after three album-specific live releases, I wonder when the band will release a full-length concert DVD featuring hits from all of their albums. For those of you who are wondering what’s next for the band, you can check them out this fall when they release their first Christmas CD, Peace On Earth which is due out in stores on October 7, 2008.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Thus far I have enjoyed the Live releases from Casting Crowns and Altar Live is no different. As mentioned in the review, the only complaint I have is that I wish the band would do full-length concert CD/DVD that spans across all of their hits and more. Bottom line, the band delivers once again what is sure to become a fan favorite.

Third Day [Revelation] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
This marks my first review of a Third Day album in nearly three years. My former writer, Mike Strubie took on the task of writing reviews for Chronology 1 & 2, but I was excited to write another review for this group after a long wait. A lot has changed within the band in those short three years as well. 2008 marks some changes with the group, some good and some sad, but changes nonetheless.

In February 2008, the Third Day message boards reported that long-time guitarist; Brad Avery had left the band. Why? No one really knows for sure, other then to pursue other avenues. Many were shocked about this, as was I. I mean how could Third Day be Third Day without Brad Avery? They have and they will. I know the Lord has plans for this group. Never thought any of the original members would leave the group, but hey, changes are needed at times. The band even has a new management outfit. The only thing that hasn’t changed? The group’s heart for ministry and glorifying God with their music.

Revelation is the start of something new for this band whose music has uplifted and encouraged hundreds of thousands of fans for well over a decade. Producing this time around is Howard Benson. Benson is best known for his work with such mainstream bands as Hoobastank, Seether & Theory of a Deadman, just to name a few. He also produced such successful Christian artists’ projects as Flyleaf’s and Chris Daughtry’s debut albums as well. Mac Powell talks about the band working with Benson in the June 7, 2008 edition of Billboard magazine, which the band is also featured on the cover. Powell says “We really wanted to shake things up. We chose to work with Howard because of the past music he had done. We loved those records and the vision he had for those albums. At the time, they weren’t easy decisions—to go somewhere else and the record with somebody different—but in hindsight I’m so glad we did.” You can tell the difference after your first listen through to the new album. It rocks.

For those of you who are asking, “Is this going to be the same as Third Day’s post-Time projects?” No, it’s different and better. I love TD’s early stuff, but I could never understand why such criticism of their latter albums. I loved “Wire” and “Wherever You Are”; I just couldn’t understand the negative views. Sounds like Metallica of the mainstream with their changes made after the release of their 1991 album, know as the ‘Black’ album. These guys haven’t sold out. They are still in it for the right reasons.

Revelation gets revved up with “This Is Who I Am”. The track sounded similar musically to some of the rock tracks found on Wire. I found the message refreshing, and invigorating. Not being afraid of what God’s molded you into. I think as Christians we always strive for the Lord to ‘make us better then what we were before’. The song points this out as being something we should ask God of in our lives. We could always use some positive change, reinforced into what the Lord has made us into.

“Slow Down” reminded me of some of TD’s earlier stuff. The track also features BGVs provided by American Idol finalist (fifth season), Chris Daughtry. I really liked the harmony of Powell and Daughtry’s voice throughout the song. One sad thing I noticed was Brad’s signature guitar solos. They’re not bad, but I am going to miss his unique style. The chorus really seems to touch on the changes going on in the band, although I know that the song’s not about that in particular, but the chorus almost seems to use that as an example. “Oh, I don’t want to let go / Of all the things that I know / Are keeping me away from my life / Oh, I don’t want to slow down”. Strange, but made me think of it.

