Rising contemporary Christian artist Katy Nichole is a musician to watch. Her debut single, "In Jesus Name (God of Possible)," derived from a simple chorus she released on TikTok, has topped Billboard radio and iTunes music charts. The song was created from the words in 24-year-old Katy's prayer journal written during a global health crisis and in response to her own story of suffering, hope, and healing.
Sharing her unwavering belief in God's ability to heal and the power of prayer, Katy's debut single connected with audiences around the world who are looking for healing and restoration in a weary and anxious world. The chorus was inspired by one of Katy's multiple journal entries which led to the release of her debut album, Jesus Changed My Life, which also includes the hit songs, "Jesus Changed My Life," "Hold On," and "God is In This Story." The album showcases Katy's gifts as a songwriter, and her shimmering, emotion-laden voice. This album is filled with positive grace-filled messages of hope. Her songs address the pressures of life, and she understands that her identity only comes from her relationship with God. I had the chance to speak with Katy about her lead single from her upcoming sophomore album, "When I Fall."
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
"When I Fall" was a song I wrote out of complete desperation. I just wept at my piano, and I cried out feeling so mentally, spiritually, and physically drained. The words I sang were what I was praying in that moment. So tired of trying to just be okay, I decided to be honest with myself and with God, and God met me exactly where I was. I felt so much peace bringing all that I am to the feet of Jesus. Whether it be joy or sadness or just my frustration, I knew I could talk to Jesus about anything, and he would love me through it.
Which Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Matthew 19:26 (NIV): Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
Romans 8:11 (VOICE): If the Spirit of the One who resurrected Jesus from the dead lives inside of you, then you can be sure that He who raised Him will cast the light of life into your mortal bodies through the life-giving power of the Spirit residing in you.
John 10:10 (ESV): "The thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."
John 16:33 (NIV): "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Philippians 4:7 (NKJV): "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Romans 8:28 (VOICE): "We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan."
Ephesians 3:20-21 (NKJV): "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen."
What is the takeaway message?
Psalm 27:7-8 reminds me to be persistent and unwavering in my prayer. Because the Lord is listening and in His presence is where I will find everything I need. This song started as a journal entry, similar to "In Jesus' Name." That led to writing and recording the song. I was just honest. I laid everything at the foot of the cross. And that's when I found peace and so much hope. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, God will catch me when I fall. I know firsthand what it means to be broken and desperate. However, I have also experienced the beauty and wonder of God redeeming and breathing life into situations that seemed utterly hopeless. I want my music to speak truth and shine a light for those going through dark times.
Lyrics
Lord, I can't find you right now
And everything is crashing down
I'm losing faith and falling into my doubts
How long will I have to fight
Just for me to stay alive
I know you're there God please just meet me here tonight
My God I'm tired of trying to be okay
I've prayed all the prayers I have to pray
Please don't leave me lonely
My God I need you to hold me
My God I'm losing all the hope I got
I'm far beyond the point of being lost
I've tried but I can't let go
'Cause God you catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
There's hardly air in my lungs
With all the damage that's been done
Lord please sustain me now, I know you are enough
My God I'm tired of trying to be okay
I've prayed all the prayers I have to pray
Please don't leave me lonely
My God I need you to hold me
My God I'm losing all the hope I got
I'm far beyond the point of being lost
I've tried but I can't let go
Cause God you catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
Lord please help me now
My soul is crying out
My God I'm tired of trying to be okay
I've prayed all the prayers I have to pray
Please don't leave me lonely
My God I need you to hold me
My God I'm losing all the hope I got
I'm far beyond the point of being lost
I've tried but I can't let go
Cause God you catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
You catch me when I fall
Closing Thoughts
Take in and sing this song's sincere and emotive lyrics of submission. Sing it as loud as you can. Let it be your anthem. But don't just sing the words, sing everything in complete submission to Him.
This song challenges us to step out in faith and trust God--even when we want to give up or can't see where we're going. Remember, we aren't the power source to overcome life's challenges. There is a higher power in God that provides true strength and energy. In our weakness, God's strength is perfect.
This song represents our victory over our battles--even before we know the earthly outcome. So, trust that God is going before us and wins. If we think about the type of faith we're called to have as believers, it's described as the faith of a mustard seed.
When I read the Bible, I'm strengthened with the truth that fear, worry, and anxiety are not God's plans for my life. So, trust God's Word. Jesus commands us to trust God's Word completely, no matter the circumstances. Our thoughts are constantly under attack by the enemy. This song is a daily prayer asking God to come and change our hearts and lives so that our behavior and how we live flow from God living inside us as believers.
That's what this song is all about. We are aware of many situations involving people taking their own lives after dealing with depression. I've personally struggled with depression, worry, and anxiety.
We're called as Christians to believe in the freedom that we have on the cross of Jesus. We're free from our fears, addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism. Jesus came to die for us so that we can all truly live in Him.
This song gives me hope and reminds me to not give up. I listen to it daily to remind me of how God feels about me. Katy's hope is to pass on the life-giving message of Jesus Christ. As Katy so powerfully urges in this song, "How long will I have to fight/Just for me to stay alive/I know You're there God please just meet me here tonight."
Allow The Holy Spirit to "cast the light of life into your mortal bodies." If you are struggling with depression, please know with certainty these life-giving words: "My God I'm losing all the hope I got/I'm far beyond the point of being lost /I've tried but I can't let go/'Cause God You catch me when I fall."
Know that being His is enough. This song has become my personal anthem, and I sing along at the top of my lungs to the sincere and emotive lyrics of submission. I'm deeply moved by the lyrics, "My God I'm tired of trying to be okay/I've prayed all the prayers I have to pray/Please don't leave me lonely/My God I need You to hold me/My God I'm losing all the hope I got/I'm far beyond the point of being lost/I've tried but I can't let go/'Cause God You catch me when I fall." Amen to that.
