Earlier this year, singer-songwriter Brandon Heath dropped a new full-length album, Enough Already, featuring his Billboard radio chart-topping hit, “See Me Through It.” Whether as an artist to set the mood for reflection and worship or for personal times of devotion, I rank Brandon highly for fans of truth-telling singer-songwriters. His vulnerability and ability to connect emotionally in his songs bring me closer to God,
Brandon offers a musical style reminiscent of Christian contemporary artists John Waller, John Tibbs, and Josh Wilson. He has strong vocals, personal lyrics, and a testimony of grace that can be heard in his music. I had the chance to speak with Brandon about “Enough Already.”
Please tell me the personal story behind this song.
I have a lot of insecurities, including my ever-present struggle with feeling like I never quite measure up. It’s a real weakness for me, but I also realize there are a lot of people out there who can relate to that. So, I decided to allow the insecurity to have more space in my life and to let it affect my songwriting. This has been a season of me rediscovering what I mean to God. It has given me peace and a sense of belonging.
This song title holds a lighthearted double meaning. I don’t need anything or anyone else to tell me what I’m worth. God has already defined my worth. He already calls me son. He already recognizes me as redeemed. There’s nothing in this world that could give me more meaning and purpose than what God already gives me.
This song deals with my battles of feeling unworthy of love. My father wasn’t around much when I was a child. His absence created wounds that made it difficult for me to trust others. I would ask myself, “Do they like me for me, in all my faults? Do they find me to be genuinely funny or are they just laughing to appease me?” It takes a lot of energy if you think about that. It kind of robs you of joy. You can’t settle into friendships. That would be more of my struggle, wondering ‘Am I good enough on my own?’
What Bible verses connect to the message of the song?
Romans 8:28(VOICE): “We are confident that God is able to orchestrate everything to work toward something good and beautiful when we love Him and accept His invitation to live according to His plan.”
Psalm 139:14(NIV): "I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
Psalm 139:17-18(NKJV): "How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You."
Ephesians 2:10(NLT): "For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago."
2 Timothy 1:7(NKJV): "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Psalm 23:4(VOICE): "Even in the unending shadows of death's darkness, I am not overcome by fear. Because You are with me in those dark moments, near with Your protection and guidance, I am comforted."
Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV): "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Philippians 1:6(NKJV): “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”
2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV): But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
Philippians 4:6-7(NIV): "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
What is the takeaway message?
Things are crazy. But it’s not the time to lose our heads and throw up our hands and dig ourselves into a hole. It’s time to love our neighbor. That’s what God has called us to do—to love and see our neighbors, because I know they’re scared like I am. So, I’m trying to be more in tune with the people around me and just find ways to say, ‘Hey, we’re loved. We’re not alone.’
I found a new view of how God sees me with my song, “Give Me Your Eyes.” When I wrote the song, it was, ‘God, how do You see the world? Show me how You see people.’ Now, ‘Give Me Your Eyes’ has a new meaning for me, ‘God, how do You see me as Your son?’
I’ve heard it said before that music is medicine, but I don’t see myself as a pharmacist. I can’t sit down and prescribe for anybody, but I can share some of my pain and my perspective, and that connection, I think, is what makes people feel the healing.
If I can help someone discover their identity in Christ through one of my songs, I would count that a success. I feel like in the season of history that we find ourselves in, we need to be rooted in this truth: He is whom He says He is, and we are whom He says we are.
Lyrics
I'm kind of a thief Me and my stolen identities I've been comparing myself to somebody else And it's getting the better of me
I'm kind of a liar It's really unbelievable How the things that I say to myself find a way To the deepest part of my soul
It's none of my business What anybody thinks of me God is my witness That's all that should matter to me
'Cause I'm loved already I'm enough already Totally Yours, all in Your hands Couldn't be more than I already am I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough already I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough already
It's kind of amazing And a lot to take in I'm accepted, not rejected In despite of my sin
But as hard as I fell No, the world doesn't help me forget it, I regret it But the past is only the past Not where I should be living, like I'm not forgiven
'Cause I'm loved already I'm enough already Totally yours, all in your hands Couldn't be more than I already am I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough already I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough, I'm enough already
Nobody's harder on me than myself And I'm about as beat up as I've ever felt So, help me see, how You see me With Your loving eyes Saying, "Son, just take it easy" (whoa)
'Cause I'm loved already I'm enough already Totally Yours, all in Your hands Couldn't be more than I already am
We need God to fix our messes and turn them into life-changing messages. So many people can relate to the message of “Enough Already.” This song is a daily prayer asking God to come and change our hearts and lives so that our behavior and the way we live flow from God living inside us. What a powerful expression of what it means to accept that God never leaves or forsakes us. He is all we need.
I'm convicted by the song’s strong lyrics, but I also find immense comfort in it. The Bible says to trust in what God says about us—no matter how we feel about ourselves. In many areas in our lives, especially as we’ve faced this coronavirus pandemic, we spend a lot of time worrying, as well as living in fear and anxiety. We need to let that go and allow the Lord to be our redeemer.
King David was a shepherd. When writing Psalm 23, he knew that the Lord was his only guide and hope, the good shepherd of his soul. This is what God wants us to do: submit our worries, anxieties, and stresses to Him. Letting Him be our guide. He wants to walk beside us. He wants us to be bold and unafraid. When I read the Bible, I’m strengthened with the truth that fear, worry, and anxiety are not God's plans for my life. So, trust God's Word. Jesus commands us to trust God's Word completely—no matter the circumstances.
Lay your doubts and struggles at the feet of Jesus, and He'll take them from you and release you from those burdens. God wants to hear from you. Believe in the freedom that you have on the cross of Jesus. You’re free from your addictions, insecurities, and perfectionism.
Brandon writes and sings his breath, given to him by God, into anointed new songs to encourage us. You'll be blessed by this tender and reflective ballad with a convicting declaration: “Nobody's harder on me than myself/And I'm about as beat up as I've ever felt/So help me see, how You see me/With Your loving eyes/Saying, "Son, just take it easy"/'Cause I'm loved already/I'm enough already.” Amen to that.