“Call My Name” once again proves that Third Day can bring forth uplifting and ministering singles that speak out blatantly about the love and mercy God shows us everyday. First there was “Cry Out To Jesus” from Wherever You Are and now “Call My Name”. I remember the first time I heard the single on the radio and I’m like, “Wow, this is the new Third Day huh?” The song grew on me quickly, and I find myself singing the chorus while I am walking around. The message is the same as some of the bands past songs, speaking from the Savior’s point-of-view like, “Love Song”, “Come On Back To Me” and “Cry Out To Jesus”. I really liked it and it seems to be doing well in radio with its ‘rely-solely-on-Jesus’ encouraging message. “You just call My name and I’ll be there”

“Run To You” is one of two songs on the album that features hard-rock band Flyleaf’s lead-singer, Lacey Mosley. I have to say that I was shocked to see that the band had Lacey guest vocal not only on one track, but two. I quickly fell in love with the song though. I think Lacey’s voice really adds something to the song that really compliments Mac Powell’s voice. I mean Ashley Cleveland was pretty decent on “Mountain of God” (from Wherever You Are), but it didn’t strike me in the same way as Lacey’s contributions on “Run To You”. The song’s message once again, to me, points out the dependence a believer should have with having a relationship with Jesus Christ as their personal Lord & Savior. The second verse really spoke to me personally. When I have been in that ‘prodigal’ state of mind, it’s then the Lord reminds me, “Jay, it’s time to turn back”. Amen? “Now I got a feeling / That I’ve got to leave and / Find a way back to where I came from / Though I don’t deserve it / I know it’s unheard but / Living here without you, my life is done
I confess that I shouldn’t have run from you / Now I know I was wrong”

I really enjoyed both the message and music of the album’s title track, “Revelation”. It certainly got me thinking about a lot of things. I think there are a lot of us that question God daily with the usual questions like, “What do you want me to do God?” I ask this all the time. “Lord, can’t you just tell me exactly what it is that You want me to be doing?” I think the chorus really touches on the reality of our situations in life as Christians. Give me a revelation / Show me what to do / ‘Cause I’ve been trying to find my way / I haven’t got a clue”. We just have to continue to allow the Lord to show us the way and to pray that His will be done in our lives. A revelation would be nice though! J

Yet another amazing guest contribution can be found on the next track, “The Other Side”. Robert Randolph. A name not that many people have heard, but I can guarantee you that that won’t be the case for long. I had the opportunity to see Robert Randolph & the Family Band open for one of my all-time favorite guitarists, Eric Clapton recently and I was very impressed with his talents on the guitar. Randolph’s guitar work is not what most would view as traditional either. He doesn’t play guitar standing up, but rather sitting down tearin it up on a steel guitar! Great track!

Skipping ahead to “Born Again”, another track which features Flyleaf’s Lacey Mosley. The track really allows the listener a chance to hear Mosley’s vocals in a different light. I thought it was much different then her work with her band, Flyleaf. The song got me thinking about the day that I gave my life to Christ. June 25, 2003. It’s like my entire world opened up, letting light in for the first time. I was a new creation, I was born again. I know I am not the only one who could relate to the message here. “It feels like I’m living / For the very first time”. As cheesy as this may sound to some, this describes exactly how I felt when I was born-again. I felt different, and for a very good reason.

I wasn’t expecting a country-sounding song on this album honestly, but you know what? Third Day is a southern-rock style band, so it’s only fitting that they throw a country/bluegrass laced track on here. “Give Love” is the track I mention. “Listen very closely as I sing this song / And please believe that I mean every word / When I say I love you / I mean it with all my heart / Let it be the best thing that you’ve ever heard”. Imagine Christ saying this to you. Well, He is. He’s speaking this love to your heart. Do you hear Him?

“Thank God for mercy / Thank God for His grace / Thank God for everything you’ve got / Before it’s too late”. Man, this is something that I say in my prayers everyday! “Caught Up In Yourself” talks about this very subject. I may not have everything that I have ever wanted in my life, but one thing that God has given me that is more valuable then anything in the world is His mercy, His grace and the salvation He gave me, made possible only through the sacrifice of His only Begotten Son, who gave His life on the cross for me. I could never thank God enough for what He’s done for me. I’m happy and content with not being a millionaire baseball player like I envisioned when I was a kid and I’m thankful for that too. I have so much more to offer the world that Christ has given me then being caught up in myself. I don’t need those kinds of headaches. Boy, the Lord knew what He was doing when He allowed my bad depth perception to keep me from being successful in baseball!

