Eleanor Denig is a 23-year-old Christian pop artist based in Nashville. She’s a songwriter with a deep passion for creating music for the Church. As an artist, her heart is to make music that serves as a bridge for those who feel “church-adjacent,” offering a pathway toward vulnerability, healing, and hope. When Eleanor moved to Nashville during the pandemic, music became a way for her to process what faith looked like amid uncertainty and the many temptations to become discouraged.
 
“Sound Mind” comes from her debut album, Already and Not Yet. The project is a powerful collection of songs that ministers to listeners wrestling with fear, anxiety, and self-doubt. Its layered, polished production beautifully complements Eleanor’s passionate vocals and heartfelt songwriting.
 
Eleanor’s music is honest, uplifting, and deeply vulnerable, celebrating the freedom and peace found in Christ. Her songs resonate emotionally while also pointing listeners toward truth and healing, making her a meaningful role model for young women navigating faith and identity. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Eleanor about her stirring song, “Sound Mind.”
  

Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
 
The chorus is the response of Scripture, which says, “You give me peace, and a sound mind.” I love putting Scripture directly into a song. God gives us His Word as a reminder of His truth. The spirit of God that lives in me doesn’t make me timid or afraid. What do I do in those moments? Pray these words.
 
It is encouraging to me to hear that this song has ministered to others. I started the songwriting process for this song by reflecting on the frustration I’ve felt with the dissonance between our human experience of emotion and our faith. I’ve been dwelling on the idea of how we invite Jesus into our actual moments of anxiety, not just the overarching theme of it, but during those times when we are experiencing anxiety.
 
I have had panic attacks, and the enemy likes to sneak in and come heavy-hitting with fear sometimes. The first verse describes the tangible feelings I experience when I’m overwhelmed, both mentally and physically.
 
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
 
2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
 
Ephesians 3:17-19 (NIV): “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
 
Romans 8:11 (VOICE): If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you.

Romans 12:2 (VOICE): "Do not allow this world to mold you in its own image. Instead, be transformed from the inside out by renewing your mind. As a result, you will be able to discern what God wills and whatever God finds good, pleasing, and complete."
 
1 John 4:18 (NKJV): "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love."
 
What is the takeaway message?
 
When I don’t feel grounded, I quote Scripture to myself. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He quoted Scripture. I used that same process in writing this song and in dealing with my own panic attacks and anxiety. You can see that as the song continues. It’s so beyond me that God gives us peace that passes understanding. We think we need to fix ourselves to get out of these emotions, but God tells us He will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
 
As overthinkers, we seek to understand, and the spirit within us brings peace. Faith comes from that place of not understanding. When I met Jesus, peace became a much more tangible reality in my life. I still have moments of anxiety, and being vulnerable about it helps me and all of us feel human and know that there’s nothing we can do in our strength, but in our weakness, His strength is made perfect.

Closing Thoughts
 
“Sound Mind” is about trusting in God and confessing to Him and to others when you fail or struggle. Lay your troubles at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from those burdens. This song testifies to surrendering to the Lord and serves as a prayer for personal struggles. There is no need to hide your weaknesses.
 
Jesus is the answer to all we want and need. We all need God to fix our beautiful messes. The beauty of it is that we are covered by Jesus’ grace, which means God offers forgiveness rather than condemnation. The beauty of grace is that it's freely given, not something we deserve or earn. The Holy Spirit gives us new life. We no longer have to live with guilt, fear, or worry. We're born again. Our old life is dead.
 
This song celebrates the freedom we are promised in God's Holy Word. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." This verse emphasizes that God provides stability, rational thinking, and emotional balance rather than fear. 
 
In fact, because of our weaknesses, God's grace and strength are perfectly revealed. We can't know everything, and we are not in control, but trusting Him gives us the assurance that we need not be afraid. God will be there to pick us up when we fall. When I listen to this song, my challenge is to recognize the part of my life I've been trying to control and instead release it, placing all my hope and trust in God.
 
God’s resurrection power, given by the Holy Spirit, the same power that defeated death and raised Jesus from the grave, is available to followers of Jesus. I love the translation of Romans 8:11 (Voice): "If the Spirit of the one who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you." We can all choose to ask the Holy Spirit to indwell us with His supernatural ability to overcome what the enemy wants us to think about ourselves.
 
Allow the Holy Spirit to “cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you” (Romans 8:11, Voice). If you are struggling with depression, please know these life-giving words with certainty: “Your promise is/Peace/And a sound mind/You bring me back/You fix my eyes/You give me a sound mind/You give me a sound mind.” Amen to that.
