From the oil fields of Texas to the national spotlight of American Idol, Michael Sarver has lived a journey marked by success, struggle, redemption, and renewed purpose. After building a country music career and later stepping away to focus on faith, family, and ministry, Sarver has emerged in Christian music with a deeper sense of calling and authenticity. His latest single, “More Like You,” challenges listeners to move beyond surface-level faith and truly reflect the heart of Christ in everyday life. In this conversation, Sarver opens up about humility, restoration, songwriting, and why his mission today is no longer about personal success—but about pointing people toward Jesus.
Your journey has taken you from the oil fields of Texas to American Idol, countrymusic, worship leading, and now Christian music. Looking back, how do you seeGod shaping each season of your story?
Looking back, I can absolutely see the hand of God shaping me through it all. One of the biggest ways is in humility. Back on Idol, we became so well-known so quickly that it went to my head and caused me to behave in ways outside of who I knew He made me to be. And when that happened, God found a way in His infinite wisdom to humble me as only a good, good Father would. He brought me to a place where it's no longer just about me. It’s about Jesus Christ and His message to the world. Now with me out of the way, I can be more effective for the Kingdom of God.
After finding success in country music, what ultimately led you to step away from that path and fully embrace Christian music and ministry?
I stepped away from the success in country music because I had lost my way and, quite honestly, I was on the brink of losing everything, including my beautiful family. I made the decision to change and turn towards them, and my savior was the man God made me to be. After some time away and some serious focus on what mattered, I was able to come back with a true heart for the lost, writing honest songs to impact the world for Jesus’s sake.
Your new single “More Like You” asks some deeply personal and convicting questions about faith and authenticity. What inspired the message behind this song?
“More Like You” delivers the same challenge to others that I’ve been challenged by as well—to be more like Jesus to the world. The lyrics reflect some of the ways the Lord has convicted me about how much better I can be for His sake.
In the song, you challenge the idea of “talking the talk” without truly living like Jesus. How has God personally been teaching you what it means to reflect Him more authentically?
That’s a good one. Honestly, God has been teaching me how to be more like Him by being more willing to witness to strangers outside the four walls of the Church. I am outgoing, though that hasn't always been my strong suit. But He has challenged me to see and meet people where they are, rather than always expecting them to come to me.
You co-wrote “More Like You” with lead singer Dave Frey from Christian contemporary band Sidewalk Prophets and several other collaborators. What was the songwriting process like, and what did each person bring to the song?
Yes, those guys are amazing. They started this song years ago, and when it was presented to me, I really resonated with it, so I asked for their blessing to rewrite a few sections and add a few things that meshed with what I wanted to say a little more precisely, and boom—we had a song. It was very gracious of them to allow me to do that.
Since stepping into Christian music, you’ve released songs like “Warrior,” “Victory Song,” “All I Need,” “Limitless,” and now “More Like You.” What themes or messages have been consistently on your heart during this chapter of your career?
The overall theme across all my songs is Jesus—and how good God is. I also want to speak boldly about tapping into everything that He has put inside of us to be strong and determined Christians, no matter what we face.
As someone who has experienced both mainstream success and ministry-focused music, how has your perspective on success, purpose, and calling changed over the years?
Simply put, it has shifted from about me to about Jesus and the world I am trying to reach for His sake. Success will be determined by people hearing His truth through our music, believing in Him and being saved, and then being encouraged to walk in their own calling and purpose, which, in turn, will keep the message of Jesus Christ shaping generations until He returns.
What's next for you musically and personally, and how can fans and readers be praying for you in this season of live and ministry?
I have new music coming soon and hopefully some new Christmas music later this year, too. I’m also looking forward to touring as soon as possible. I would ask for prayers that God keep me healthy so I can continue this mission, get out there, and start ministering His beautiful truth to the world in person.