I could go on an on about Revelation, but I will close with this. I think Third Day fans out there will be impressed with what the band has to offer on the new record. Is it good? I think so. But I’ll let you be the judge of that.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Third Day will always hold a special place in my heart. Their music was the first in the Christian genre that I really got to listening to after getting saved. I was encouraged and strengthened in my faith by listening to their records. I am thankful that the Lord is working in groups like this. Revelation is sure to be a shining diamond that’s ministering glare will shine on for years to come. Third Day has done it once again. Bringing forth some good southern-fried rock with huge helpings of ministering messages. Mac, Mark, David and Tai … I commend you for a job well done!

Francesca Batttistelli [My Paper Heart] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
Sounds like: Natasha Bedingfield and Kelly Clarkson with a hint of a country twang in a few of the songs.

Francesca Battistelli, a new artist to the Christian scene, is about to release her first album, “My Paper Heart.” The title really fits the CD; her music shares much of who she is with her audience, connecting with listeners in an intimate way.

Since Francesca is a new artist, let’s take a moment to get to know her and where she comes from. According to a press release, Francesca’s musical talent started at a young age, and came naturally as both her parents were active in music and the arts. Her mother and father were both involved in Broadway. At 15, she joined an all-girl pop group, honing her musical and dance talent. She discovered her passion for Christian music when she was involved in her youth ministry at church, and quickly dedicated her gifts to God.

“My Paper Heart” starts out with a song called “Free to be me.” It’s about the twists and turns in life, and how God can see what’s coming and has plans for our future. “At twenty years of age I'm still looking for a dream / A war's already waged for my destiny / But You've already won the battle / And You've got great plans for me…” The second track, “I’m letting go,” is similar in its theme, about God being in control of our destinies, letting go and not being afraid. When we give up our lives for God, we will truly experience freedom.

The title track, “My Paper Heart,” has kind of a pop jazz sound, and starts out with a good illustration for how fragile our hearts are. “Well I’ve been treated like a valentine / That’s been ripped apart and left behind…/ My paper heart is Yours now / I have landed in Your hands / Come so far to find out / My life will never be the same / Since you wrote your name / On my paper heart.” Francesca is really speaking scripture in this song. Proverbs 3:3 says, “Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.” Our hearts are tables, blank pieces of paper for God to write on with His love.

“Forever Love” is a beautiful worship song that could be sung during any church worship service. It is about God knowing and loving us, and loving Him in return from the depths of our hearts. He is our forever love, unchanging and always forgiving. The next track, “Someday Soon,” will most certainly be played at my wedding. The entire song is a ballad written to the husband she is waiting for, and the great love and life she can not wait to share with him. “I wanna be the one who does everything with you / Watching stars, washing cars, taking walks, going to the store / I wanna be the one who gets to change her last name someday… And I can’t imagine anything, anything better than /
Someday falling in love with you / Holding your hand / Making our plans all come true…”

“It’s your life” is about making wise decisions, and doing what you know is right even though the world is watching. The song says that your life may be the one thing that moves another person closer or further from God. So don’t forget that “It’s your life / The world is watching you / Every day the choices you make / Say what you are and who / Your heart beats for…” We are called to be living witnesses for Christ, and this song is a reminder of that calling. The last song, “Time in Between,” is a picture of Christ’s life and death put to music. Jesus was there in the beginning of time, spend nine months in his mother’s womb, then three days dead in a tomb before rising again. However, out of all that, the part that makes the biggest difference in our lives is “The time in between / That brings me to my knees / Knowing you came for me… / Don't take much for this crazy world / To rob me of my peace… / So I stand here lifting empty hands / For you to fill me up again.”

