Big Daddy Weave formed in 1998 in Mobile, Alabama, and these past few years the band members Mike Weaver, Jeremy Redmon, Joe Shirk, and Brian Beihl have each learned what it means to truly live by faith and to trust in a God who makes all things new.
Every song by this band displays the band's heart behind what they do, leading people in worship. These new songs demonstrate once again the passion and energy that have made Big Daddy Weave one of Christian music's most compelling acts. True to form, their new singles reflect real life and emotion, from longing and struggle to breakthrough and gratitude, with front man Mike Weaver's forthright songwriting and intimate and unmistakable vocals backed by powerful arrangements and stellar musicianship. It derives its power from the fact that life and music intertwine so fully.
This band can really write a hooky and truth-filled chorus. This song is a reflective worship declaration sung with a stirring passion and filled with prayerful lyrics. I had the chance to speak with Mike Weaver about "I've Just Seen Too Much."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
The song "I've Just Seen Too Much" came from one of the darkest days of my life. When we wrote that song, that was maybe the most difficult song I've ever written... I was just grieving the loss of my little brother and I was in such a dark place. All I could see was the pain, all I could see was what could never be again. I just felt so hopeless until I started thinking back a little bit on all of the things I've seen God do over the years in my life and in the life and ministry of Big Daddy Weave. And then it sort of dawned on me in that moment that seeing all of those things, even though I was in this dark place, that could never undo all of the goodness I had seen of the Lord in my life. And it really just sort of gave me hope for the future. That's where this song came from.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV): "But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved."
Philippians 1:21 (NIV): "For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain."
1 Peter 1:3 (NKJV): "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."
Psalm 146:2 (NKJV): "While I live I will praise the Lord; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being."
Psalm 119:114 (NKJV): "You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word."
Romans 15:13 (NIV): "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV): "Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you."
Psalm 55:22 (NIV): "Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken."
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV): "For we walk by faith, not by sight."
What is the takeaway message?
I don't feel like I have to be in a place of denial when I go through a hard time, but I love that I can look back on God's faithfulness in my life. I realize I've just seen so much of how good He is that it could never undo all of that on a bad day. I've just seen too much of His goodness. Even when everything feels like it's unraveling, we can trust that God hasn't left us--because we've seen too much of His faithfulness to believe otherwise. Even when prayers go unanswered or outcomes don't make sense, God hasn't stopped moving. He's still weaving redemption into every thread of pain. When talking about letting healing begin, a comfort in the journey is our memories of seeing the Lord's work at other times in life.
Lyrics
Been walking through the fire
Wrestling down my share of doubts
Some days it feels like I've been
Losing more than I have found
I won't tell you that I've got it all together
If you know me, then you know my faith has wavered
If you ask me how I know, I know He's real
I could believe that He's still with me
In spite of how it feels
If you ask me why I trust Him
When it feels like everything has come undone
All I can tell you is I've just seen too much
Even now I couldn't tell you I'm okay with everything
Yet I begged for something different
There's still so much I would have changed
But even in the midst of all the hurting
I've seen enough to know that He's still working
If you ask me how I know, I know He's real
I could believe that He's still with me
In spite of how it feels
If you ask me why I trust Him
When it feels like everything has come undone
Ooh, all I can tell you is I've just seen too much
Of His kindness
Too much of His goodness
Too much of His mercy
That always follows me, I've seen
Too much of His patience
Too much of His faithfulness
I can't believe He's any less than all He's been to me
So if you ask me how I know, I know He's real
I could believe that He's still with me
In spite of how it feels
If you ask me why I trust Him
When it feels like everything has come undone
Ooh, if you ask me how I know, I know He's real
I could believe that He's still with me
In spite of how it feels
If you ask me why I trust Him
When it feels like everything has come undone
All I can tell you is I've just seen too much
Oh, I've just seen too much
Closing Thoughts
"I've Just Seen Too Much" serves as a gentle reminder to hold tight to what you know to be true about God, even in trying times. The potent lyric pays tribute to God's faithfulness. It's a prayer-song. If someone asks why you trust Him when it feels like everything has come undone, this song is a way to proclaim your faith: "All I can tell you is I've just seen too much... of His kindness, of His goodness, of His mercy that always follows me."
This song is a faith statement. Righteousness was accredited to the prophet Abraham for his faith. We need to have the faith that the Bible describes in Hebrews 11:1 (NIV): "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
We can face our daily battles with more courage and strength because we know that whatever the outcome, based on His promise in Romans 8:28: "God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
This song is about submitting all your worries, anxieties, and stress to God and letting Him guide you. He wants to walk beside you, and He wants us to be bold and unafraid.
We walk by faith every day. The beauty of walking by faith and not by sight is that we can learn to trust God more with our lives. God tells us in the Bible that we can do anything in Christ with faith. I love singing this song back to Jesus and telling Him plainly that I need no other than Him.
Jesus commands us to trust God's Word completely, no matter the circumstances. God's Word assures us to trust what God says about us, no matter how we feel about ourselves. If you've put all your hope and trust in Jesus, nothing can separate you from His love. God sees us as He sees His Son. He makes something out of nothing in each of us.
"I've Just Seen Too Much" is a stirring song. Pray along, "If you ask me why I trust Him when it feels like everything has come undone, all I can tell you is I've just seen too much...of His kindness, of His goodness, of His mercy that always follows me." Amen to that.