In a press release, Battistelli said, “Ultimately, I want to be an encouragement as an artist and a fellow believer. The Lord has continually called me to do things that are outside my comfort zone, whether it was accompanying myself on guitar for the first time in front of seasoned players or packing up and moving to Nashville last year knowing hardly anybody. Still, He's never left me, and He constantly shows me that it's worth it. I have parents who pray and encourage me to be bold and to take bold steps for Christ. I don’t think that’s common enough in the Christian culture. We have these big dreams, but many aren’t willing to take the steps to go after them. Yet this is the moment. We’re not promised tomorrow. So today’s the day.”

Welcome to the Christian music scene, Francesca!

CLOSING THOUGHTS
You can catch Francesca’s blog on her website: http://www.francescamusic.com/. She updates it often, which further serves to connect her with her audience. Over-all, Francesca is a great new artist, and I’m expecting to see some creative work from her in the future.

Big Daddy Weave [What Life Would Be Like] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
Big Daddy Weave entered the studio for the fifth time in their decade long career with a singular mission – to create a collection of songs that might somehow communicate the word placed on their hearts to the hearts of those who hear it. It might have been easier to simply try to recreate the success of their previous hit songs, such as “Every Time I Breathe” or “Audience of One.” Instead, the band set out to craft the most ambitious and varied album of their career by doing what they’ve been doing all along – refusing to compromise while stretching the artistic boundaries of what a Big Daddy Weave record is supposed to sound like.

What Life Would Be Like is a call to me and to everyone else who is sick and tired of same-old-same-old, to learn how to let Jesus live through us.  It is that revelation, combined with the heightened amount of collaboration on the new songs, that makes What Life Would Be Like the climactic culmination of Big Daddy Weave’s first decade together.

As I started listening to this album and preparing to write this review I immediately connected with the title song “What Life Would Be Like”.  This song is amazing.  It REALLY made me think.  The song says “I wonder what the world would be like if we let Jesus live through you and me”.  I guess I never thought about it like that before.  Another part of the song says “the world waits, while His heart aches”.  How much longer will you continue to wait?  The bible says we are not promised tomorrow (or your next breath).  It is time to stand up and realize that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Light.

Another song that stood out to me is “We Want the World to Hear”.  This song says “There is none righteous.  There is none worthy.  There is none Holy but You the King.  I will live my life to sing of Your wonder.  To shout of Your glory so creation will hear God.  We want the world to hear”.  This is a great example of how we should live our daily lives.  There should never be a question of whether you’re a Christian or not.  People should be able to tell immediately.  Remember, we want the world to hear.

As mentioned in the opening paragraph this album has the same Big Daddy Weave sound.  I personally love the way they sound.  When the album is released you will notice a couple of things.  Track 4, “Revive Us Again” is an old hymn.  The arrangement these guys have done of this song is simply wonderful.  I usually don’t get into the old hymns, but found myself lost in this version.  It is a song that I have heard over and over again growing up in church.  But, this rendition grabbed me and really spoke to me.  I can’t stop singing it in my head and aloud.  Another song you will recognize on this album is track 6.  It is a song that is by someone you may have heard of, Phil Collins.  The song is Big Daddy Weave’s version of “Another Day in Paradise”.   When I first heard this, it totally caught me off guard.  It wasn’t exactly what I expected.  I will say that Big Daddy Weave has given Phil Collins a run for his money with this one.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
I was very impressed with this album.  It really made me think about things in a different way.  We try so hard to over complicate the things in life.  But with Jesus it just isn’t necessary.  The reason we were created is written in the bible and that is our sword we should take to battle each and every time we step out into the world.  Think about it, what would the world be like if we let Jesus live through you and me?  I took this and posted it to my MySpace page as my status.  I want people to think about that the way I have and pass it along like me.  There is a purpose for us being on the earth.  All you need to do is read God’s word and follow His will.

I would like to thank Big Daddy Weave and everyone that was involved with this album for doing the work of the Lord.  Big Daddy Weave, you are a phenomenal band and I look forward to hearing more from you in the future.  God Bless!

Randy Travis [Around The Bend] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
I have to be perfectly honest with you. Country music is not my favorite style of music, but it does fit into Gospel music just like any other style of music. This is Christian Music Review's first attempt to write a review outside our normal comfort zone of Christian pop, rock and praise & worship music. So hopefully you like it and it doesn't totally bore you!

Around The Bend marks Travis' sixth Christian album and first country album in eight years. It's not one that will disappoint the Randy Travis fan either. I think one thing that people will notice right off the bat is Travis' trademark voice. It's funny, even though I don't listen to country music on a regular basis, Randy's voice sounds the 'most country' to me. That's funny to some, but it's true. To hear Randy sing, to me his voice is synonymous with country music. I guess I should listen to some more huh?

I think the first song that stuck out to me was “You Didn't Have A Good Time”. One thing I do like about country music is that there's almost always an interesting story behind each song. I think this one is one about regret about things that have happened under the influence of alcohol. Don't think alcoholism can effect just non-believers either. There are Christians out there that have dealt with this ongoing sin. The moral of the song reminds us that we must turn away from those things, and give them to God.

I got laughing when I first listened to the track, ”Every Head Bowed”. It's funny, I don't really hear a whole lot of funny verses in the music that I listen to and review, but after getting through this one, it just reminded me that even though you don't want to act like this in the house of God, every child is tempted. I didn't have those opportunities, but I can pretty much tell you, that's probably how it would have been for me. The verse that had me rolling was the one which said, “Straight to the KFC, cause we're gonna beat the Catholics there / While they're still confessing, we're blessing our mashed potatoes” Some might take offense to that, but I thought it was pretty funny. Now I am going to be sitting in church some Sunday thinking about KFC and those awful but somewhat tasteful fake mashed potatoes. Maybe. Maybe not.

“Faith In You” was another song that I liked. The song is slow-paced musically, but it's message kind of gets you thinking about everything that we have today, everything in which the Lord has given us, that we take for granted. It's those times that when we think we can go at it alone that the Lord reminds us that placing that faith in Him is the only way to truly make it to the other side. One verse that really struck me and questioned me was the verse which said, “The more I search for my significance seems the more I disappear / And I wonder have I made a difference in someone's life since I've been here?” Wow, I was dumb-founded by the very question. Ask yourself that question too. Have we really put our full faith and trust in God and used the knowledge and wisdom He's bestowed in us to make a difference in someone else's life? It's a thought.

Marriage to me should be the most important relationship in someone's life on the other side of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as one's Lord and Savior. “From Your Knees” should serve as a reminder as to how sacred and important we should view marriage. The song talks about a husband who has cheated on his wife of seventeen years, and repercussions associated with the act. I don't know about those married couples reading this think on this subject (especially you husbands), but your marriage is always worth fighting for. You made an oath to each other before God when you joined in marriage, before you take that step into adultery, just think of what it will cost you and who it will effect. Especially if you have children, it's not only the two of you who it will effect. I know this is just a song, but it really got me thinking about my own marriage. I would do anything to keep myself from destroying it and my home. The key to any marriage is keeping the Lord the center of the relationship. Love and everything else will follow.

Another song that got me chuckling was “Everything That I Own (Has A Dent)”. If everything you owned was either scratched, broken or dented, then you have some serious problems. Just kidding! No, not necessarily. You could also be a very clumsy person. Anger can cause many problems in a relationship and the material possessions in your life aren't the only things that can be dented. Relationships can be too. Hearts can be broken, but one thing is for sure, and that's the Lord can mend those broken and 'dented' hearts and restore them. One scripture I like to remember, especially when my wife and I have had an argument over something reminds me to never go to sleep angry. Deal with the issue at hand. Trust me, it will save headaches later on! The scripture that I am referring to is Ephesians 4:26 which says, “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath”. The music accompanying this track makes it even better. My wife would probably laugh if she listened to it too.

Overall Around The Bend was a great album. It definitely broadened my horizons musically. I can honestly say that my musical tastes are pretty diverse and as of recent time I have kind of opened up to country a bit. After all the Southern Gospel my wife loves to listen to, I have grown quite fond of the country music.

I haven't had the opportunity to listen to Randy's other country albums, so I really have nothing to compare, but I did enjoy listening through to this one. If you're a country music fan or just want something a little different to listen to, then give this one a try. You never know, you might enjoy it!

CLOSING THOUGHTS
This is actually the very first country album that I have written a review for, so I apologize if I don't seem to be too educated in the genre. I really enjoyed this one, surprisingly. I tried to put it off on one of my other writers and the only response I got was, “Umm... I'm not sure. I will if you absolutely, positively want me”. Well, I got the hint Lord! I hope that this was good enough! I have actually gotten the opportunity to meet Randy in person and giving the fact that I had seen a few of his movies (and had not heard his music), I was actually quite surprised at how down to earth and humble he was.

The man comes across as one who takes his ministry seriously in wanting to uplift and glorify Jesus with his chosen style of music. Country music fan? Doesn't matter. I think Travis delivers on this album and who knows. Maybe I might listen to a little more country from now on. I like a good story. Especially one that has me laughing but at the same time, thinking about my own life story.

Superchic[k] [Rock What You Got] | Posted October-07-2008
[MAIN REVIEW]
The world will always put you down, but Superchick is back again to tell you that with God’s help, you can overcome the world.

This band has been featured in movies, commercials, television shows and magazines, and has headlined and co-headlined on more tours than I can count. They are continuously touching the lives of Christians and non-Christians alike with messages of encouragement and hope. There could never be too much Superchick in the world.

“Rock What You Got” is album number five for these innovated artists. Superchick once again jumps right in shouting out to the world that you are beautiful and strong. The album is filled with encouragement about getting up when you are down, becoming a leader, not following trends, being alive, and starting your own revolutions.

The title track, “Rock What You Got,” dedicates the music to “the beaten down / The ones who lost their rock and roll… / Welcome misfits, orphans, all / The ones who feel they don’t belong / you were made to rock, so stand tall / Go rock the world and prove them wrong.”

Something listeners might not realize right away is that many of the songs from Rock What You Got are based on examples from the Bible. ”Hey Hey” talks about standing up for what you believe in. “Some people you can never please… / But I won’t bow down, even if the whole world thinks I’m crazy… / Why kiss the feet of the people who kick you / When you can be anything that you want to?” Ancient Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar, anyone? No bowing down to anyone or anything but the one true God. Superchick member Max Hsu (keyboards, DJ) said in a press release that “Actual rebellion takes a lot more courage than appearing to be rebellious.”

“Alive” is the kind of song you’ll want to rock out with in your car. It is a get up and dance kind of sound that tells listeners that pain is what lets you know you are still alive. “Don’t give me drugs, no Novocaine / I must be alive ‘cause I still feel pain / We were born with wings / We were made to fly…” There are a few unexpected surprises along the way too… see if you can spot Dr. Frankenstein yelling, “It’s alive, it’s alive!”

I don’t want to give away every song, but “Rock What You Got” has a lot to offer its listeners. The music itself is very eclectic. Overall it’s pop rock with a few energy metal rifts early on, but songs such as “Breathe” and “Crawl (Carry Me Through)” slow things down with some reflective melodies.

“Stand in the Rain” closes out the album with some awesome instrumentals and inspiring lyrics. It is a scenario about a girl who is lost, feels alone, and is afraid to cry because one she starts, the tears will keep falling like rain. But when fears are engulfing you, the song says it is time to “Stand in the rain / Stand your ground / Stand up when it’s all crashing down / You stand through the pain / You won’t drown / And one day what’s lost can be found…” This is definitely an album to listen to when you are feeling down or alone and need a reminder that God will be there to hold your hand or carry you.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
I have never been disappointed with Superchick, and this album continues to rock my world. Superchick has produced another staple for the music library of every young guy and girl, but especially all the girls out there. My favorite thing about this band is that they are positive. There is nothing superficial about the message, music, or artists themselves. They are real people out to spread God’s message that He has great plans for everyone’s life. Superchick knows that life most certainly will be hard, but is a constant reminder that we live for One who has already “overcome the world.”
